Easy solution then.

Buy a vehicle( like the E92) that can fit a V8 in the engine bay. And then swap in the LS3. Didn't say it had to be a GM vehicle, just a Small Block V8.

You can buy one from the factory. It's called an M3. Long term maintenance is going to be the real deal on that car, but it sounds just like a Corvette from the driver's seat.

You can actually buy such a thing.

Hartge (german BMW tuner) 150i. 5L V8, 450HP engine from the M5 series.

That's actually a V10 from the current M5 and the car is called the Hartge H50. Turner Motorsports did the swap. Turner showed the car at the 2007 Bimmerfest in Santa Barbara. The car is a beast.

Mostly new photos, but added a few older ones for the sake of being comprehensive. Fun car, but there's a small chance I might be moving on soon so definitely not going to put another penny into this car.

Few from my latest shoot:

It's a 2009 135i 6-speed manual with a bunch of stuff. :)

that car is freaking awesome.

Well yeah, but how well does the 4.0 V8 respond to mods? The Small Block is famous for cheap mods with big power gains..... ;)

The M3 doesn't need any mods. It's an awesome car out of the box.

I had a 2005 M3. I tracked the car and the only mods I ever made was to add stainless brake lines & fluid, and to use different pads between street and track. Otherwise it was bone stock. It didn't need anything more. Every report I've gotten from those I trust is that the E92 is even better.

wow those old man emu lifts are expensive, I just checked them out $755 for a 1.5in, granted it does come with leaf springs, but I think i've seen them from rubicon express way less than that. Old man emu lifts must have higher quality parts.

That's a good idea, my mine doesn't have cruise control either. How was it to install?

Supposed to ride better than stock. Pay for quality I guess. I am on a couple jeep forums and one person was parting out a 2000. Got it for 100 shipped. You need to get the vacuum actuator, the cruise buttons and a clockspring. i drove across the US from Seattle to Philly w/o cruise. Wish I would have bought it sooner.

Haven't put it in yet, but it seems easy. Hardest is pulling the steering wheel, but you can rent one for free from autozone/schucks. Jeepforum.com has a great write up.

So is the Corvette and CTS-V, but I do not see people stop wanting to modify the beasts. :D

I am not into modifying myself. I think a 436 HP LS3 C6 Grand Sport is plenty powerful enough for me. But, those who like to do mods, it is no secret the Small Block V8 is one of the best engines to do mods on considering how cheap bolt ons can give the engine big power gains.

Very cool. My wife and I love watching rally, especially WRC. Petter is one of our favorite drivers, and we're glad he has a competitive car again. Maybe he can get his hair cut this year. ;)

BMW doesn't usually leave much on the table when it comes to engine tuning. If someone wants a lot more power, they'll have to go the forced induction route. It won't be cheap.

You quoted a post that specifically mentioned an E92, so your reference to a 1er was not clear.

I know the N54 is mod friendly. People have it pumping out 400 HP.

Though a lot of people are complaining about the N55 not being mod friendly.

That turbo is why I qualified my statement with a usually. Turbocharged cars are usually very amenable to software changes.

edit: my M54 will need a blower to gain much of any power. One of my missions at this year's Bimmerfest will be to ask the FI vendors about CARB certification on their products... On the other hand, the CHP occasionally reminds me that I probably DON'T need a faster car. The last reminder was last August, so I have to be on my best behavior for another year or so (traffic school eligibility - I have no points on my record).

The ALMS race version of the engine produces 480 HP. The limited production M3 GTS (sold out and not for US market) will have 450 HP, but it also loses 400+ lbs of weight, so that's worth roughly 40 HP. It seems the V8 of the E92 M3 has more to offer in terms of tuning. The S54B32 engine of the E46 M3 was highly tuned out of the box, but you could still get decent improvements (30+ HP) with changes to intake (naturally aspirated) and exhaust, without going to forced induction.

It looks like Rogue Engineering found 28 horsepower in an S54 bolting on track headers, exhaust, intake, and new software. Of course, all that stuff has to come off again when it comes time to pass smog testing (link). I'll need to see a dyno showing something over 305 before I'll believe the 30+ claim.

I never did it myself, so I can't support the claims. Just passing them on from some time ago.

I was actually extremely happy with the balance of the car as is, so I never did anything to mine beyond the wheel wells.

I had a Z4MC (S54 powered), and it had more than enough power to suit me. Like most BMWs it was a momentum car. I stopped following tuning efforts on that car once I no longer owned one. A guy I knew from Phoenix put an ESS kit in his car and brought it close to 500HP. That was probably too much power for the car, in my opinion.

And since this is a picture thread...

My 330Ci is in the body shop getting the front end refurbished, courtesy of my insurance company (I can't believe they approved my rock chip claim). I also put new wheels and Eibach springs on it last month. I'll post a beauty shot or two once I get it back.

Very nice Z4.

I love paddock conversation for club track events. All the novices come and talk about modding the car for more horsepower so they can be faster. Rookies! Or should I say, FNGs. All the experienced drivers and instructors talk about modding their cars with lighter wheels, R-Comp tires, brakes, and suspension. They tend to have little discussion about HP.

These BMWs don't need more power. Only a small percentage of those driving them know how to take full advantage of what they have out of the box. Adding HP only upsets the great balance the cars have.
