Owners of pixel 3, i got few questions, i do consider moving from ip7, main reason is camera and price (i can get pixel 3 for less than ip8 here where i live - good time to try android finally), so:
- was bug with flashing screen resolved?
- was quality of calls resolved?
- if you should compare brightness of pixel 3 with ip 6s-8, is it really that bad (worse than thise iphones)
- how is battery in comparison with regular ip7/ip8 (seen many reviews bashing pixel 3xl battery life, what about poxel 3?)
- 4gigs of ram - does pixel 3 lag?
- do u use any adblocker for chrome??
Thx.

I'll speak specifically to the last one...ad blocking. Unlike desktop versions of Chrome (although, this apparently is going away as well), you cannot add an ad blocking extension to mobile Chrome. I'm not a giant fan of the mobile version of Chrome anyway (less than ideal UI compared to others) but having the ability to sync across other devices had me using it, inspire of not being able to use an ad blocker (unless you rooted). I discovered Brave as a replacement. It's built on Chromium but unlike Chrome, has native ad blocking built in. There are versions available on MacOS, iOS, and Windows so it met my need for cross device syncing. And unlike Samsung's browser, it has native integration of third party password managers like LastPass and 1Password.

I like the Samsung browser's UI better but Brave checks all other boxes (syncing, content blocking, password manager integration) so it's my go to browser on Android.

As to ad blocking, I use adaway but.... It's a root only app so, yeah. Keeping root and updated is a bit of a pita. :(

Speaking of rooting, I think there are only about a handful of us here keeping a rooted device anymore.

I do think Firefox has support for ad blocking in their extensions but last time I tried it, it was slow as tar on any device I used.

Beta downloads have resumed to roll out after a momentary pause due to bricking devices.

Downloaded this morning and helllooooooo dark mode!!

Also loving the new gesture implementation as that was one of my favorite things about iOS and it's almost identical here. Love it.

Also changed my accent colors which is a nice touch.

I went through some articles on the biggest changes but what have you guys seen or changed?

Glad to have it now.

For those of you who have the regular 3, not the 3a, I would highly recommend picking up the Pixel Stand. I would actually rank this as one of the best accessories for any phone. You can sync it so when it's docked, you can have a photo album as a screensaver. I basically have a photo album of my kids/family that changes pictures every 2 minutes.

I'm still torn on the gestures. I'm not on the beta now, but I had a lot of false actions on the back gestures, where it would launch a menu instead. So it's probably more about getting used to it, but hopefully they refine it.

I'm curious to see the future of Dark Mode too. On Beta 3, you could make everything dark in Developer Options, like 3rd party apps too, but I noticed the functionality wasn't working in Beta 4.

Really enjoying the new gestures waaaaaay more then the previous, stock version on my 3XL.

It was one of my favorite iOS features on the X line and glad they are very similar. Especially navigating web pages, going back on certain apps, and the single swipe up for the app drawer.

I really hope a fully developed dark mode across all apps occurs, that would be fantastic.

Beta 3 was really fun for that with the exception of Facebook, which did not play well with that setting. Haha

I found on the beta, that to prevent issues when trying to go back, you need to make sure you start your swipe from as close to the left edge as possible.

I’m considering purchasing the 3xl, does everybody still recommend it or better to wait for the 4xl at this stage?

I highly recommend it but also with the move by Google yesterday no one knows if an earlier release is on its way for the 4.

If you can find one in the $400 range it's definitely worth it. I got one for $450 recently so it's possible.

You can get a mint used 3 XL for around $500 or less and a new one for $699. The 4 XL is still 4 months out and will most likely start at, at least $899. So there is still value in a 3 XL at this point if you don't need the latest and greatest.

It's a great device. Whether or not to buy one now depends on the price you get. Do not pay full price in June.

I’m due an upgrade on a line I have. The carrier is knocking £400 off the device price as a special offer at the moment

64gb reduced from £872 to £472
128gb reduces from £968 to £568

Here is my mini review and a large wall of text for the Pixel 3XL (if anyone cares :))
History: Lifetime Apple/ios user. Dabbled in Android but only for a month or 2 back in the day.
Recent device history: XS Max>OP7 Pro>Pixel 3XL

Pros:
  • Camera, camera, camera!!! No surprise to anyone but this phone begs me to take more pictures of random scenery, my kids even more then before, or inanimate objects. Hands down the best camera i've used on any single phone
  • OS is so clean, smooth, and love all the quirks it offers in Call Screen, Top shot, and Always listening music playlist thingy
  • AOD I never knew i needed this in my life. It is fantastic! I find myself touching my phone less then before when at work which is a great thing and less distractions as a quick glance tells me if needed to unlock
  • Google Assistant I never thought I would use this as much as i do but in the car is where it shines!
  • Wireless charging/Water resistant-in Texas lots of pool, splash pad, and just wet moments of trying to cool off. Feels good knowing I have this again in a device. Wireless charging is something I tried to make work but I have these things everywhere including my car. Love tossing the Pixel on them again and missing that from the OP7
  • Google apps- very Apple like but better since its on any single device and wow it is so easy to use and share pics and albums with family members which i was worried about losing iMessage
  • Notifications- this isn't a Pixel 3 specific thing but coming from iOS, Android notifications have changed my life with how good they are! Love the layouts, AOD, and quick ways you can interact and manage
  • Naked build quality- this device feels fantastic in the hand and not as heavy as the XS Max or big as the OP7 Pro...too bad I am too afraid to take the case off all the time
Cons:
  • Battery life-weak to rather weak. I am a heavy user and this screen is just ok in comparison to my previous devices and i feel it needs 100% brightness all the time, especially outside. I am not getting good battery life at all. I watch the percentage drip away. Luckily wireless charging from the pro list is in play
  • Screen quality-its just ok. Maybe not fair to the Pixel after coming from the best screen in the world in the 90hz, vibrant, insanely large and seamless OP7. Also that notch is horrendous and I hope overtime I get more used to it which I probably will but again, the OP7 might have spoiled me in the short term
  • Gestures....hate them. So excited for the next version of Android. I miss Oxygen OS and their little quirks of left corner to go back, seamless app drawer call up, and dark mode!!
  • Fingerprint sensor-not a fan at all of placement and everyday use. I loved the OP7 in screen option as it was fast and could easily interact if laying on a desk. This feels dated and not convenient with location and functionality

Yes its been about 2 days and yes there will be more added to both I am sure but overall, I am absolutely loving this phone and blends the things I loved about the OP7 and iOS with the OS and the camera alone will keep me having a Pixel in my life moving forward even if in a drawer to pull out for trips/events.

Thanks to everyone here who has given me feedback and I've read this entire thread with tips and things to look for. :)
good read now to find a pixel 3 xl

Kinda blows my mind that Google hasn't come up with an answer for Android TBH.
ive wondered this as well because im sure google could make an imessage killer
Google would probably face all kinds of additional regulatory or ‘anti-trust’ issues trying to implement a required messaging app on all Android phones. And making it the default messaging platform is the only way it would approach the effectiveness of Apple Messages (at least, in the US). Otherwise, OEMs or carriers would just set their own messaging app as the default.
ive not thought of this but it makes sense

where is a new one $699

5 day vacation coming up which includes wedding, family, and other vacation type picks.

Struggling on whether to pack the 3XL or my OP7Pro.

Pro kills it in the battery department and OS/screen/experience.
Pixel its all about that camera and waterproofing for this type of trip.

I dont want to pack both so the waterproofing and camera will probably win out but still deciding.

Pixel all day! I think I’d regret not having the camera on a trip like that.

Mannnn I know I sound like a broken record, but I HATE the battery on my Pixel 3.

It's total garbage.

It's probably the only negative thing I can say about the phone though. Everything else is just sublime.

it's that locker you keep it in.....

All jokes aside..... I agree the battery life on my PcXL is not that great. I really hope the P4 comes with a bigger battery. Google can't rely on software optimisations for better battery life. I would not mind a slightly thicker P4 for a say 4000 mAh battery.

Has anyone installed the latest Q beta in their Pixel 3? If so is it stable enough for daily use?
Does the 3a XL count? That's what I have and it's very stable. Only come across a couple of UK banking apps not working. Very fluid and the dark mode & gestures are great.
