Ok, so I declared my interest in the Pixel 6 Pro and my husband’s response was “Yeah fine, whatever.” Meaning it’s fine and there’s room as far as the budget is concerned. And I have a certain amount of leeway because my entire family pretty much ignored my 55th birthday due to it being an insanely unpleasant stressful year for everyone, so that means I can just pick something and that’s my gift.

I’m picking a Pixel. (And a costume jewelry bracelet and new Skechers tennis shoes that I’m wearing😬).

So, now I need to figure out my strategy. There’s the chip shortage so does that mean the phones could be scarce? My past Pixel purchases were in the winter and I got Black Friday type deals. But I don’t know if I should chance waiting that long this year, if there’s a possibility of supply constraints.

But with Google’s googly track record on quality control and this being a new chip and new design, is it better to wait for early adopter feedback and all the reviews?

I’ll have to figure that out. I dearly want to get the Pixel 6 because I like the looks better. I like the flat display better. I like the size better. But dangit, I don’t want another phone that’s only got wide and ultra wide lens choices. My Mini is already like that. I want the good zoom of the Pixel 6 Pro, so I can be all up in your business snooping! 😆

Pixel is tempting I just hope they give you better upgrade options than just pay on the google store. They need an upgrade programme IMO

Ideally they’d give me decent money on my 3XL, but the last time I checked, when I preordered a Pixel 4 (that I canceled) the trade in was mere pocket change. Which is why I was shocked Samsung was willing to give me $350 for the 3XL in trade for a Z Flip 3.

I don’t really have any other phones I’m willing to trade away for the Pixel 6/6 Pro, so I’m likely to pay through the nose for it.

My green 12 mini is going toward a 13 mini next spring. My 12 Pro Max goes toward iPhone 14 Pro-Whatever in 2023 or gets passed to my sister-in-law, depending on circumstances. Samsung S21 Ultra likely stays put. If the Pixel 6 Pro blows me away, I would probably temporarily discontinue upgrading with Samsung until I’m ready to make the move to a foldable. And I’d continue on with Google for my Android phablets.

Because my goal was really always to get back to just one Android phablet, but Google kept staggering around, and that kept me loyal to Samsung, who keeps getting more interesting and innovative. But there’s a certain charm about Pixels that keeps me interested and hopeful. It doesn’t hurt that this year they’ve gone with an Art Deco, Bakelite Plastic look! I’m that shallow! Lol!

Just out of curiosity is anyone still rooting their pixels? I got to admit I've from actually flashing roms on my older nexus phones on my break at work to nowadays just root and lately it's a bit groan inducing to try to maintain even a rooted device which is to basically block ads (on an adware based platform).

I still like the cleaner pixel experience however.

I haven't rooted in probably 7 or 8 years.

Dear God, that bump on the back is AWFUL. I'm going to grab a Pixel 5 ASAP.

I was hoping the Pixel 5 price would come crashing down when the 6 and 6 Pro launch but with the rumors of the 5a at $450 with 2GB less RAM and no mmWave, I think my hopes will be dashed.

I think it will crash when the 6 comes out -- at least in official channels. Ebay scalpers probably will rob you, but there's alternatives. Is 2GB enough these days? I can do without mmWave personally, but if you require it, I don't know where else to turn for the time-being.

Well it has 6GB which is 2GB less than the 5. I am sure that will work for most people and probably would work for me.

I have T-Mobile and no plans to switch since they have the best network here and like twice the spectrum that Verizon and AT&T do so I’m not finding myself demanding mmWave either.

What I want is a reasonable cost to see if I can transition away from OSes that spy on you to a de-Googled experience with CalyxOS. The battery life on the Pixel 4 is terrible plus I would lose the 5G I have on my 12 Pro Max, the Pixel 3 additionally loses software support this year which will mean it will be on stagnant Calyx builds, and the 4a 5G is still too expensive for what it is.

The 5a really does appeal to me in most ways though because of the rumored 6.4” screen. That’s going to be a lot easier to get used to coming from 6.7” than going to the 6” Pixel 5.

I guess we will see what happens. I am going to wait for Black Friday sales before I decide anything. I haven’t taken the 6 Pro off the table completely, depends on pricing when I’m ready to buy.

Lol, for people who say they wish they could have stock Google-style Android on Samsung hardware, well with the Pixel 6 series, once you look at where most of the critical parts are coming from, we kind of are https://www.androidcentral.com/android-12-beta-hints-samsung-50mp-camera-google-pixel-6. Sorry for the long link but for some reason iOS has been freaky about letting me highlight text for link insertion.
Well, I knew by the way the content creators whom had hands-on time with it… the camera is going to be game changer. I feel this was year or two in the making…. They practically punted last year (maybe the year before too) to push all their chips forward this year.

If I was camera phone enthusiast.. the Pixel 6/6 Pro will the camera phone to beat. But the problem with Android cameras… from the reviews I read, they do a poor job with social media interactions. As far as I know… iPhone tends to be the best in terms of sharing pictures or doing anything associated with social media.

Yeah I’ve heard the same about Android and social media. Fortunately for me, this and Android Central and a couple of other hobby forums are the extent of my interest in social media, though I do look at Twitter a couple of times a month. But I’m not posting photos anywhere but here.

yeah sharing to stuff like Snapchat, Instagram i think is not as good as IOS. TikTok is another social media app which is better optimised on IOS.

pixel pro does get me excited and I think it will be what I may trade my s21 ultra in. But won’t make any decisions until reviews are out. I have never really tried stock android so I would be switching for also experiencing different software as all I’m used to is iPhones and Samsung.

Pricing is my biggest issue on the Pix 6.

I'd absolutely get another Pixel as I still have 4a and it's been great. So still not coming with wireless charging i don't know what they will cost.

Can't comment on sharing on social media. The ones I use it's been fine. I don't use Snapchat or Tik tok.

The Pixel 6 should have wireless charging?
It shouldn't? Rather have that than water proof. Not a need for me.

It's not a big deal to plug it in either but I have a couple of wireless stands in the house I used with my Galaxy S9, so it would be nice.
But if it's cheap enough, no big deal if it don't have it.

I'm saying your post came across like you're expecting it to not have wireless charging.

So, I’ve been paying more attention to everything since I decided yeah, I am going to give Google another chance and especially since Android 12 is coming up. Everything looks all new and an interesting break from the past.

And I realize the 6 and 6 Pro are going to have a Samsung Exynos 5G modem. And I further realize I have no idea if Samsung makes good modems. I’ve had nothing but happiness with my Qualcomm modems in Samsung phones. I didn’t even know Samsung made modems! Does anyone know anything about Samsung modems? I’m probably mostly going to be running it on WiFi since I’m carrying my smaller phones as phones and using my slabs for media and cameras. But I still want a good phone experience if I decide to put my sim into it.

My only worry with the Pixel is Google’s track record of launch issues. There’s generally always something wrong at launch, although that may be unfair of me to say as I don’t recall hearing of any with the 5 last year. But prior to that, there was always some sort of QC problem.

I really like the colours this year, but the Pro seems to have a bit more of a boring mix. It’s like they’ve gone all iPhone, keeping the boring colours for the more expensive model and using fun colours that actually look better on the cheaper model.

Either way, I cannot WAIT to see these cameras. Pixel has always trounced everything for me so I’m excited to see what they do with the 6 Pro.
