All taken on a tripod, ProRaw stock camera and unedited (because I’m terrible at editing)

Thank you. Yes, regular raw is really the way to unleash the full power of iPhone cameras. I really don't like how most stock cameras process images and unfortunately ProRAW has almost the same processing as the HEIC/JPEG files from the stock camera which cannot be overridden even when using a third party app as the ProRAW processing is taken care by the Apple Camera API.

Regular RAW is completely unprocessed which gives the photographer full control of the end results. And it does show what a beautiful hardware this phone truly has.
What is your take on the stock Camera app ProRAW in comparison to your preferred app and format? How much difference is there in terms of over-processing in your experience?

I was a fan of Tyler Stalman’s comparison between a typical HEIC and ProRAW shots, especially his highlighting of the newly enabled JPEG-XL Lossy option to help reduce file sizes.

I prefer the simplicity of the stock Camera app and am curious on how much I’m missing by using it versus a third-party option.

It is a huge difference between regular RAW and ProRAW.

ProRAW is heavily post processed by the Apple backend and cannot be considered as a real RAW format by any means. It is like a hybrid between JPEG/HEIC and regular RAW.

My biggest issues with ProRAW:
  • Denoise. Apple applies heavy denoising even in good light conditions that makes the photos look like paintings when inspecting them at 100% magnification. This is really unacceptable for me as the details can never be saved when denoising has been applied. This is the main issue with ProRAW.
  • Colors. Comparing ProRAW to regular RAW reveals that ProRAW captures less color information. Very visible on trees/leafs/foliage where different tones cannot be distinguished as they can in regular RAW. ProRAW just looks more dull and flat in comparison.
  • Sharpening. ProRAW is sharpened in post processing which further enhances the "painted" look and denoising artifacts.
Because the ProRAW processing is a part of Apple Camera API, most of these issues are visible also when using third party apps. It is a real shame that Apple does not allow sharpening, denoise, ISO, shutter speed to be manually set in the camera API. The processing is pretty much forced.

The only way to get rid of the processing is to use regular RAW and then manually process the images. Doing that, the iPhone is my #1 smartphone for photography and I tried them all. If Apple would remove the possibility to capture unprocessed RAW I would not be able to use it as a camera phone. That is the sad truth.

Which app you use? A link would be really helpful.

But how do you use regular RAW in 48MP?

12MP regular RAW has pretty much the same amount of detail as 48MP ProRAW. No huge difference.

On 14 Pro Max, ProRAW 48 was truly superior in detail but since then Apple has destroyed the performance of ProRAW 48.

Can this app lock the ISO?
And is it enough to buy the app or do you need the subscription/one time buy?
And has it a night mode like Apple stock camera has one?
What I mean is, can you shoot long exposure with it? At day and night?

That's a huge disappointment, so my decision to switch from the 15 Pro back to the 14 Pro was the right one. But I had hoped that this would change again with the 16 Pro. Then I'll have to wait a few years until something changes.

You can lock ISO in regular raw.

It has night mode called LowLight+. Never used it though.

For long exposures I use the Even Longer app.
