Eastern mud snake. Driving home I saw this guy going across the road. Stopped and made sure that nobody ran over him. Started to head up a neighbor's driveway and he had his garage door open so I thought I'd let him know. Little did I know he was deathly afraid of snakes, this guy is non poisonous. Well, between the two of us we coaxed him into a bag which I tied off and took him home. Showed him to the wife, she loves this stuff. Then decided that he'd be better off at a local pond. Released him and all was well. Really pretty snake and big too. Nature in all her glory just can't be topped.

I have a love of vast and seemingly featureless places. The quiet can be amazing. The light can be brutally intense or soft (or both, depending on which direction you look). High desert, which the San Luis Valley is, mostly doesn't have the dramatic clouds needed for classic landscapes, so you have to work with what's there.
