Doesn't work as a wireless modem?!!?!!? Whaaaat?! Every phone with bluetooth, however crappy, lets you do that here.. :(

As "revolutionary" as the iphone may be, its a bit bad when its actually a downgrade from things people have been doing for years. Jeez. However much they improve the core 'phone' functionality, it'd still be nice if it did the things every other handset does. (yes, including picture messaging)

I don't know anyone without a mobile phone (other than pensioners) - none of them seem to have problems using the core "phone" functionality.. It needs *features* or maybe it's offering a solution to a problem that might not even be there.

Oh well, still wont stop it from being wildly successful. Hopefully revision 2 will be more useful (maybe we'll get an nicer model for europe).

yeah, Im tired of ppl treating this thing as a full featured computer, give me a break, with that screen, its unrealistic to use it for all your activity online. whats the point. Its a PHONE.

Tethering isn't a full featured computer ability. It's something that many phones, smartphones and non-smartphones offer.

i dont get why apple doesn't put some of these features in.

they easily can make some of these features happen so why do they not put them in now and wait for software updates.
I understand your plight with the tid bits of lacking features, but this is version 1. I think they focused more on stability and some main features: Mail, Safari, YouTube, etc. I think a lot of these little ones will come with the updates and some of the hardware related ones will be addressed with version 2.

LOL! What a joke.

Popularity yes. Sales no. Sorry again. $500-$600 puts it out of the reach of many many many iPod owners. Its like the popularity of a sports car. I may like x or Y model but there is zero chance of me ever owning one.

hehe, its a PDA (like palm TX=$250)+iPod (30G video=$250)+phone (free anywhere), so it costs $500. :D

Yah a really limited in functionality and software PDA.

Really??? Can only use the 25 preset ringtones??? It can't do what a 40$ phone can do??? Seriously?? I'm still gonna get one though :(

It can only use one ring tone at a time. For example. Some people have just one ringer for all calls. I have one ring tone for my girlfriend, one for family members and everybody else gets the generic one. So that's 3 ring tones at one time. The iphone lacks this capability, but that's easily fixable in a software update.

yeah, i understand, iphone does not have eough functionality as PDA, doesnt offer enough disk space as video ipod, and isn't easy to use as a phone (6 steps to make a call??), nevertherless, it costs exactly same price as a PDA+a video iPod+a phone... interesting

Both of you guys sound like part of the Apple PR team. My Sony Ericsson t610 kind of does more then this phone does. My p990i definitely does more then this phone does. Sorry if we're harping on functionality that's been available on phones for years but you get used to things being made better. The iPhone is a throw back to the Startac. Pretty phone short on stuff I could use. Don't worry Apple I'm still going to buy 1. I'm a very shallow person ;).

its not perfect?

Some people are really picky but they will still end up buying the phone. People need to realize that there is not way to make a perfect product. especially rev. 1. This is apple's first attempt at a phone. And I'm sure most of the reviews are right. Its is an awesome product. but not perfect because nothing is perfect. the lack of features isn't what is keeping me from buying the PHONE. its att&t. I haven't decided if it is worth dropping verizon(which has provided me with excellent reception for 3 or 4 years) for att&t which im not positive about their service.

The iPod was very expensive in the beginning as well. Prices will drop and features will be added. It's running OS X and therefor will be plenty capable to run robust applications in the future. Initially it's limited because it's a first generation, sort of like the iPod.

You apparentely don't know how handy it is, when in an area without WiFi, to be able to tether your phone to your laptop and access the internet. Another thing apple dropped the ball on

Can't you just use the built in Safari browser on the iPhone?

A PDA will let you use 3rd party software. iPhone doesn't. A $100 PDA has more functionality.

Any ordinary phone will allow you to use your own ringtones, iPhone doesn't.

$600 will buy you a very good unlocked smartphone. What do you get for the iPhone? Something thats so unbelievably locked up its almost like a regular $50 phone ( apart from the UI ). No, sorry, a $50 would let you play Java games on it.

The iPhone is a very weak product. As it stands, it won't be successful outside the u.s borders.

To get the most out of the iPhone you've got to pay $59 for unlimited internet data access.

Weak, very weak.

Apple are heading for a fall for non u.s markets until they pull their arrogant head of their arses.

So does 6 steps to make a call mean 6 "button" presses? Or do you have to go through 6 separate screens, or what?

Come on Apple....My phone requires one lousy button press, from whereever I am in the phone, no matter what application, to get to the dial pad. One frickin step, and this is made by Microsoft, the company notorious for unintuitive to use interfaces.

If I used voice dialing (something the iPhone doesn't even have) I can dial any contact with one button push too. Apple, known for some of the best, easy-to-use, user friendly interfaces, really messed this one up

Eh? Thats the whole point.. you use the mobile phone for the internet access on your laptop.. For example, I'll be doing this with a 2.5 year old phone on holiday next week, in a rural area where there is no wifi.

The Macbook has no other way to access the internet outside a wifi zone, so I have no idea what you guys are getting at with a "need a new laptop" stuff, there's nothing old-fashioned about using bluetooth to share the internet between a mobile and a laptop..

Hell, I'd even argue using cell-network PCMCIA(etc) cards is even more old fashioned considering they work in Apple Newtons. This functionality is included in throwaway "free" phones here, so it should be expected in a $400+ one, surely?

Can't you just use the built in Safari browser on the iPhone?

No! Say when I'm typing a paper and I need endnote to gather the reference data....
Or say I'm doing a powerpoint and need to add a picture from the internet.
Or say I need to use a website/program that only is allowed to function on a Windows machine.

While many of you would say just use wifi, the fact is you have to pay substantially in most places in NYC to use wifi and why pay if its for free through your phone to use DUN???? OR many places actually do not have wifi. It is the gain in productivity by having the internet ANYWHERE that is the real benefit of DUN through the phone...I can be on the train and work or at the park or on the can (ok just jk'ing)...but U get the idea:confused:

keyboard in landscape mode seems to be really good... i think safari only has it since if you hit the address bar up top while in landscape mode it would be weird if the keyboard came up the regular way..

I thought the same thing. Also the keyboard is suppose to come up when you click inside a text field.

The only other thing I'm surprised about is the lack of a RSS Feed reader. I figured the safari browser would have had that since it would be the fastest way to get information from sites over the Edge network.

I guess there will be a need for a really nice Feed reader. I was holding off on designing one that looked exactly like Safari's until I found out if that feature exists or not.

I do think that people need to give Apple a break on some of their odd feature requests. This is the first generation of the phone! This is also their first phone ever. The phone will only get better over time.

Record video with software update?

Hey does anybody know if they could add the ability to record video with the camera and add MMS picture, video, and voice texting with software updates, or would that require hardware updates??? Anyone please let me know.

Also does anyone know if it can vibrate and ring at the same time???

I'd say that the ability to connect the phone as a modem to a laptop would be a software function so it could be possible eventually, right?

Also, I think MMS would be added by software, along with voice texting. However, the camera in the iPhone may only be able to capture stills. So, video recording may not be able to be added easily.

Only thing I worry about is what is his definition of a "Weak" speakerphone? I'm hearing impaired and use the speakerphone on my treo pretty much all th time...so how weak is weak?

The Mossberg review said that the speakers were actually pretty decent, so it's obvious this is subjective...

Clearwire could make a killing...

right now. If they would enable their services to work with the iPhone, I'd so be all over it. That would cure the 3G problem for me for the most part. If I could have wifi in most of the places i hang out and only have to deal with the 2.5G whenever i'm in an extreme situation...

man that would be nice....

Clearwire, yoo hoo, are you listening?

i dont get why apple doesn't put some of these features in.

i kinda agree. I don't think this necessarily needs to be a blackberry but some of these are such obvious and easily possible features, it's just a nusance not to include them.

Honestly, it's not the price of the phone holding me back, it's the monthly fee. I plenty of minutes, nights starting at 7, weekends, and unlimited texts for $35 a month - it will cost me almost $80 on iPhone.

I'm sold on the phone itself, the critics can't sway me now, but it's a huge investment for something I tend to throw around and drop just because of what it is.

If your already on a plan, it only costs 20$ for visual voice mail and unlimited data transfer.
