Whilst we were out on our Humpback whale watching cruise we were extremely lucky to witness a very rare event take place with one of the Humpbacks performing some Tail Sailing! Southern Right whales do it frequently, but for Humpbacks it is very rarely seen! The whale basically goes into a nosedive position, but floats there with their tail jutting out of the water for ages. Scientists still don't understand why whales do it, they are surmising that it may be a method of cooling the body, possibly a fun activity with the wind catching the tail and propelling them along although there was zero wind on the day we went out, or that it may be a precursor to sexual activity. This is a male here doing it, he was one of a pod of four males and one female.

This one did this for about 30 seconds, hence the lack of disturbance to the water immediately beside the tail!

I went to shoot the sunrise but I ran into some clouds. I tried to get creative with a ND10 to make the most of it.

Lovely colours to this and a nice composition too. Is this a blend of a couple of exposures? Reason I ask is that there's some not quite correctly blended artefacts to the image visible around the pontoon, mainly in amongst the birds and also on the left and right of the pontoon.

After some time of following some threads in this category I decided to buy my first camera.
So here's one of my first pictures I've shot.

One of the first you've shot?! No way! Brilliant picture. Keep us posted with some more photos in the future! :)

Oof! Those mushrooms look much better in food than in the wild, I can tell you that! Great shot.

He's drooling. :)
What a magnificent creature. Absolutely beautiful.

Some dude in a cafe in San Francisco. Took this one about a year and a half ago. I've been going through the archive and revisiting old photos that I forgot I had even taken. It's been a ton of fun finding little gems and processing them, all this time later.

Porcini mushroom if I'm not mistaken - just don't eat it on my say-so!

I'm so jealous, I have to travel about 1,000Km to get to an interesting bridge like that!

Really nicely done!
Nice. The Queensferry crossing over the Firth of Forth?

Really nicely done![/QUOTE]

Nothing as exotic as the Queensferry crossing I'm afraid although looks to be the same sort of design. This one crosses the river Mersey between Runcorn and Widnes in NW England. OK I didn't have to travel 1000Km to get there but therein lies the price to be paid...:)

Something less gothic. Comments always appreciated.

I like this. One suggestion I'd offer is to use a shoot through umbrella with your flash mounted on a stand. The shadows from the flash are pretty harsh in this pic and the umbrella makes them nice and soft. It makes it a bit more of a production to shoot (though still fairly portable), but the results are pretty dramatic. They are inexpensive and offer a huge bang for the buck. They work well for portraits too.

2 really horrible images that may serve as examples (I was going to shoot some flowers outside but it started to rain, so moved into the nearby shed):

Off camera flash without an umbrella (notice all the harsh shadows)

Off camera flash shot through an umbrella (notice how all the shadows are much softer)

Also possible you liked the harsh shadows, in which case never mind ;)
