So...could this be what is ailing our 14/16" MBP batteries?

MacOS allows Intel-based MacBook users to select a "Manage Battery Longevity" checkbox option in the "Battery Health" pop-up window. There is no such option to disable this in MacOS for M1 MacBooks. So has MacOS reduced my capacity based on my usage? All I do is leave it plugged in all the time and every so often unplug to use on the couch.

That makes zero sense for two reasons.

  1. The Optimized Battery Charging feature reduces battery aging, not the opposite.
  2. The information is (at least at time of writing) incorrect. I certainly have the toggle to turn it off on my 14" running Ventura 13.0.1, and I believe it was there from the start, a year ago. That article is two years old.

I don't think we are talking about the "Optimized Battery Charging" option that we all have on our MBPs. From the article, it sounds like "Manage Battery Longevity" was/is a separate feature that apparently is now automatically built into our Apple Silicone MacBooks....separate from "Optimized Battery Charging." I think they are saying Intel MBPs have checkboxes for both "Optimized Battery Charging" which charges only to 80% and "Manage Battery Longevity" which temporarily reduces your actual capacity...that they are two separate features.

If you look at at the comparison graphic in the link you will see the missing window option...I don't recall ever seeing this option on my 16" MBP, and given the 2020 thread I posted regarding the M1 13"MBP and MBA, they didn't then either...anybody else?

Can someone with an Intel-based MBP/MBA running Monterey or later confirm there are options for both "Optimized Battery Charging" and "Manage Battery Longevity"?

Sorry, I obviously didn't read carefully enough.

I don't think I have ever heard about, or at least not registered, the longevity feature.

I just checked a 2016 MacBook Pro running Monterey 12.6. It has a checkbox for "Optimized Battery Charging" in the Battery preference pane, and a "Manage Battery Longevity" checkbox after clicking "Battery Health..."

MBP M1. Switched to Aldente two months ago. That doesn't look good I guess.

2021 16" MacBook Pro M1 Pro: Coconut Battery report

This is crazy...My 16" has less cycles than yours but 10% less Full Charge Capacity. Have you had "Optimized Battery Charging" turned on the whole time? Do you keep it plugged into the charger most of the time? Do you use Aldente?

Hi Spotlighter9,
No Aldente. I've, about half the time, had "optimized battery charging" enabled. The last few weeks it's been plugged in 24/7.

M1 Max Macbook Pro 16" here. I've still got 99% capacity from daily use since March 2022, including plenty of unplugged time.

Wish I could say the same about my iPhone 11 battery, which was replaced earlier this year and now at 92% capacity 🙄

what is the point to this thread? anyone actually buy another MacBook?
To compare battery health between other MBP owners. Most of us aren’t going to go and buy a new MBP just because our battery dropped a few % of health.

Apple will not do anything for batteries unless they’re under 80% in the warranty period.

I’ve been watching my batteries in my MBPs since 2015 and it was fairly common back then to have the health drop to 90% in the first year, then it flatten out over the next 2 years, and then usually sticks round 80-85% past that.

AlDente has allowed some of us to remain at 100% for over a year and more.

If my laptop’s battery dropped to 90% I wouldn’t feel bad, for me personally it would be because it is used heavily. For example, my personal MBP is at 100% (purchased April 2022). But my work MBP (purchased October 2021) is at 93-95% because I use it heavier. It’s a tool meant to be used and batteries get consumed.

I find watching battery capacity to be a fun hobby - I use coconutBattery to record the health of all my devices - and I have since 2015 - I have a very long history in coconutBattery.

MacBooks are great devices - you pay for the hardware with these things - hence why they’re usually a bit more expensive than other brands. I grew up with Windows and switched to Mac in 2015 for my personal computing and work gave me a Mac last year for the first time. :)

Batteries are a lot better than they were in the past. I remember my Dell Latitude D830 - after a year the battery wouldn’t hold a 5 min charge. Now days, even if you don’t use AlDente, you’ll get great battery life after 3 years (most likely). AlDente can help keep the battery north of 90% for much longer especially if you use the laptop in desktop mode (clamshell or always plugged in).

If you use your laptop on battery a lot, AlDente won’t have much advantage but laptop batteries today shine with heavy cycling and handle that really well.

In the end, don’t let a battery % reader prevent you from enjoying your device. It’s a tool meant to be used. Wear means that the tool is providing value to your life. :D

I get AppleCare+ just in case the battery is faulty - Apple will replace it within 3 years if it drops below 80%.

Good luck and looking forward to your health % postings in the near future :D.
