I'm 19, and have never driven an auto. took my test on manual, always driven manuals from a 77MBG, to a 2000 M Roadster and absolutely love it. Had to back a car out the driveway once, which was an auto, and didn't know what to do! lol Was sitting there thinking what my left foot's supposed to do.

My 1973 VW Thing

This is the car that I'm learning to drive in, it's has a manual transmission. It's a 1973 Volkswagen Thing, it's a rare car only sold from 1973-1974 in the U.S

EDIT: The link won't load, so it's a yellow Thing with black interior like mine, I'll post pics when I get a chance.

Note: This isn't mine, but it's extremely close, color and all.

Here's my new baby. 2008 Subaru Forester Sports 2.5XT (Long name I know)

Congrats on your taste. That is indeed a fine looking Forester.

Mine:

This is my '08 Legacy GT. I traded in a '03 WRX, as I wanted a Legacy GT. Driving this car is something of an addiction, as I'm sure you understand. ;) It's a good addiction though, isn't it? I'm backing to taking long drives just for the heck of it, something I have not done for a long time. Oh and yes, it's a stick. The dealer had to look around a bit, to find one with a five speed, and without the spoiler (I just don't like them) and in this color.

Subes are very popular here in New England. This is not just because of the AWD technology, but because they last a long time. The most popular model around here is the Outback wagon.

Old advice is good advice: Treat it well, and it will treat you well.

Wow that is a nice looking car. Very sporty without looking stupid or being too flashy.

I'll totally agree with your New England statement. They are everywhere around here. In my area, if its not a Volvo, an Acura MDX, or a Suburban/Tahoe/Yukon, it's a Subaru. :p

If you can drive a 70s era VW with a stick, you can drive ANYTHING. (The amount of room for your foot to move to engage/disengage the clutch is insanely small--stall city.)

Totally and after driving manual for over 10 years, I don't mind traffic so much.

I live in a VERY small town, so there's never much traffic, unless there's a High School football game or something, so I guess I'm just used to driving on the open road.

And even though I do get annoyed sometimes in traffic, I don't see myself owning an automatic anytime in the near future. And for the record, I've only had 2 cars that were manual, my current '02 Elantra GT Hatch and an '01 Cavalier. Been driving for almost 8 years, taught myself how to drive a manual back in about '02 when my friend left his '87 Chrysler LeBaron 5 Speed (rare car, BTW) at my house for like a week. I had driven a manual before, but never extensively. Been loving it ever since.

And that's a nice looking Legacy GT, FrankBlack.

I love the fact that it doesn't have a spoiler. Nice and subtle looking. A sleeper.

A sleeper indeed! :D I can't really explain why I dislike spoilers. They're just not for me I guess.

So, who remembers the Subaru Brat? These were funky. Once in awhile, I'll see one on the road. Don't know who owns it, but there it is, going right along.

I remember the Brat!! Those are awesome. I'm not a truck person, but those are just different.

I knew this guy a few years ago that had one. He used it to deliver pizzas. I haven't seen him in a long time. He may even still have it.

Nice! Where did you take that? Ever hear the expression "Vanishing Point"?
It refers to the imaginary point on the horizon, where the double lines appear to converge and the road vanishes. That's what I thought of when I saw your pic. It's also the title of one of the best car movies ever made. See it if you haven't. (You want the original, 1971 version that stars Barry Newman. Avoid the 90's made-for-tv remake.)

The way the sube engines last, I wouldn't be too surprised if he did still have it.

Oddly enough, the Baja didn't sell nearly as well as Subaru thought it would, and they ceased production of it last year. I thought that had "winner" written all over it, but I was wrong. I know two guys that own them, and they love them. One is your basic suburban vehicle, and the other sees some rather rigorous use every year at this time, up in Maine.

I liked the Baja, as well. Basically a modernized version of the Brat. Very cool. Sucks they didn't sell that well.

I've always liked Subaru. I remember back when I was a kid, we used to trade cars a lot and I tried to convince my Dad to get a Loyale. I can't remember too much about it, since it was around probably 13 years ago, but I just remember really liking it. Also, a friend of my Grandma had a Legacy that I really liked. Cool cars. I wouldn't mind owning a Subaru at some point.

I. I wouldn't mind owning a Subaru at some point.

They make a nice car, no question. Not everything they do is a huge success though. They've had their failures, same as everyone else. The Justy, for example. The idea was noble enough: A utilitarian AWD mini-wagon, that even someone working at McDonald's could afford. But it had a lot of issues and didn't last long. The Subaru SVX went like a bat out of hell, but had a history of mechanical problems. Still, the SVX has a cult following today.

There are two things any prospective Subaru owner needs to be aware of. One, is that there is an overhead in terms of fuel mileage, because of the AWD. This is true of any AWD vehicle. So, if you commute a long distance, or need to drive a lot, fuel costs have to figure into your plan.

The other thing is harder to pin down. Because of the AWD, there is a strong temptation to get over-confident when there is some snow on the road, or during a heavy rain. You need to be award of this, and "beat it back". The AWD will get you through the snow, (sometimes, DEEP snow!) but you can't get too over-confident. The laws of physics get nasty, when people try to ignore them.

Nice BMW Paddykev! I'd keep that!

I also remember the Justy. I actually thought they were pretty cool little cars and the fact that they were available with AWD made them even cooler. Haven't seen too many of 'em, though.

I'm pretty big into European cars, so if I ever decide to trade my Elantra, it'll probably end up being for a European car. I absolutely love VW, but I'm always scared off by the horror stories I always hear about their reliability.

I don't see myself getting rid of my Elantra anytime soon, though. I guess we'll just see what's up when the time comes.

EDIT: Since this IS a "Post A Picture Of Your Car" thread, here's a web gallery I made of all the pics I have of my Elantra. The new Web Gallery feature in iPhoto is awesome.
