This is what happens when you leave the cushiony comforts of a large Android with a huge battery to a smaller device

I do not believe the Snapdragon 845 was ever meant to run on something less than a 3500mAh battery device.

Well yeah but I've had 4 updates in 2 days Vs one update in 3 weeks so there is that ... :p

I waiting on my pixel 3 xl 128gb I got from the fi deal for $499 (50% off). Fantastic deal. Will just use the fi service for 20 days. I know I can cancel it after 1 day. But just want to check it out.

I have att as main carrier.

The pixel 3 xl will be my backup phone. I will unload my Moto z 2 force ($99 deal back in December from Motorola).

I love android deals.

My iPhone XS Max will still be my main phone.

I’ve used android since day 1 g1 and had multiple androids almost every year.

The one thing android can’t really solve is rogue apps draining battery. It’s gotten better. But even on my s8 plus battery drain was 1% per hour even with every thing turned off. Standing idle stock apps. Nothing else installed.

Facebook is notorious battery drainer. So I never bother to install Facebook. Cause even disable all Facebook stuff. It still drains battery.

I don’t have good hopes on the pixel 3 xl battery life. I reckon with average usage. I will drain battery completely by 5pm daily. I’m a pretty heavy user. My iPhones plus sizes I’m usually at 30% by 5pm. But androids phones battery life has been crappy for me. Even larger size Samsung note I’ve used. Last one was note 8. Battery drain to 5pm if I’m lucky.

Maybe I get to 5pm with the pixel 3 xl.

Not as good of deal as the other day but the pixels are $200 off in the google store. Tempting..

I have had this device in my cart, PMs here from the Marketplace, and tempted to buy it yet again. Maybe i should just stop torturing myself and wait until the 3A or whatever it is called.

Updates ain't going to save you when you need that Uber late at night

Haha! Enjoy the Pixel mate.

Unfortunately these are not sold down here, even the Google South Africa employees I deal with regularly say they'd love to get them but can't, so they all use Samsung, Huawei and iPhone.

I live in a town, Uber wouldn't work for me unless I was in city! But I totally take your point. Bettery is nowhere near the P30 Pro bit I knew that going in. It's just a shame it doesn't appear to be very good at all but I'm seeing how it goes.

Maybe it just needs a few more charge cycles to get the battery running optimally. Give a few more days and see how it goes.

Not quite a fire sale but smoldering... Heard it's 200 bones off once again (probably where it should have been in the first place, or a little lower...)

So today I've had my SIXTH(!!) update on my Pixel 3 in 5 days.

They're all just security updates it would seem, but it's quite a welcome change.

I turned the AoD back on today and it did drain the battery a lot again. It would seem like it's either one of those things that stays on or off for me but I'd rather it be on as it's a nice feature to have.

The battery aside this is a really great phone. I've had no opportunity to even use the camera so I couldn't even say anything on that yet. I don't imagine it will disappoint though.

Been really impressed with it. It's a great phone and I definitely prefer it over my P30, although the zoom on that camera is absolutely out of this world. In terms of an actual phone though, it's a lot better experience which to be honest, is more important to me.

Stock Android really is difficult to beat.

When I got my Pixel 3 yesterday, it was on the December or January patch I believe... so I literally had to download / install each month's update until I got to April. Easily took several hours.

So I think that Google have missed a trick here by not making a battery case for the Pixel 3's.

I'm sure the XL battery is more than capable, but the smaller 3 leaves a to be desired.
I've had a look and found a battery case online but it's ugly as sin and reviews aren't amazing so I don't know if I want to bother.

I wonder if a Google battery case would be designed like the Apple one which is meant to limit interference with the radios on the device. Maybe they're working on something like that for the future? Part of me wants it, but another part of me would rather they just work on their battery consumption if they're not going to release something for the Pixel 3

Personally I hate battery cases....they add so much bulk and are ugly lol
I would rather carry a small portable charger to charge a device and not have to use a battery case.
We always have a couple portable battery chargers around when we go on trips or hiking and such.

The pixel are great if you take a lot of pictures. I personally feel Motorola and OnePlus do stock Android just as good, and both offer something more than Google does. OnePlus is probably the best all around phone for the price, and Motorola offers stock Android, affordable prices and Android leading battery life with the z play series and now the G7 power. Very weak cameras, though.

Yeah I hate them too really but I'd rather that than a power bank as I don't want to carry one around plus a wire when it can just be slotted into a case. If the battery was just a bit better I wouldn't have this issue I suppose ha.

Any recommendations for one? I rarely worry about battery but on weekends or trips, it would be great to have.

Google Pixel 3 is a sales disappointment, sells less than the Pixel 2

I sure hope Google doesn't pull a 'Google' and decide to eventually ditch the Pixel line of phones like they've done with do many of their other products and services.

I generally like much about the Google ecosystem and think they have an advantage over their competitors when it comes to future services but it's so hard to stay committed to them when they show no inclination to commit to so many of their initiatives.

I'm not surprised at all that it hasn't sold well.
There was so much negative press before release because of the leaks, that notch remains one of the ugliest things ever seen in a phone. And the price was way way way too high.

How they felt they could charge what they did for it for so long is beyond me and I'm not surprised people looked elsewhere. The original Pixel was the same, particularly in the UK. At the time of its release I worked part time in CPW and so many people were interested in it... Until they saw the tariff prices. They automatically flocked to the S7/8 instead and you can hardly blame them.

The Pixel 3 has suffered the same way because it's pricing is too high. With the Pixel 2 the price came down really quickly, within like a month or two of release the Pixel 2 was under £500. It's taken almost 6 months to get to that stage and now it's sub £500 I've jumped in and I love mine.

Google need to realise they've got a log way to go with hardware and software before they can have the audacity to charge those kind of flagship prices. I'm glad this has happened though as it could be the wake up call they need, though I very much doubt it.

Not to mention probably a high % of those bought were returned. I wonder if they count those as sales? I'd love to see how many they sold at full price with no sales/buy one get ones etc... The number would be shocking I bet.

All smartphone sales are down this year. Even Apple admitted they were down 18% year to year. And Samsung too.

Smartphones are just like an appliance, like a refrigerator or oven or TV. Once you have a good one, and you have no problems, there's zero reason to go out and buy a brand new one a year later. Lately year to year smartphone upgrades are pointless, unless your a super freak that needs to have that .001% edge over last years gadget, or you have money burning a whole in your wallet and you just need to spend it.

I think Apple recently revealed per a study, that the average American and European smartphone consumer is on a 3 to 4 year upgrade cycle. So no way buying a new phone every year, and nowadays not even every 2 years anymore. Most people that have a good working iPhone, the vast majority of the public, sees zero reason to go out and buy a new phone, if there current one works just fine.

Smartphones today are like PC's, you buy a nice one, and forget about it for several years until it breaks, or gets bogged down and laggy.

Not at all surprised, especially with the stiff competition in the high end between late last year and this year. The Pixel 3 XL, IMO, outside the Camera, offered nothing else to a high end consumer when compared to the likes of Samsung Galaxy Note9, Galaxy S10+, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Huawei P30 Pro and Apple iPhone X S Max.

They should go back to the old Nexus model, well specced devices at decent prices.

I'm not surprised either considering so many factors, many of which you mentioned (lackluster design coupled with high price). In the States they barely market the phones and their carrier exclusive relationship is only a hindrance to growth.

In regards to your last point though, Google rarely shows any propensity to adjust their strategy with a product or service but rather just kill it off until they have something else to try. And let's face it, after trying for years now, Google just sucks at hardware, plain and simple. With very few exceptions, they either make hardware of subpar quality or make something decent only to let it languish and die.
