Thanks for the background. I'm just looking at a lamppost 15 meters away and that looks pretty close!
Great shots and great back story. Looking forward to some more.

Is this an act of arson or is something else going on here?

Ha ha ha you'd love it if I did throw in the towel and come over to the Nikon camp...

This was the Temple at this year's Burning Man festival. On Saturday the Man burns and on Sunday the Temple burns.

The Temple is something special. All week long people leave remembrances, memorials and shrines on and around the temple. It is a very solemn place and quite moving.

When the Man burns it is cacophony of lights, sounds, and people. The Temple is the polar opposite. Tens of thousands of people sit in silence for the entire burn.

It is quite an experience.
Certainly sounds it. Nice image btw.

You would! That improved IQ, greater dynamic range, better glass. You'd love it!
You might even win the odd competition! :D

Nice. Beautiful shades of grey. Any tips/tricks?
Tripod in the river, ND filter on the lens? B/W conversion?
Low angle and B&W really make this a winner.

Cheers guys, much appreciated. The colour version was very meh...hence the B&W conversion.

20-second exposure with tripod on a flat rock in the relatively shallow river. 18mm (all frame) 10-stop ND filter (a relatively cheap but imho pretty good screw filter that I don't mind dropping if accidents happen). During the exposure I put a bit of card across the top of the shot for a bit to give a grad effect to bring the sky down (yes I have some decent grad filters but for travel I do have to travel light). B&W conversion from RAW in C1P and just played with the channel sliders to get the look that I thought worked. Tried a combination of ND and polariser to cut reflections on the water but the angle did little to help.

Hope this helps.

Using the Session 5 as an in car dashcam. Australia is just too damn hot though as it shutdown on its own about an hour in.

Actually, after some searching, it might just be the card I was using that is too slow. Time to upgrade it.

Coastal Brown Bears, Lake Clark Alaska

D5X_6792-2-XL.jpg

This past summer I spent an extraordinary week photographing the Coastal Brown Bears of Lake Clark Alaska.

The Coastal Brown Bears of Alaska are a sub species of brown bear. They are similar to the Grizzly Bears of mainland North America but larger. Female Coastal Brown Bears average 227 kilograms (500 lb) and males 408 kilograms (900 lb) in weight.

It was exhilarating to photograph these beautiful animals in their completely wild and natural habitat with nothing but an unarmed but knowledgeable guide for protection.

Great picture, it reminds me of the look on my face when I'm outside with my kid and my wife finds something I messed up and is now calling me back inside. Love the contrast and the opposing line detail of the bear and the tall grass.
