Edward Longshanks, so called because he was taller than average was known as the Hammer of the Scots (can you guess how he got the nickname?) and he was a great reformer, because of him common law began to be reformed and made into statute thus giving certainty of interpretation of law to the population, he also established the permanent parliament - that really is one hell of an achievement!
Without his vision we may still be ruled by feudal barons. You think he wasn't a nice man but better him than the barons, they really did abuse their power. Ever heard of 'Droit du seigneur' “right of the lord” which wasn't abolished in Scotland until the 1700's
He reigned for 35 years and to be fair, in those days, you didn't reign for 35 days if you were a nice man!
His reputation is moot but he kept the Welsh and the Scots in their place, he deserves some credit for that? Not necessarily agreement but credit. He was also responsible for some of the greatest castles in the UK.

On a another note, Akash, there are literally hundreds of castles and medieval buildings all over the UK, do you research though before going to any of them, some of them are just shells/walls such as Goodrich and Dudley but others truly are magnificent, the likes of Arundel, Warwick, Bamburgh, Dover are all well worth a visit.

I love castles.

Arundel Castle (below) still has parts of the original castle built around the time of the Norman conquest and King William himself may well have rode through those castle gates, sadly that part of the castle is closed to visitors as the castle itself is still a private residence.

Thanks for the heads up. I’m only planning to visit the most famous and the beautiful ones. Hopefully 2 weeks will be enough.

You'll have to squeeze a lot in if it's just two weeks. You could start on the south coast(Dover Castle), head up through Oxford (beautiful city but no castle) into The Midlands ((Warwick Castle)(Wolverhampton is a great place - i'm sure every one will agree with that?)) and then across to Wales (loads of castles) before heading up North (Bamburgh Castle, inter alia) and across the great divide, through no mans land (Edinburgh Castle) up to The Highlands (beautiful countryside and loads of castles)
Just don't forget to take enough memory cards and post the pictures on here.

Did I stumble into the PRSI thread by mistake?

I even Googled it but i still dont know what PRSI is/means? Surely it cant be pay related social insurance - can it? If so, eh?

Those fierce inhabitants of the North brought many changes to the nascent British Isles... for instance, they forced the Emperor Hadrian to build a marvellous Wall just to keep them away from more civilised regions :)

I go outside occasionally. View attachment 726171

I absolutely love the game of basketball and still get out there and play once or twice a week despite my advancing age (and aching body). But once I saw the court in this photo, that very wet court, I realized that these guys were not playing basketball at all as they would seriously hurt themselves if they were.

Bingo, that’s the one I haven’t been to.

You don't know what you're missing, imagine a cold, miserable and not too beautiful city (ex-town) but with a a particularly wonderful, golden hue most Saturday afternoons.

Don't bother. They'll steal your camera.
I live 10 miles from there. I never go.

To be fair, i don't blame you but it is getting better.

You're be OK if you only have a Nikon though...

No, they'll nick anything! Even a Nikon!

Still, we have to call somewhere home.

I don't know what they were doing, I just walked onto the court and took their photo.
