Whilst we were out on our Humpback whale watching cruise we were extremely lucky to witness a very rare event take place with one of the Humpbacks performing some
Tail Sailing! Southern Right whales do it frequently, but for Humpbacks it is very rarely seen! The whale basically goes into a nosedive position, but floats there with their tail jutting out of the water for ages. Scientists still don't understand why whales do it, they are surmising that it may be a method of cooling the body, possibly a fun activity with the wind catching the tail and propelling them along although there was zero wind on the day we went out, or that it may be a precursor to sexual activity. This is a male here doing it, he was one of a pod of four males and one female.
This one did this for about 30 seconds, hence the lack of disturbance to the water immediately beside the tail!

I went to shoot the sunrise but I ran into some clouds. I tried to get creative with a ND10 to make the most of it.

Lovely colours to this and a nice composition too. Is this a blend of a couple of exposures? Reason I ask is that there's some not quite correctly blended artefacts to the image visible around the pontoon, mainly in amongst the birds and also on the left and right of the pontoon.
