Part of a series for the next few days - Falcon 9 launch yesterday. This iPhone photo documents the worst possible setup with a morning launch direct into the sun. Taken about 20 minutes before liftoff. Far prefer afternoon or evening launches. Distance "as the crow flies" is about 5 miles. Location is directly across the Intercoastal Waterway where it borders highway US1.

We've still got a few Black-eyed Susans hanging on but gradually they're dying off and petals drop away, leaving just the "black eye" part. I shot one of the survivors today and a little flying friend came along to check things out.....

Small birds that move fast are a challenge. Anyone ever get a good swallow BIF picture?

We used to have swallows around here but this spring and summer I haven't seen any -- don't miss 'em, really! They were a pain, dive-bombing people and animals walking along the boardwalk. I made a couple of attempts to catch them in flight but missed each time!

Yes, the image of the Black-Eyed-Susan and Friend was indeed shot with the new 100mm STF f/2.8 lens. I"m going to LOVE this lens -- such smooth, creamy bokeh!

See here. I was truly impressed with the results. Shot with an E-M1ii and adapted Canon lens. I have them around me and I don’t know how anyone keeps up with them. A crosshair sight helps, I suppose.

I was surprised any of the 10 shots I took was in focus. Faster than an F1 car, but the size of a can of Coke.
Yeah, not only are they fast, but they turn on a dime! I’ve tried, and at best I get some half sharp shots. BIF folks are a passionate breed, and no doubt they have some hefty shutter counts on their gear.

Yesterday's photo of the setup indicated that shooting into the sun for morning (8:46AM) launch is not the best idea. In that photo, one can actually see the ground crud that dominates this photo and the transition to blue sky as shown with future photos in this series. Afternoon and evening launches are far more picturesque - but I don't set the schedule. This was manually focused in setup, but its lack of focus gives a good example of refraction effect with the heat and distance (5 miles).

As a point of reference the Vehicle Assembly Building to the right is the tallest single floor building in the world at 526 ft (160m) with the doors 456 ft tall, taking 45 minutes to open or close. On hot humid days, clouds can form inside the building.
