For me that bright light is putting character to the pose. Like a blast or a shade of light in the background. If you know what I mean.
Something like a backlight to accentuate the contours? I see what you mean, but what the portrait mode produced here looks fairly artificial in my opinion.

Thats even better than your last one, the gull gives the scale too.

I hope you used a zoom, I certainly wouldn't want to get that close to one of those.

Thanks very much guys. Yes, the shot was taken was 500mm - hence the tight framing.

It would have been nice to get in closer but apparently that isn't a safe thing to be doing but I would've tried if I could've...I guess that's why the Mrs says I have a "reckless abandon" approach to photography.

But at least you have more than justified the investment in that 500mm prime.
