Google and other companies have been doing what apple plans to start doing for years now, even adobe does it.

When it comes to privacy google is nowhere near as proactive as apple, not like apple went behind everyone’s back and switched this feature on, people know it’s happening, if they don’t like it, they can leave, privacy isn’t going to be better with android, if anything, it’ll be a lot worse.

Nope. Nobody has ever built an on device scanner capable of scanning local files. Everyone else's implementations have been on server which means they're only ever capable of scanning images on their server. This implementation has the capability to scan all files on the phone even if you have iCloud Photos turned off.

And no, Apple claiming to only scan photos that are about to be uploaded to iCloud is irrelevent in the same way that building a backdoor into common encryption technology is catastrophically wrong regardless of whatever authority is claiming to not abuse it.

It's never about what the authority promises today, one has to always consider what the technology is actually capable of doing. If it's capable of being abused then it will be abused.

Reminder that the Photo DNA technology which everyone promised to exclusively use to stop CSAM is actively used to stop "terrorist propaganda material" which is an absolute black hole definition. There was a very recent case of a college student's Google account getting shut down because the photos and videos of human rights abuses in the West Bank she was using as part of her academic assignments were flagged as "terrorist material." No matter what you think about the Israel/West Bank situation, what happened to her is alarming and should be cause for concern.

With the Biden administration flagging climate activists and anti-capitalist activists as 'domestic terrorists' under the same umbrella category of white supremacists and fascists, I have absolutely no interest in any form of "blacklist material scanning" technology on any of my devices or any cloud service I use.

There is nothing to stop Apple from not implementing this technology AND enabling full zero access iCloud services for everyone. No legal requirement, nothing. They don't do it simply because they put appeasing authorities over protecting their customers.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing! I wonder how this compares to what Apple is planning to use or if they’ll even be using the same system in some form.

Read above. Apple's implementation is light years more invasive and dangerous than anything that's been rolled out to date. There's a reason security and privacy experts are freaking out about this more than any other Photo DNA implementation to date.

Yep it's true. I haven’t had an iPhone in probably seven years and was itching for a change to get away from Android and get better battery life and brighter nicer screen tech, so I picked up the 12 Pro Max.

Big mistake. iOS still sucks and is garbage. But the hardware and build quality on this phone really is fantastic. Top of the line best built smartphone I've ever owned. The flat display is what every smartphone should have. Battery life great. Screen is awesome.

The perfect phone to me would be the iPhone 13 Pro Max running stock android 12.

For sure this fall I’m ditching the 12 Pro Max and going back to a Google Pixel.

Ha no I know exactly what you mean and I know you prefer Android overall.
And I do agree that the current iPhone is a great design.

iOS is ok for me now. I've just accepted it for what it is but am still really excited for the Pixel 6. I don't like curved displays like a lot of others on here, but am willing to push past it to get that additional camera on the 6 Pro. And the additional size which I could do without, but am really interested to check this phone out.

I skipped the 5, and have no regrets for doing so as it didn't really excite me in any way. But the 6 has certainly got me interested. :)

Wow, and wow;

It's no Pixel 6 or anything but more like a slightly better Pixel 5 with a huge battery and larger screen.

Basically the Pixel 5 XL we didn't get last year.

This might be the phone I get to start experimenting with modded google-free Android alternatives.

The 5a does sound kind of interesting, probably a bit easier on the ol wallet. Might be a good tinker toy for me and perhaps a decent upgrade for my mom and sis who are using overpowered maxed out XL 2s still (so am I kind of).

It also kind of don't make sense for having multiple pixels. I'm back to a holding pattern for the pixel 6 XL.

I just wish it had wireless charging. I get why it doesn’t, but it’s a convenient feature that I miss when using my 4a.

Is the 5a supposed to have the same sensor they've been using for years? At least it's out before the 6, last year their release schedule made no sense.

Agree, I will wait to see the Pixel 6 Pro in person before purchasing, but that or the normal 6 or maybe the 5a even will be my next phone most likely.

Thanks for expanding on this. Yes if there’s a new on-board component to this, that changes things. Will look into it & keep in mind.

the phone is also too wide and too heavy...

I agree with everything you said.

Ugly rear;
Wow that color doesn’t look as good as it does on the Google store site. Bummer, as that was my pick of the Pros. It’s not horrible, it’s just not what I was expecting. I like the coral color for the regular 6. But I suppose I’ll just choose white again.

I actually like the looks
because it reminds me of some vintage Bakelite radios I’ve always admired. Of course living with the quirky design may prove challenging. It’s a very large phone with a piece that sticks out. And the pros have those godawful rounded edges.

I much prefer the looks of the smaller 6. But I’m on vacation and find the lack of serious zoom on my iPhones frustrating now that the S21 Ultra has spoiled me so rotten.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max and even the 12 mini do take a better video and now surpass the Samsung in stereo audio (oddly my S7 Edge produced the most clear stereo audio I’ve ever heard from a phone camera). But when you’re at the beach perched on a high vista and want to zoom in on a shrimp boat in the distance, the iPhone’s virtues fade a little in comparison. And then there was the either super drunk/high or crazy or just plain quirky person carrying an inflatable…never mind. What happens at the beach stays at the beach even though I’ve got nosy S21 Ultra zoom photos of it all. 🤣

Oh speaking of these crazy zooms, there was this dude off in the distance on the balcony of another condo and I noticed he had his phone aimed right into our window that faces his. I’m thinking oh he better not be perving! So I grabbed my Samsung and aimed the shady zoom right back at him and I guess he saw me because he smashed his phone to his ear like he was talking but then realized he was hopelessly busted so ran his butt out of sight! 😆 It was the battle of the perv zooms! And yes I saw his phone and it looked identical to my black S21 Ultra. Normally, we can’t see into each other’s buildings that easily, but in the evening it’s possible.

I do not really want to carry around such a gigantic phone as the 12 Pro Max I am typing on now. For the most part I don’t. I make do with what I can get from the plain old 12 Mini. But if I am going to own a huge slab phone at all, I’m glad to have one decked out with the most capable cameras. I’m really giving Apple serious stink eye if they really aren’t putting a good zoom lens on their pro models this year. 2.5x optical yet another year is really sad, if true. I think the iPhones do a superb job of capturing objects in motion. I’ve caught a cicada mid-flight. Apple is just missing that zoom. They’re so frustrating with how they slowly drip out the upgrades. I could not care less about pro motion type scrolling, but for the people who do care, it’s been a long wait for you all. That’s how I felt about stereo audio and now periscope zoom and AOD.

Agreed

zoom is my only negative about iPhone cameras. Hoping periscope lens Does come in 2022.It’s fantastic for most shots certainly for moving objects

pixel and iPhones only phones that nail this all the time IMO

Tig, I was catching up on my reading here and some of your July posts made it seem like you liked how apps looked and worked on iOS, even better than on your Pixel. What’s soured you on iOS since last month? Or was I misinterpreting what you meant, and you think the apps do still look and work smoother on iOS but the overall OS environment sucks?

I find some things are easier to do on Android because Apple’s policy on in app purchases mean you have to exit an app, like Amazon Kindle for example, and go to the Amazon website or their commerce app to buy a book. On an Android phone I can stay in the Kindle app and buy my book.

But I find conducting business overall is smoother on iPhones because Face ID works better for me than fingerprint authentication even with a good fps. It’s a shame Google dropped whatever it was doing for Face ID on the pixel 4. Was that Soli?

You sure about that? Google better privacy than apple, yeah right. 🤦‍♂️😂

Google has been doing what apple plans to start doing for years now. 🤦‍♂️

No one says anything when google has been doing ti for years, but once the tech juggernaut does it, people lose their minds.

The pot calling the kettle black

It's how Apple carried themselves. Whatever persona a company or individual puts out, is what's expected of them. A great portion of Apple's marketing is privacy, so it's only right people are calling them out.

I can understand the companies wanting to keep criminal content off their own servers. I’m not sure what their legal obligations and penalties would be if they are found to be holding content like child pornography. But implementing preemptive scanning at the device level is definitely worth questioning.

Also it’s so complicated when you get into the information investigative journalists or private investigators have to hold or transmit on their computers and phones.

Oh well that’s all being discussed to death on other parts of the forum. Suffice it to say I’m not making my purchase decisions pro or against based on any of this. What bothers me most is data that’s considered public information like all the information about my house and the people living in it.

This means my mother can be in trouble for keeping that embarrassing naked baby photo of me? LOL
