Btw, I didn't use selective colouring Alex but it does appear that way. It's an effect caused by my speedlight firing straight across and parallel to the surface of the milk (which was actually 5% "light coffee cream" for added opacity and viscosity). It highlighted the drop itself more than the surface of the milk.

Excellent results! Are you using a snoot to focus the light tightly, or is the speedlite pretty close and maybe at the long/tight end of its range at 90-100mm or so? Whatever you are doing, it's working for you.

Another stonker! very very nice! but maybe just maybe if you had waited a few minutes longer, it looks like the sun was about to give you a sunstar there no? still beautiful though.

----------

Yeah ... we thought there'd be a sunstar , I was positioned to catch the it , it looked clear in the predawn , but there was a low-lying cloud bank that spoiled the party , all I got was what you see. Did get some interesting other stuff , though . Started out at 5:30 and got back in around 9:30 and was moving around from location to location the whole time , spending ample time at each .

"all you got"?! you got an amazing image sir! It is stunning. I wish i could take quality images like that. I would die happy if I could get stunning images like that. Absolutely beautiful.

Taken with the iPhone 6, basic B&W conversion and square crop in iPhoto. Not too shabby.

Beautiful sharp image. You get better images using your phone camera albeit a good one, than I get using my built specific camera and lens! How do you get your images so pin sharp? Is there a knack or technique you use to get these so sharp? To all of you guys in here, How do you get such sharp images? No matter what lens I throw at a picture I get a mediocre level of sharpness. :-(

The quality of the lens is one determining factor of sharpness. The only way to control that is with your wallet which, understandably, is easier said than done.
Barring that, keep your ISO relatively low to avoid noise, and a general rule of thumb for shutter speed is to not let it drop below 1/(focal length x 1.5) . The 1.5 is if you have a crop sensor. So if you have a 50mm lens, then anything below 1/80th will tend to start blurring. With practice you can of course improve this, and even use it to your advantage, but as a general rule it works well.

What he said ^. Also a tripod and shutter release/timer can help.

Thanks, keno. I don't know that I would categorise this one as particularly sharp, it's more prickly to me! :p

This is with the cameras inbuilt sharpening applied, as it is a jpeg image. With my raw files, they all require sharpening to be added in post-production. What type of sharpening and how much could be a whole thread in and of itself!

I'll second, or is that third, what was mentioned above about shutter speeds, tripods and shutter releases. Mirror lockup is a good thing too, only when shooting on a tripod though. Try it handheld and you will soon understand why it's a pain that way...

Thanks guys...

So the only bit I am doing wrong by the sound if it is letting me use the camera... :)

So guess my issue is lack of practice and remembering to consider all the points for each shot. Less rushing in other words and get my knees dirty I.e. get actively involved in the shot rather than just snapping away.

Cool thx for tips guys...

I'll pretty much agree with Alexander , Apple Fanboy , and kingalexthe1st .
On this trip , all my shots that were taken either with low light or on questionable footing were done with a tripod/release . Generally I try to keep the ISO as low as possible , usually 100 or 200 . f-stops at around f8 to f11 ,shooting in Aperture priority . If I'm shooting hand held , I go for a shutter speed of at least 2X the focal length I'm shooting with , plus use whatever image stabilization my lens has . Lower light shots I'll bracket either 1 or 2 stops and pick the best of the three to play with in post. I'll also take lots of shots . If I think there's a view I can make work , I'll shoot it . 350-400 on the day I took the shot below . Doesn't cost me anything and I can always hit the delete button . Sounds confusing , but all this nonsense works for me. It's mostly a matter of taking lots of pictures to get to know what your gear will do , and shooting RAW. Here's another one .....

Guys Really really appreciate the tips. Guess I really do need to practice and stop worrying about one picture one shot. Never really considered the best of the bunch selection approach! Seems obvious when you say it!

I suppose I dont use my tripod enough either. Too much hand holding.

Thanks and again, awesome images! This forum is really turning my competency around.

Three of us went hill walking at the weekend. I used my tripod 70% of the time. My other mate 50%, and the other guy carried his around all day and didn't use it!
Also if your lend has VR you might get better results turning it off when using a tripod. And as already said mirror up remote release is the way to go.

Lol..

yes tripod seems to be the lesson here. I have two - MePhoto DayTrip and a more sturdy Manfrotto with a decent ball head... sitting here looking at my snowboarding helmet hanging on the ball head.... doh!

Mirror up dont apply, I sold up my DSLR and went mirrorless so I dont have that excuse... I would list the lenses I have but you guys would just roll your eyes... so nuff said, some have image stabilisation some dont just need to get used to tripod... ta...

You rock Melizard! ;-) ooph poor joke...

Seriously though really nuce images. Do you do selective adjustments in your images? The rock looks completely different to surrounds. Kind of like selective colour effect but not. Nice way to make it stand out.

More please.... encore!

Thank you! I didn't do much in post, I'm not ambitious enough to do selective colors. I think the blue color is from it being in the shadow. Here is a before/after:

My photo for today is... another rock. The blue water is silica-rich runoff from a geothermal power plant. Everything else is moss-covered lava. I seem to do a lot of landscape photos in portrait. It seems easier to compose.

Great background information. Thanks. I'm always looking for a wet weather project. Im going to set something up in the garage this year.

Is the white circle thing a desk lamp?

It is a desk lamp. The lamp really didn't add much light to the shot but was used so that I could clearly see the surface of the cream and watch for the occasional air bubbles that would spoil the shot.

Excellent results! Are you using a snoot to focus the light tightly, or is the speedlite pretty close and maybe at the long/tight end of its range at 90-100mm or so? Whatever you are doing, it's working for you.

Thanks Alex. No, I didn't use a snoot but that's a great idea...I'll have to try that next time. The speedlight was very close at about 20cm.

Wow Peter, just....wow.

Peter, magnificent pictures. Sorry I am late with the accolades. I got a chance to go back a few pages and look at all of the great submissions that I missed wile out of wifi use while in Glacier NP. I'm just getting caught up.

Thanks very much guys. :) Hope you enjoyed Glacier NP Florian...it's on my must see list.
