Makes sense. I'd rather have had the white one myself, but the lead time was 4 weeks on shipping. By the way, did you go to U of I?
I love the white one, especially with the black front but I case my devices so it doesn't much matter.

Yup. Class of 2010 Chemical Engineering

Ya know, as an Android "fan boy" I can't blame people for just going back to or staying with apple, I mean, some of these newer Android handsets are almost carbon copies of the newer iPhones. Heck if it looks like an iPhone, acts like an iPhone, priced like an iPhone, locked down like an iPhone, why not just get an iPhone?

I made a thread about this a couple months ago lol

Android handset manufacturers need to innovate not imitate :(

I want my forehead and chins back, not deeper notches o_O

Pixel 3XL For the win. A Notch and a chin!

But in all honesty, I don't really see much of a difference between it an my XS Max. After a while the notch disappears (for the most part).

Which Android device is locked like an iPhone? Pixel 3 is as flexible as any device right now.

Most of them. And maintaining root on the Pixels and OnePlus requires some loops to jump through anymore.

Anything else you are at the mercy of the manufacturer.

I know locked down and root are two different things for most and most don't root anymore anyway. "Locked down" in my definition is locked bootloader.

Still, I think root is going away... :(

Meh. I mean, what kind of customization are you looking for?

95% of the time the rooted solutions are like four steps down in quality from the OOB stuff.

Mostly ad blocking. And the ability to freeze or remove bloat, which "stock" Android has way less then say Samsung, which is one reason I prefer pixels.

I’ve seen quite a few Pixel 3 XL’s out in the public recently. Kind of cool to see. I remember seeing only a couple OG Pixel users two years ago, and a handful last year for the Pixel 2. Seeing, what appears to be, a growing user base with my own eyes is nice.

Anyone I talk to with a Pixel always defaults to one reason for using and loving it: the camera of course.

Played around with the Pixel 3 XL again today at Best Buy. Damn, what a nice phone. I can't wait to own one when it's time to upgrade!

Got the Pixel Buds today. . . certainly the ease of use isn't there as it is with the AirPods. . . and of course there is the wire to contend with behind the neck and what not. However, once you have them in you hardly notice they are there, and pairing was seamless. If only I could get the gestures to work correctly. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: Yep, I'm doing it wrong. I thought you could skip tracks by default, but you cannot. You have to change the double tap from "check notifications" to "skip track"

One thing that I find insanely useful with both these and my Bose QC 35 II is that when you get a notification, assistant says "message from <name>". And then with one tap and the assistant is reading it to you. Insanely handy.

I hear stuff like this a lot, but Apple borrows the same if not more from Android but nobody ever mentions it. Full screen device, facial recognition (though they did it better), notification drop-down, wireless charging, etc, etc, we're all borrowed from Android devices. The list goes on and on. So I always find comments like this odd .

So if there were two, maybe three things I would change Pixel it would be 1) the keyboard. . . I feel like I make more mistakes than I did with the iPhone. 2) the emoji are just ugly. I have friends that use them often, and sometimes it’s hard to tell which one it is (I have the screen text to small so maybe that’s my fault), and 3) the copy / paste implementation, and the selection of text (i.e. the yellow cursor if you’re trying to get into a word to fix the spelling).

Other than those three gripes, and those are just software tweaks, I like it. I’ve not really noticed any difference in speed between the Pixel and my iPhone. Though some of the android apps could be better optimized, certainly.

I can't even get text selection to work properly on my Xr right now. I have problems on my iPad and 8 Plus as well.

I had to practice awhile to get back in the groove of typing on a small Pixel 2 but I'm finding the predictive text helps. I can't even select the predictive text on my Xr text window much of the time. It just won't respond. Crashes are freqent in different apps. I am exactly back where I was with my iPhone 7 Plus shortly after getting it and installing an iOS update on it.

I'm to the point of making Snowball my main phone again if the latest iOS update doesn't fix things.

I just have to see how my eyes get along with the pwm. It helps that I turned off auto brightness.

Is auto brightness on the Pixel 3 XL as big a mess as it is on the second generation?

Yes the emoji are hideous. Fortunately poop and eyeroll emoji are pretty much all I use, being a grump.

I know the issue you're referring to but, while autobrightness may not be as good on P3XL as it is on iPhone, it's miles ahead of the P2 and P2XL. The screen seems to just act more appropriately.
Oh thank goodness! My HTC 10 auto brightness was horrible, too. I always thought its failure on my Pixel 2 was a legacy from HTC

Text selection has been awful on my 7+ and 2018 iPad since iOS 11, and more so on iOS 12. I couldn’t even copy someone else’s post here a few minutes ago. Had to take a screenshot.

I will probably have to get a Samsung Galaxy 10 given how crappy this 7+ has become over the past week. It’s two years old and battery is declining, but I am ready to give Android another shot.

If you use Gboard as the keyboard, you can hold down on the spacebar and drag left or right to move the cursor. It's much easier than try to place the cursor by touch. Give it a try.

I'm having a hard time putting down my Pixel 3. Physically the size is almost perfect as I can use it one-handed just as fine as my iPhone 8 and it's just as snappy but still it provides more screen real estate and the built-in assistant is actually useful. It actually caught a brain fart of mine as I requested that Pocket Casts should play the latest episode of Android Authority (even though I'm not even subscribing to their podcast) and played the latest All About Android episode that I was in fact wanting to listen :D

Now I'm just still looking for a nice WearOS watch to replace the Apple Watch that I'm still wearing. A physical dual-SIM tray would also be nice so that I could get rid of some extra phones I'm now forgetting to charge.

I'm still looking for the right phone/watch combo to get me away from iOS. Sounds like you're enjoying the Pixel 3! I

Yeah I definitely am! I hope SnapDragon Wear 3100 devices become available also in Finland soon. Or when considering that I ordered my Pixel 3 from Germany as it's not locally available, maybe it's time to look at foreign stores once again.

Yeah I’ve been so frustrated with this inability to manipulate text. I see there’s an iOS update but I haven’t installed it yet. I wanted to see if there were any problems with it first.

My Xr battery was phenomenal when I first got it but one of the iOS updates has made it drain faster.

I’m just really happy that despite my temporary bricking fiasco last night, the software updates have done such a nice job of making my Pixel 2 feel like a new phone and so far everything seems to be working on it.

I don’t connect to my car via Bluetooth on any of my devices, mainly because it’s always annoyingly quirky when I do, so if there are issues there I won’t know about them. But as I gradually slip back into using this phone fully it’s been very enjoyable so far. I’m getting used to swiping on Android.

At any rate, despite being a year old it’s holding its own well enough that I would feel fine putting it up against an S10 when the opportunity arises. At some point I will need to decide between Google and Samsung because I can’t afford to upgrade on both.

I may not be able to afford the S10 at all, at the rumored prices.

Samsung has beautiful hardware and some wonderful software features. But wow, my S9+ is still on Nougat and my Pixel 2 has already had a few updates on Oreo. That’s okay. I don’t mind being on Nougat on the Samsung. It all works as well as it did when I bought it, after all.

But it kind of blows me away that my Pixel 2 doesn’t feel dated. Lol well yeah the hardware looks hideously dated. But aesthetics are one thing. Functionally, it feels like it’s keeping up.
