More Welsh water

Last one from this series. Perhaps a bit overdone on the milky-water. Comments always appreciated.

This is a photo I took of a sunrise in Okinawa, Japan probably around 1998-99. It was with a 35mm Canon camera and that's all I really remember about the gear.

I was in the US Marines at the time and we were up early for PT (physical training) as was the usual custom. It was still very early and dark outside when we began PT. Once we finished, we went back to the barracks for a shower and then breakfast before going to work.

I was in my room when my best friend, John, came to my door imploring me to grab my camera and go outside and shoot the sunrise. It was truly breathtaking to see and I quickly set up on a small tripod at the edge of the Pacific Ocean and began to snap shots.

I have a small series of amazing shots on file, but this one is the best of them all. A couple of years ago I had it blown up and put into a wonderful picture frame where it now resides on my wall.

A re-edit of a flower image I took a couple of months back.

It's glorious! I'm so pleased that you had it printed. So many folks don't print their images and only view them on a screen. Once you start printing and seeing your images really come to life, it's addictive! Thanks for sharing it with us.

The milkiness of the water does not seem that overdone, but I kind of wish the composition was shifted just a tad to the left. I was doing some waterfall shooting last weekend, and it can certainly be tricky to get the angle you want when you're already standing in the stream hoping not to slip and drop your gear in the water ;)

One of my better attempts:

Great Falls, Hamilton by FriskyFreeze, on Flickr
Shot with the X100s - I love this camera's built in ND filter, comes in very handy for things like this.

I managed to hit 3 waterfalls in the same day (started late, was aiming for 5), but it seems they were on the drier side, got to try again after more substantial rains, though I'm afraid the coloured leaves would be gone by then.

Very nice. If you were in the UK, a shortage of Rain would not be an issue!

Great shot and I'd certainly agree with your comment on composition - funny looking at the thumbnail makes your point really clearly. Certainly no shortage of water over here.....thanks again for your comments.

Here's a different shot with a more left-leaning. Comments always appreciated.

More balanced, but I think you can do better. I'm torn at how I feel about this kind of foliage - it looks much better in person than in pictures. I am still undecided about how to best treat the photo I posted earlier. The original intent of the outing was to photograph fall colours, but I've been getting more positive responses to the b/w version of that shot, where I purposefully darkened the green channel to calm down the busy foliage.

Another variation I tried was to insert blue sky into the patch of white in the coloured version. Turned out pretty well, but I'm not sure I'm entirely happy with the idea of pasting in a sky that was originally photographed ~5000 km away. I just didn't have any recent local blue sky shots!

Not too happy with it myself. Know what you are going through with lack of local blue sky...Your B&W version works well imho.

I really like it. That's the kind of exposure I'm going to go for when I give it a go. How long was your exposure?

I got this effect at between 0.5 and 1s exposure at f/14 iso50 (24mm end of Canon 24-105mm). Water was flowing pretty rapidly and in a relatively light patch of ambient. Hope this helps.

I think the time of day has big say in your end result. If it was taken at golden hour time, you would get more life out of the green areas with the better shadow and less flat light. But that's hindsight.
