I think, and this is just me, but I think he was just looking for some actual #'s showing the improvement that ditching the Run-Flats would give. I don't think anyone doubts that the car would certainly handle better with tires designed for that reason. But, just how much improvement is the question. Run-Flats aren't ideal for performance, no. But, they have improved greatly in the few years they've been around. It would be interesting to see just exactly what kind of improvement that small change would gain.

And, just to put a final word in clearing things up, I really do like the 135i as a car. A car like that, with that engine, is just great. I just don't like the way BMW is pricing it, or a few of its cars, these days. That is all. Good car, just not priced how I would like to see it.

But, I do love a nice 2-door Bimmer. My 2 previous BMWs that I mentioned earlier were an E30 M3 and an E36 328i coupe. I loved both of them. And, I do still like BMW as a brand. I just disagree with how they've positioned themselves in a few product classes.

Seeing his other posts, he is defensive with the 370z for no good reason as no one is bashing it. The way I read it, he wants proof that the 135i will improve without runflats when it is common knowledge( like how RWD is better then FWD when it comes to performance).

Though each has their benefits. For all out performance, yes RWD is better, though you lose some of some cost/packaging/weight benefits that FWD has. Just as Run-Flats might not perform as well as a flat-out sticky performance tire, they do generally last longer, have some built-in safety, and some weight savings (no spare needed). Its all a give and take.

I would actually be really interested in seeing a test with various cars, and how much performance they can improve just with tires. Everything from like a Civic on up to your top-level performance machines like 911 Turbo. Even cars that ship with "high performance" tires won't generally have the ABSOLUTE best tires. It would be interesting to see just how much better a car can get with the best tires available.

I don't mind people speaking their opinions on the 135i. :) I already stated that the Z is a more focused sports car and you definitely can't beat it for it's price. It's a great car. People just need to realize that the 135i and Z are pretty much on par as far as performance is concerned (stock). Magazines give the Z the nod because it's a better bargain. The only thing that magazines forget to mention (or even realize) is that the 135i comes with run flat tires and they perform much worse than their standard counterparts. If they fitted the 1er with non RFs, the car would pull a faster 0-60, stop faster, and do even better on the track and skid pad.

Performance aside, I chose the 1er over the Z also because of the luxury features and just the little design details that are overlooked by most car companies:

- Google Search: You can search google and push addresses to the GPS and phone numbers to your cell phone via BT. You can also jump on google maps on your home computer and send waypoints and destinations to your car.

- The new 09 iDrive/Navi blows nissan's navi away. Gorgeous anti-aliased maps and a really slick looking interface. You can watch DVDs on the nav when the parking brake is on as well.

- Lights under the door handles that illuminate the ground as you get in

- The passenger side mirror automatically angling down when you are in reverse so you can see the curb when you parallel park

- When you let off the brake on a hill, the car keeps the brakes on for 2 seconds so you don't roll back

- More elegant keyless entry than the 370z. The Z still has a button you have to push on the door. Just grab the door handle and it unlocks before you pull it.

- Headlights turn in the direction you are steering.

- Rain sensing wipers

- doors lock automatically when you start driving over 5mph. car senses when you leave your key in the car or trunk and won't let you lock them in.

I can go on. I've been driving japanese cars my whole life until recently. There are just so many small design details that I just love in german cars. It's like when I bought my first mac. They really think about every little detail in the car. I guess what I'm trying to say is if people question why anyone would pay more for a BMW over a nissan that performs just as well and is considerably cheaper, the mac vs pc analogy makes sense in some ways. But if you don't care about the little extras, then this is all just a moot point.

I do think japanese cars are much more reliable and better built in the sense that things that shouldn't break over time don't. I read about so many random complaints about BMW problems. Most of it having to do with electronic issues. But I'm giving them a chance. Their 3l I6 twin turbo motor really won me over. Hell, I have 2 cars with this engine right now. :p I have no brand loyalty when it comes to cars. I just buy what fits my wants, needs and tastes at that given moment.

Interesting facts there and a very informative enjoyable post. :)

If I stated that anyone was bashing me or the 370 please repost it. I have no need to be defensive, what is it that I'm defending. Two reputable sources listed the 370 the winner over the 135. I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure they have a bit more knowledge regarding their test results than any of you on this site. Case closed, now continue posting your rides....

Oh yeah the 370z came in 2nd to the Porsche Cayman S

Then why are you posting comparisons that have the Z beating the 135i? All radiant is doing is posting why he didn't like the Z. That is his opinion and his taste. Nothing is going to change it even from reputable car review sites/mags.

Curious, How can the S5 be out for 1 year when it wasn't even available as the Audi A5 until late summer 2008 in Europe or in North America?
According to Left Lane News, it's been out for almost a year and a half, actually...

LeftLaneNews said:
...Manual S5s arrived in dealer showrooms in November of 2007 with the automatic version arriving in the spring of 2008.

The manual transmission S5 was available when the A5 was first launched in 2007. I bought mine late February '08...
