I found the ultra-wide lens a good one for candids at the market. I just walked around casually letting the camera dangle in my hand below hip level....snap/gotcha! With a little practice, I was getting some nice 'keepers'.

"freebooter, I love the colours in that last photo of yours ("between")."
Thanks, VictorM, I like the colour on that one, too. I used Lightroom to convert the NEF file. I generally find the D40 JPEGs too warm for outdoors pictures. Maybe I could do some in camera pre-adjustments...
BTW, how is that R1C1 flash rig working out?

I just got the flash kit, and have only taken it out one day, so I'm definately still learning how to use it. It's letting me get handheld macros with much more DOF at lower ISO for less noise (for example, that bee I posted was taken at f20 and ISO 200), and lets me introduce shadows to add a sense of depth (e.g. by varying the flash ratios). Only thing I'm not crazy about is that it runs on CR123A (x3) batteries which will run me into the poorhouse unless I can find a cheap source (probably have to buy a whole bunch online).

So far I like it, and it's a lot of fun to use... though, people are looking at me with much curiosity when I'm carrying the setup around, like I'm all hard core.

I was actually very angry when i took this shot, because it looked dark on the back of the camera, and when I got to the Hotel, my laptop (due to it's crapocity) is running Ubuntu, which made things worse. I was about to delete it until I got home and looked at it.

I decided I liked it, did a little sharpening and saturation boost in RAW and poof WahLah (or however you say it)

Nevermind. Sometimes I just seem to post some BS :). English is not my native language so bear with me

its okay! I guess you meant to ask what is causing the light trails?
It was dozens of parade floats, covered in animated lights. Pretty awesome.

I know there is so much wrong with this photo, but I can't help liking it... You see these all over London so was nice to see one in Hong Kong
