I had hopes that you didn't drink it all before you grabbed your cameras:)

That particular shelf was finished a long time ago.

I was down at a nearby dock getting a feel for smoothing water with an ND filter early this morning when this guy landed. I had to swap lenses real quick, move the tripod and change some settings to try and get the shot. This is the only one I got before it flew off.

This was my first time to this dock and it'll be a great location for me to practice tracking birds with the camera.

Edit: So I think I've narrowed this down to being a Great Blue Heron. If I'm right, it looks like the only time I'm going to be able capture this bird again is at dawn or dusk. I'm shooting with a 550D and a craptackular tripod(a nice one is my next purchase) and my long lens is a 70-300mm f/4-5.6 II. Any tips on capturing this bird again? Just a ton patience?

Over there------->
Many thanks to everyone who commented on or 'liked' my last photo. The feedback was just what I needed after coming home from an unsuccessful photo outing. I spent about 90 minutes in the freezing cold having a staring contest with a bank of clouds that refused to get out of the way of the sun. There I was looking at a scene that happens maybe once per year...really magnficent background...absolutely perfect light there...just needed the clouds to let some light through to the foreground and middleground. But nooooooooo...the clouds refused to cooperate and instead teased me mercilessly. I kept seeing this immensely bright edge to them, indicating the sun was right there, nearly revealed, so close that I couldn't even look directly at the clouds. Yet the clouds never let the sun shine anywhere but the background; they were moving, but along with the sun, following it alllllll the way down. Grrrrrr....:mad:

OK, that rant made me feel a bit better. ;)

Fascinating bird. I look forward to seeing your future experiments with water and with capturing more of these birds.

:(

I feel like that... every day... except not when the clouds are being stubborn... when I refuse to get out of bed when the sun's rising above the ocean dispersing great light onto the clouds... :D My lack of beach shots recently comes from lack of nice afternoon light.

What you mention is the type of thing that teases me in my dreams... find nice location... light never comes.
Light finally comes... forgotten memory card.
Get home to computer.... images corrupted.
:( :p

Here's an oldie from the archives...

Storm Front moving in

So I was at work this evening on the 5th floor and passing by this window facing north. The sun is setting towards the lefthand side of the picture and I see the town and the hills to the north bathed in the setting sunlight and this dark bank of ugly clouds moving eastward. "Darn!" (actually I must admit it was a little stronger than that), I said. "I wish I had my camera with me." Then it hit me-Duh, use your iPhone idiot. So I snapped off this one:
