I guess this is as good a place to ask as any:

Could anyone recommend me a decent, cheap entry level bike? I'm thinking road or hybrid and am looking to not spend over $350. I'm sure someone will tell me to just go to the local bike store, but if anyone could recommend a brand or company or anything, that'd be helpful.

At $350 you are probably looking at a hybrid if you want a new bike. New road bikes are likely to be upwards of $500 (by way of reference, when I resumed riding 10 years ago, my first bike was a 2 season old new-old-stock ^good but not great^ Bianchi that was on sale for $1100). A better option might be to look for a used bike. Your local bike shop may have used bikes they're selling on consignment, and they can refer you to the local cycling clubs. You can also check Ebay to see what's selling for what.

In terms of brands that have entry level offerings, GT, Giant, Schwinn, Bianchi, Specialized, Trek, and Cannondale would be among those worth checking out. Go hit the Bicycling magazine website to see what they're reviewing too.

Bikes Direct has some cheap, entry level bikes that are in that price range.

They come in a box and you have to assemble them as far as I know. Or your LBS could do it for you

Here's the Lager currently, and my Langster beater, which is filthy. The protector is covering a dent in the toptube. No cracks yet.

Well, I went to my local bike shop, but the cheapest Hybrid they had was $400, so that's a no-go. I have heard about BikesDirect.com, and am considering the Motobecane Elite:

http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/motobecane_elite.htm

I'm also considering this:

http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/gravity/grav_dutch.htm

One thing I was wondering about though: what would the best height to order be? I'm about 6'1". In-seam probably about 34-35".

The only other option I've much thought about would be a bike from Target, but my understanding is that their Schwinns aren't much good. Am I correct in assuming ordering from BikesDirect would at least be better than getting a Target bike?

Try some other bike shops. It's end-of-season right now, so they'll be clearing out overstocked '09s. I wouldn't recommend buying BikesDirect until you know what you're getting into. If you get a bike at an LBS, you'll get free service, free advice, and establish a relationship with them that pays off more than saving a hundred bucks or so with BD will.

Besides, if it's your first bike in a while, you're going to want ride before you buy. Fit and feel are more important than affordability. You'd be better off trying a used bike off someone who knows what they're doing, and saving money, than buying BikesDirect.

Here's my bike I just bought everything and some chains and peddles for 38 bucks.

I'm excited to get working on it in the morning.

That is a nice collection, the Planet X Ti bike has long been an item of lust for me. Looks so nice.

What tool bag is that?

I'm waiting delivery of my bike so will post pictures of it when it arrives.

I'd like it to be a frame from Lynskey/Planet X but it was bought before they were doing them. It's a custom built frame imported from http://www.xacd.com.cn/product.asp?rootcl=1&cls=1 which cost lest than 1/2 the planet x frame. The welds may not be quite as good but it's still a lovely ride.

The bag is a specialised mini wedgie. It's just big enough for 2 tubes, lever, small multi-tool and gas
