That's two 15" MBPs...the one on the right is stock with the glass, the one on the left is modded by...damn...I forget the company, but it's an aftermarket matte screen. The bezel looks pretty horrible and it removes the "MacBook Pro" branding from the bottom of the bezel. I wonder if one of the reasons Apple brought back matte to the 15"s is so that there weren't too many of these things out there hurting their brand image.

TechRestore?

To anybody who calls ANY mbp "ugly", what would you call this then:

Maybe "holy motherf***ing crap s*** out of hell what's that unproportional brick of an uber ugly behemoth"? :)

Thinkpads are an acquired taste. I personally think they look nice. Better than the generic Dells/HPs anyway.

Acquired taste is right!! I personally hate the way the Stinkpads look. Built like a tank or not they look like the same computer that I bought back in 1995. It just blows me away how some people will say they look nice but if Apple were to make anything remotely resembling the Stinkpads the forum members here would be complaining and saying that Apple blew it and they would never sell it.
On the anti-glare option for the MBP's I would think that aesthetics are secondary and the primary concern (for the one's that just GOTTA have matte) is the lack of reflections, although you still get a hard glare on the matte screen when light shines directly on it.

the picture above is a great example of gloss vs matte..

if you imagine they are both colour accurate and forget the "matte vs gloss colour debate" look at what area is affected by the light shining on both screens:

Gloss(which im sure isnt the correct term anyway as its glass): the only area colour is affected is the small section where the light hits.

Matte: half of the image seems to be washed out where the light dispurses causing a larger area of affected colour and okay it may not be as obvious but cmon how many "pros" sit with a light behind them be it matte or gloss.

I dont have my macbook pro yet, and i can totally understand what people hate about glass but i think under the right conditions they look a whole lot better than matte ..and isnt that what "pro" is about.. okay maybe they are not as useable everyday, but surely thats not what pro machines are about? if you want to sit outside and edit video or photos i hardly think that is "pro" work

opinions? ..also what id like to see is everyday picturescomparing the two screens.. not staged to show the extent/lack of reflections

im sorry but if all these people are moaning about "colour acuracy" and "ergonomics" then sitting outside is going to do more harm than any gloss/matte/whatever screen could do to the final product!

opposed to sitting in a light controlled office at a desk with an external monitor

yeah its nice to sit out in the garden with a laptop or sit in starbucks browsing the net but i woulnt dream of doing any colour accurate work in those places and should hope anyone getting payed any decent money would either!

Thanks, I thought it might be a photoshop mock to show what a AG option would look like if it had the normal bezel, I was wondering where the branding went.

You don't have to sit outside to get nasty reflections on apples mirror screens. Normal indoor lighting is enough.

That's in the evening with low lighting. You don't look at the screensaver you say? Well, it's just an example. It could also be a dark photo/layout/movie.

In fact the matte option looks like a design after thought.

Maybe that's because it was. ;)

Personally, I'm glad they brought back this option, and I think that if I were to get a MBP, I'd probably get the Matte screen. However, I'm probably just going to get an Air instead, so this is a moot point for me.

hey thanks for that, i do understand the hate for glossy ..is it not controllable in anyway?

Where did you get that screensaver?

Actually Lenovo laptops look more "Pro" than the MBP's do, IMHO.

I have a T400 (work laptop), it's a pretty rigid laptop.

Yep, those Stinkpads look more "Pro" for those nice "Pro" spreadsheets. ;)

The 15" MatteBook is Awesome!

I visited the Apple store in South Coast Plaza yesterday and checked out the new 15" MatteBook on display.

The image quality and color accuracy is awesome! With no glare or reflections!

The bezel is silver just like the 17" only wider.

Unfortunately, only the most expensive 15" MacBook Pro is available with the matte screen option in the store.

How was the hinge? Any tighter than the older models?

I'm not sure exactly what you are referring to, but I looked at a 15" matte this morning in the Apple store in Greensboro, NC, and the hinge seemed to be the same as the hinge on the glossy screen.

It has the silver bezel. Looks the same as 17". I just wanted antiglare on the nice black bezel!!! Not this tacky silver plastc bezel. I might go glossyjust for the style.... But will I care about style after a month?!! Can't decide

Professional, Rugged and unbreakable are words that come to mind. They don't apply to the newer Lenovos but IBM thinkpads were as tough as mainstream laptops ever got. Magnesium inner frame, tough hinges, channels to dispose fluids dropped on the keyboard etc etc.

Since no one has yet done so, I've taken the liberty of taking this photo of the Anti-Glare UMBP at the Regent Street Apple Store today. As you can see it is the same bezel as the 17" model but I think it looks better on the 15". The screen is amazing guys especially after watching some video on it. Well worth the £40 extra - thinking of snapping one up myself so my dad can have his glassy one back :D

about time this thread lived up to its name, cheers ;)

Thanks paddingtonpear. It looks much better than the 17-inch antiglare. Probably because its smaller, I don't know. That reminds me, Square One Apple Store opens today, gotta check it out.

He means is it as loose as the glassy 15".

Why don't they apply to the newer Lenovos? I've used both the IBM and the Lenovo made ThinkPads, and this is certainly one of the few times where the Chinese haven't screwed something up after taking it over. Also... should point out the mangnesium-alloy chassis (and carbon fiber reinforced plastic casing) are both Lenovo innovations, not IBM.
