My only worry with the Pixel is Google’s track record of launch issues. There’s generally always something wrong at launch, although that may be unfair of me to say as I don’t recall hearing of any with the 5 last year. But prior to that, there was always some sort of QC problem.

I really like the colours this year, but the Pro seems to have a bit more of a boring mix. It’s like they’ve gone all iPhone, keeping the boring colours for the more expensive model and using fun colours that actually look better on the cheaper model.

Either way, I cannot WAIT to see these cameras. Pixel has always trounced everything for me so I’m excited to see what they do with the 6 Pro.

I'm in the same boat. I have a feeling the Pixel 6 will be a very good phone at launch, but an excellent phone about 4 months after launch. Its the Google way. It takes them a while to work out kinks in software and the first batch or two of hardware usually comes with a defect before Google finally resolves it. I remember battery life in the Pixel 4 XL being awful until 3 or 4 software updates.

The big unknown here is Tensor. As we've seen with Samsung, the growing pains with in-house SoCs can be pretty big. Google are not only trying to hit certain performance metrics but also tie everything in with the software and not have issues like throttling. It'll be interesting to see how they do with this being the first generation. The big upside here is that Pixel software is already incredibly smooth, but now with complete control over the SoC they should really be able to optimize everything.

Yeah they’ve been consistently having qc issues even with last year’s models. I’ve been casually keeping track of that. I’m not happy about that. I’m also never happy with Google’s history of abandoning products people actually love and use.

But this phone looks to be a lot of Samsung hardware. More so than even my US version of the S21 Ultra!!! Samsung hardware with Google’s software vision? 😯

Samsung have their share of qc issues, too, of course, but overall, I have confidence in them. I just have major questions about the quality of their modems since I’ve never had occasion to use one in US products.

I haven’t really taken many risks in the last couple of years, so I was contemplating taking a little dive into adventure with either the Z Flip 3 or the Pixel 6 Pro.

I recently had one of those so-called milestone birthdays, but didn’t really do anything for it because of the difficult times we are in.

However, after seeing the toll taken on my mom and father-in-law by age related problems like dementia and rheumatoid arthritis, I realized with a shock I’m really moving along fast on the conveyor belt of life myself and if I’m very lucky, I have about 15 years left to play around with this tech before age and chronic health issues I already have make it a challenge. o_O

So, to celebrate the birth of the wonder that is me, 😆 I’m going to do what I’ve been doing and play with an interesting new phone. It may be a complete disaster but it won’t be my only phone so…what the heck.

Of course, I am aware I’ve already got too many phones, so I am not going to do like years past and get all the ones that catch my fancy. Sigh…or I would get both the Z Flip 3 and the Google Pixel 6 Pro.

No, I’m just picking one and am going all in. I’ve decided for better or for worse I’m going to get the 6 Pro and try to immerse myself more fully in what they’re trying to do with Android 12. My S21 Ultra keeps me involved in One UI, which I still like very much.

But my Pixel 3 XL’s shortcomings didn’t induce me to stay immersed in Google’s version of Android very long. I do miss it, and did go back to my Pixel 2 for awhile. But I want what I hope is more premium hardware on which to enjoy it. I actually didn’t have to have state of the art. I did order a Pixel 4a once. I canceled out of concern the display specs would aggravate my pwm sensitivity.

This time around though, I like the crazy Art Deco Bakelite look on the Pixel 6’s and I have decided go big or go home. I’m gonna button mash like hell to try and get it on release day.

My only other planned phone purchase coming up would be iPhone mini 13. Of course I’m going to drool over the S22 Ultra. But my goal is to stay focused on pure Android Google-style. However, all bets are off if it sucks. 😆 I always have backup plans!

Having previously owned all the Pixel phone range the 6 / 6 Pro definitely reminds me of the Nexus 6P.

New hardware is great - Google Tensor custom chip sounds mega interesting, massive 5000mAh battery and the Pro cameras could be a beast with the 50mp and new sensors.

Primary issue I have with Google is the way they try to separate / distinguish the two 6's:
6 has a flat screen, 6 Pro a curved screen. In my opinion a flat screen like the iPhone 12/12 Pro works much better so I want that on the 6 Pro.
6 has and matte black camera bar, 6 Pro a glossy black. Matte black looks much better aesthetically to me.

As others have mentioned, only thing missing from the iPhone 12/12 Pro camera was a decent zoom and to improve the macro camera quality. I was reading Apple has been granted a patent for iPhone periscope lens but not due until 2022.

When it comes to video, Google really need to step up - the iPhone 12/12 Pro smoked the Pixel 5 for both video picture and video sound quality.

I am personally excited for the future of Google Pixel but, until Google finally take video quality seriously, I will not even consider switching from the iPhone this year.

I’ve actually had some issues with iPhone video quality this time around with the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max (I briefly owned them all). There’s sometimes a weird wavy effect that’s plagued video while panning across a scene.

Yes, the iPhone is not perfect - I occasionally notice video artefacts such as lens flare and colour differences/quantisation which results in unnatural rendering in parts of the scene with subtle colour gradients. Also the exposure does drop off when light gets really dim.

Having said that, I think the iPhone is still up there as the best for video along with the Huawei P40 Pro.

Me being a big time Pixel fan, I currently own the iPhone 12 Pro Max, looking to go back to a Piel 6 this Fall, but the 12 Pro Max camera is just ok in my opinion. For video, yes it's amazing and fantastic, but Portrait mode shooting I think the Pixel's blow it away, same with Night Mode.

That’s an interesting green color. I like it. I’m hoping the 5a 5G does really well. While I am fascinated by the looks of the Pixel 6 phones, I do kind of wish they were more like the 5a 5G, with a very simple straightforward look, flat practical display, 3.5 mm headphone port, and ordinary fingerprint scanner that I know works well.

I will never cease to be bemused and irked that it’s the mid range phones that are truly conveniently equipped and practical and it’s the high end ones that are missing features we once took for granted and have the stupid design quirks.

Damn! That’s nice! If it doesn’t work out for me with the 6 (price vs quality), I’ll consider it. It would be a solid upgrade from my 3XL.

I do have my heart set on the periscope zoom of the 6 Pro though. I wonder if the 5a 5G will hurt sales of the regular Pixel 6.

Because who would want to pay a premium for the 6 that doesn’t have an optical zoom at all, when they could get the 5a 5G at a great price and spec point. Because even with the older camera hardware, a Pixel camera gets the job done. They’d have to be intensely keen on trying out the Tensor build and new camera sensors, but not want to commit further money to the Pro (that’s likely to be priced to sting). Or absolutely enthralled with a particular color only offered on the smaller phones. So far, going by comments on boards, I’ve seen people not very happy about the state of affairs with the regular 6.

I really think they should have put optical zoom on the regular 6. It didn’t have to be a fancy periscope zoom. A modest 2x would have been better than nothing!

I like this size, I thought the Pixel 5 was too small, but don't like the giant Ultra / Plus / Max size phones either. The 5a is right in the middle.

Another review backs up how good the battery is. https://www.androidcentral.com/google-pixel-5a-review

That’s what’s wrong with my 3XL. Not much battery life.
This phone looks like such a winner for anyone who doesn't feel the need to pay top dollar for flagship specs. I'm one of those, as I'm looking to tone down my daily driver phone requirements and move most of my uses over to the cellular version of the coming iPad Mini.

But they're only releasing it in the US and Japan. Seriously, I don't get Google.

You know what, I'm actually not that blown away by the 12 Pro Max camera either. It's fast, zooms well, great sharpness, great picture detail. But really, many of the photos I take just don't end up looking very good. While my girlfriend snapping the same scene with her Huawei Mate 10 Lite gets a nicer photo.

Sure, the image quality doesn't come near mine when we look at our photos on a bigger screen, but most of the time we just don't. I get tons of orange faces in the sunlight whereas they look natural on hers, I get sterile colors on everything when the light is a bit off, they're natural and alive on hers. Etc. I guess I just don't like the particular flavour of the 12 Pro Max camera. It's taken a while to realise, because I've taken for granted that the 12PM cam would blow everything away until the next generation of phones. But honestly, I've been disappointed by it so many times.

Nature photos though, that's where my phone cam destroys hers. Landscape shots at whatever time of day, trees, flowers, waterfalls, stuff like that look absolutely stunning when shot with my phone and viewed on my 12" iPad Pro. Truly like a window directly to right then and there. Like magic. But her camera is so much better at capturing social events, people, animals, interiors...which at the end of the day is more important to me.

So anyway, that's another factor that would make me interested to try the 5a right now. Man, I'm just gonna go ahead and be a bit frustrated about this right now.

So, I’ve been paying more attention to everything since I decided yeah, I am going to give Google another chance and especially since Android 12 is coming up. Everything looks all new and an interesting break from the past.

And I realize the 6 and 6 Pro are going to have a Samsung Exynos 5G modem. And I further realize I have no idea if Samsung makes good modems. I’ve had nothing but happiness with my Qualcomm modems in Samsung phones. I didn’t even know Samsung made modems! Does anyone know anything about Samsung modems? I’m probably mostly going to be running it on WiFi since I’m carrying my smaller phones as phones and using my slabs for media and cameras. But I still want a good phone experience if I decide to put my sim into it.
Here we have gotten Samsungs Exynos SOC for years which resulted in people importing Qualcomm variants from Asia because the Exynos in previous generations were way more power hungry and had not as good graphics performance.
Seems that with S21 (Exynos 2100) the difference is quite not as big anymore when tested against Qualcomm 888. But then again I have read of people having Qualcomm 888 devices complain of not as good battery life so who really knows what is going on with current gen 🤷‍♂️

I’m wondering if the limited distribution is due to concerns they won’t have access to enough chips.

I’m not sure I will even be able to secure a 6 Pro for myself. That’s why I’m frustrated my husband won’t commit to trying to preorder with me. I think he could really enjoy getting back on a Pixel again. But I’m worried if he doesn’t do it at launch, it could be quite a wait until there’s stock again. Google was always having stocking issues when I was trying to order from them even in pre-pandemic days.

I’m hoping to get the amber or white phone but I’ll take whatever I can get and stick a nice case on it.

Getting back to cameras, I’ve always admired how Pixels play with light. iPhones and Samsung’s often sort of flatten light out. I’m not sure how to explain it. But I guess the best way is to say in a Pixel photo I will see light bouncing off of surfaces just as I see it with my eyes. My iPhones often don’t show these subtle reflections, it’s all processed out or their sensors don’t pick it up. Sometimes Samsung does. Pixel consistently has.

Got to admit I’ve never had the chance to try a pixel this year is the only yeas I’ve felt tempted.

13 pro max and pixel 6 pro could from the sounds be Ana amazing camera showdown. I do prefer iPhone color science over the Samsung phones for pets, people and portrait mode which are what I use the most. For stills of sea and buildings I do prefer the ultra for that.

Wonder what zoom we will see with the pixel. I know it has 4x periscope but wonder what it maxes out to.

Chip shortage may have something to do with it, but they've already been bad at selling their devices in Europe, and they've never sold the Pixels in Scandinavia. Up here basically everyone buys their phones through carriers and maybe they haven't considered it profitable to go that way or something. But actually yeah, a chip shortage might explain why they're not releasing the 5a in Europe whatsoever. In which case I just typed this whole paragraph for nothing :D

Got room for an extra passenger on that boat to frustration island? Or have you already arrived? 😆
Absolutely, the more the mer...more frustrated! :D I'm already there, basking in grumpiness on Dismay Beach, but most welcome to join me.

I know some people don't like curved screens on phones (myself included), but at least with the 6 Pro it looks like it's just the glass that curves slightly and not the actual display area.

Still think screen protectors are gonna be a ball ache. That’s one of the things I like about flat screens - most can have a screen protector on that you don’t know is there. Start trying to put one on a curved display and its generally a painful experience. :(

Never had a problem with screen protectors and curved screens. Probably because I can't stand them and never use them. Takes a lot of carelessness to scratch a screen these days.

Oh is that why people don’t like phones without flat screens? I don’t use a screen protector either. Hasn’t been an issue.
