A small pile of logs had been left to nature..... This one seemed rather photogenic. I have no idea what those little orange thingies are but they caught my eye!

Yesterday while hiking the 2.2 mile "Birding Trail" at the Wetlands Park, I was looking out at the water and didn't notice the 4 sandhill cranes along the road ahead. Maintenance workers in their vehicle caused them to fly at me with their low, slow takeoff. Instinct was not to duck...but put the camera to my face. They were so close, they were inside the minimum focus of me lens - just immediately shoot and thankfully shutter set continuous-hi. Since this is a single photo of the day, this is one of a 4 shot burst before it was all over, with the last one wings in the frame. For reference, Sandhill Cranes are large birds standing 4' to 5' (1.5m ??) and weighing 10-12 lbs.

The guys in the vehicle stopped as they passed as they witnessed everything. We had a good chuckle as none of us could believe what just happened.

More from the Wild Animal Sanctuary. A cat showing its belly is a happy cat. Many of these animals were kept in small cages in their pre-rescue lives, if not heavily abused. What the images I'll be showing over the next few days don't show is the context of enclosure size. They're massive. They have plenty of clean water, things to climb on, things to bat around and play with, trees here and there and other areas (like this one) to rest under.
