Not as dramatic as some of the examples in your link, but I took an iPhone pic of the setup for two images I shared last month. For the first image I placed a black cloth on the ground to cover up the blue tarp and firewood to make the background black without distracting elements. For the second I used a wider angle lens and shot closer to the ground (and the subject) to take the tarp/firewood out of the composition (hiding them behind the subject).

The lighting setup and exposure was the same for both--main light coming from the flash through the umbrella with the lens stopped down to f/16 to both increase the plane of sharpness around the subject (i.e. depth of field) and to diminish the effects of the ambient light on the background.
