Mom and three spring (first year) cubs.

We had two days for non-stop rain which proved to be great weather to photograph the bears while they were digging for razor clams at low tide.

Peter, just love the gray and brown colors in this! Not to mention the composition!! One of my many favorites of yours, but this is in the top 5 for sure.

Approaching the limit for my little X20. A larger sensor and a wider f stop would have blurred out the background, resulting in a better photo of the singer. I guess there are apps available that could create the effect; I'm just using iPhoto.

At ISO 2500 there is a bit of noise, which actually works to the advantage of the singer, who has quite a bit of acne scaring. It only took a little retouching to clear up the worst. It was not easy for photography, with changing lighting and a revolving disco light sending spots out everywhere; again a bit of retouching helped with that.

That is a beautiful image. Such a rich blue and the glass like water is just incredible. Wow! Lovely.

Maybe a B&W conversion would add to it? To take away the uneven colour cast? I am really sad sorry but I can't look at the picture without the knot in the speaker cable distracting me. OCD kicking in...

Another jaw dropper. No puns, no frivolity this time, just pure awe at the capture. Very nice. Fantastic colours, fantastic moment capturing the difference between the mum's concentration and the cubs' hanging out. Great detail. I assume these are telephoto images but how close were you? I ask because it must have had the adrenalin pumping. Amazing to see that. Such amazing creatures.

Couldn't agree more. Shots that some of us dream about. The Exif says 500mm on a D5. So he wasn't really far away. Or it is a crop. Anyway, a great shot.

Another attempt at the street genre. Comments always appreciated.

Street Music

I like the scene. And B/W always seems to work with streetphotography. The person with the headphones on the right is distracting. It took me some time to discover that is was a real person and not a urban outfitter ad on a billboard. So perhaps if you had moved more to the right, it would have been easier for my brain.

Cheers Oblomow, much appreciated. Believe it or not, I was rather pleased to capture the headphone-guy looking towards the drummer and the drumstick pointing to the woman on the right: a sort of line of interest. Thought the headphones added a bit to the musical theme. I see what you mean about distraction though.

Thank you all for the kind comments. They're very much appreciated.

Ken, most of my shots from the trip were taken with the 500mm. I'm guessing they were about 15 to 18 metres (50 to 60 ft) away in that shot. They were close enough that in most of the shots I've only cropped a bit to help with composition and to straighten the horizon.

I also shot a bit with a 70-200mm and got some nice shots of bears in the beautiful Alaskan environment. The only regret I have from the trip is that I didn't do more of the environmental type shots.

Funny, when asked about distance, I'm not entirely sure. When photographing these guys I was so absorbed with what I was seeing that I really didn't think about how close they really were…kind of a sensory overload situation. It was a good thing there was a guide to keep an eye on us and the bears.

I have some full-on head shots of the bears taken with the 500 when they were not too far outside minimum focus distance. Then I couldn't help but notice how close they were. At those times I would glance over my shoulder at the guide to make sure he wasn't sleeping on the job. He would just look at me and say very calmly and quietly: "Don't worry, I've got your back". It wasn't till the end of the trip that I found out he wasn't even carrying bear spray as I assumed he would be.

Stunning images. I am not sure I would be brave enough to be that close and not be shaking so much that I over power the image stabiliser!

Just the stuff of dreams!

Thanks for the background. I'm just looking at a lamppost 15 meters away and that looks pretty close!
Great shots and great back story. Looking forward to some more.

Is this an act of arson or is something else going on here?

This was the Temple at this year's Burning Man festival. On Saturday the Man burns and on Sunday the Temple burns.

The Temple is something special. All week long people leave remembrances, memorials and shrines on and around the temple. It is a very solemn place and quite moving.

When the Man burns it is cacophony of lights, sounds, and people. The Temple is the polar opposite. Tens of thousands of people sit in silence for the entire burn.

It is quite an experience.
