This is a granddaughter and the pic is from 2019. When raising our kids, the only time we took them TOT on a day other than Halloween was if it fell on a Sunday.
Cool pic brings back memories except we also got horrid Halloween molasses (sort of molasses but not really) bon bons - and candy corn is the work of the devil.

Have a couple problems with that plan. One, they are planted in the ground, so moving them would be rather difficult! Two, they aren’t mine so I’d be stealing! :D

The person that does care for them puts tomato cages around them, stuffs them with leaves, then covers them in a big tarp. A lot of work for home grown figs!
Problem solved! Around by me , there's a lot of old school Italian's from the other side, all of which seem to have a fig tree in the ground . In the winter , you can tell where they live by the wrapped up trees . I had one given to me by a co worker some time back . Kept it in a big pot and rolled it into the garage when it got cold .

Yes it was Mayr Janes and horrible and Brachs was the most "popular". Reeses were the best. I have pics to contribute but for next month (tomorrow) I think.

Purple finch not in a Halloween costume 🙃
Yesterday afternoon I stood at my deck railing with a handful of peanuts and suet (what I had been working with a moment before), my hand outstretched and standing very still. I've never done that before. Stood there for what felt like about ten minutes but was probably five, lol. The closest bird to approach was a House Finch, oriented just like the one you have here, staring right at me. Perched about a yard away. There were some goldfinches and chickadees that also got within several feet without spooking...but this House Finch almost made it pay off! Going to keep trying, I think. At least until it gets really cold.

About chickadees: did you know this? I didn't
Next time you hear this characteristic chickadee-dee-dee call, simply count the number of “dees”.
As the number of dees increases, the likelihood of alarm, and severity of alarm also goes up.
Typically anything less than 4 or 5 dees is most likely not an alarm. But then as the dees become more than 4 or 5, it becomes more likely that you are indeed hearing an alarm.
I imagine the chickadees you saw weren't alarmed at all!

That is fascinating, and I will definitely be listening for that! Chickadees are kind of the advance scouts of the bird world. They are usually the first to find a new food source, and other birds follow. They also eat most things I put out there; other species have been pickier at my feeders. :)

I apologize everyone. Last night I posted a picture I took with my 13 pro max from some months ago. Again I apologize. Sorry for breaking the rules.

your photo doesn't have to be current. 🙂 We were just confused by the mismatch of your description and the exif. you can post a photo from any time as long as you took it and you only post one per day.

No, you haven’t broken any rules. We often post photos from our archives; in fact I am taking so few pictures at the moment that’s what I have been doing myself recently.

The fact that you took the photo yourself makes it not a rule breaker.

Please don’t worry about it, and I’m sorry about being pernickety with the camera details.

Cheers :)

Hugh
