Great shot.

Thanks :)

I converted a D300 to IR several years ago. Played with it for a bit, but other things came up and it ended up on the shelf. Recently pulled it out again and decided I wanted to put in the time to learn to shoot IR.

Went out today to play around with it. Will be posting some of the images over the next few days. Keeping these all in color at the moment, though eventually may convert them to B&W.

Here's the first:

Great shot. i haven't posted before, but want to ask how you convert a D300 to use IR? I used to shoot some IR B&W many moons ago on film, but thought that media was unavailable in digital cameras. thanks, Danny.
Thanks :)

There are several services that will convert a digital camera to IR. I used LifePixel. All digital sensors are sensitive to IR as well as visible light. Commercial digital cameras add an IR filter to block out IR light. LifePixel converts your sensor to be sensitive to IR light again. They have several different strengths relating to how much visible light will still pass through. Compared to film IR, it is considerably easier since you don't need to use an IR filter that blocks out visible light. So you can still compose through-the-lens. Exposure is also easier for the same reason--the camera's exposure meter works normally after a conversion. And you can hand-hold shots without the requirement of a tripod. Focus is a bitch however. If you send in a lens with your camera, they will calibrate auto-focus for you. It is "good enough" most of the time, but still isn't perfect.

Also, many lenses weren't designed to shoot IR. So while they may be stellar when shooting visible light, they can suck when using an IR converted body. The Nikon 18-200 VR DX lens works pretty well. Many of my "pro" Nikon lenses don't work well at all. Again, not what they were designed for.

The images also require more love in post. I'm reasonably happy with the look I get straight out of the camera with more dramatic changes to contrast, highlights, and shadows in Lightroom than I would normally do. They convert well to B&W but may require a bit more effort than a "standard" color photo. You can also get some very good results with Photoshop but you have to work at it (and I'm not a master of Photoshop by any stretch). The LifePixel website has tutorials/advice on shooting and manipulation in post to help.

Hope this helps.

About 18 months back , I did a quick trip to Monument Valley . Just a few hours to drive around the tourist road , and then back to where I was staying . At the time I thought It would be neat to spend a full day , and get one of the Navajos to take me into the other parts of the Valley , maybe at sunrise or sunset .So I got a cabin in the park for 2 nights this time . The place is called THE VIEW , and they're right . This is from my porch the first night I was there . Maybe around 7 P.M.

Just returned from several days mini-vacation with my wife from Glacier National Park. Here's a shot from our first day there. This mountain goat has a tagged collar on. The park rangers there have tagged some of the herd to monitor their activity and learn more about how they exist in this harsh wilderness.

Monument Valley is on my photography bucket list. I'm a lithe jealous. Maybe next year I'll make it there. Have fun and share more photos when you get the chance.

I'm not really a big photographer, but I've wanted to learn and taking photos is something enjoyable to me.

I took this with a Canon Rebel T3. Technically took it 2 days ago, but I'll make it my photo of the day.

I'm not sure if it's the camera, compression from upload, or my editing that makes the photo have so much noise, but other than the noise I really do like how the photo came out.

I really liked pictures that use this effect, so I wanted to take one like it :)

Let me know what you guys think!

Another from the other week. Had to wait ages for this one to be people free. I should really have bracketed my shots, but instead managed a what I was after with a bit of LR editing.

Let me know your thoughts.

I really like the angle on this one. More so than the previous shot of the MG. Last one looked like a shot of a nice car. This one, same car different angle feels like a Sunday ride out. Evokes lots of memories. Lovely.

If you want to reduce noise, increase the lighting and refuse your ISO.

Stunning. That is one of those places where you see a picture and you know without a doubt where in the world it was taken... Beautiful.

Thanks ... It's one of those places where it's pretty hard to get a bad image , although I succeeded a few times
