I'm bothered by the number of features missing, that can likely be included with a software update.

For those with earlier model iPods, it was frustrating to see features added to the newer model iPods, but never added to the older ones thru software updates... Podcast speed, search, etc...

Maybe things will be different with a phone in which a two year contract is required, but I feel like Apple will again play the same old tricks.

if you don't see the feature you want today, don't buy.

I do think that people need to give Apple a break on some of their odd feature requests. This is the first generation of the phone! This is also their first phone ever. The phone will only get better over time.

Why should someone give two companies on the fortune 500 a break AT&T #27 and Apple #121 a break? I don't think so when they've dropped the ball on Apple TV now the phone? Apple is really starting to perform like every other dysfunctional company out there. They're getting greedy.

every company is greedy!

on a side note, I hope aria505 gave M$ Zune a break too, :p

Why not have disk mode? So the only way to read a pdf or Word file is to email it to yourself?

Have you ever tried using disk mode on your nano? its the exact same thing. There will be a disk mode. However, this is not a hard disk, its flash memory, so this is much faster.

You apparentely don't know how handy it is, when in an area without WiFi, to be able to tether your phone to your laptop and access the internet. Another thing apple dropped the ball on

Tethering isn't a full featured computer ability. It's something that many phones, smartphones and non-smartphones offer.

This guy just never shuts up with the naysaying. My god, quit all this naysaying about the iphone. I'm no fanboy, i own many apple products, however, please at least see that there are actually good things about the iPhone. You dont need to tether your fone because edge is terrible for tethering. You can't tether a blackjack or a Q, cuz i've owned both. You have a freaking laptop. Pay for the hotspot you are in, and move on with your life... geesh

Don't worry Apple PR department, we're still going to buy it. We're just annoyed that it's going to be a prettier sidekick that's all,

That's generally the idea behind an exclusive contract... That so many people are shocked by this is just amazing.

As for ringtones, remember all those iTunes screenshots that have the Ringtones tab? Okay. Now calm down, people. Breathe into a paper bag. The world isn't about to end.

Well, that's another area of hacking I'm interested in hearing about. Are these magic sim cards? Did apple change the sim slot? Or do they just say that to discourage anyone from trying. Once the hackers get a hold of this phone, then we'll find out whether third-party apps can be loaded and whether one can change service providers.

hey just to inform ya, the main function of business is to maximize profits no matter what. I'm a twenty year old acct student and this is pounded into us from the beginning. Let them earntheir profits, we are also reaping by getting fabulous products. Go bug the three oil companies in the TOP 5 of the fortune 500, they are the ones price gouging and squeezing every dime outta you for a necessity. the iPhone isnt a necessity.

People are saying that certain features or lack thereof are turning them off, and true there are things that make me say why did they do this or not do that, but at the end of the day Apple made a really good product that will appeal to a certain market segment willing to pay a premium for a touchscreen iPod and phone combo that also has email and web capabilities and some other stuff too. Instead of focusing on all the great things about it people continue to complain that it isn't perfect for their use based on x and y criteria. No one makes anything perfect, otherwise this product wouldn't have come out to begin with. You can't please all the people all the time, just some of the people a good deal of the time which is what Apple was aiming for and most likely seemingly hit.

I still contend that I am waiting for rev. B though that may change. I would like 12 or 16GB instead of 8 and some other enhancements from round 1. I would also like to hold one myself, experience the touchscreen, see if it really takes "strong" pushes, etc, hear reviews on the call quality before making a decision to get one earlier than I plan on.

But for me it won't be hard to spend $600 on a nice phone that I will take care of rather than throw around for two reasons. a. I already own a lot of nice things, many of which are Apple made, that I keep a habit of not abusing, and b. I spent more on my current phone than on the iPhone, so it is actually a step down in price and up in features. My current phone is well made and could be called a luxury type status symbol or something. It is elegant and stylish not dropping it or throwing it around so it still looks good is a habit I will be happy to keep with my iPhone, when I choose to get one.

Negative vote for TV-out, laptop modem, and disk use being missing. (I'm sure the latter will come.)

Positive vote for the landscape keyboard! Currently Safari is the only text app that does ANYTHING in landscape, but if SMS, Maps and Mail were updated to allow landscape, then it seems the keyboard is ready-to-go.

I've always planned to wait for ver B. There's nothing specific I NEED to wait for except 16 GB+ (and disk mode), but whatever else may be added by the time I buy will be welcome too! GPS, 3G, whatever's coming.

Yes, you can tether with Windows Mobile. I've done it several times. After googling it, it looks like if there's any reason it didn't work for you is because your carrier locked it down, but it could be done with the proper drivers. Slow, but better than nothing. And what if I'm not in a hotspot? geesh.

Yes the you are correct it's the very reason why I don't own a car. Oh yeah i forgot. The Sidekick actually does more then the iPhone.

Tethering isn't a full featured computer ability. It's something that many phones, smartphones and non-smartphones offer.

Did anyone really expect you would get tethering at $20 unlimited / month. Most phone companies discourage this either in their contracts or technically by disallowing it over bluetooth and usb. They charge $60 to $80 per month for laptop wireless service. Why would anyone pay that if they could just do it over their phone (partly cause they don't know, like with SprintPCS I know, but Sprint would do more to stop it if more figured it out).

These little disappointments are really adding up. Think Secret is also reporting that events added to the iPhone can only sync to one iCal calendar. Mossberg's mention that Address Book groups cannot be used for email distribution lists was also a real bummer.

I was getting used to the idea of no 3G, but all of these silly software limitations are starting to take their toll on my eagerness (and perhaps willingness) to pay a $200 ETF to Sprint and plunk down $600 for the phone.

I'm starting to feel that all these iPhone bashers are comparable to some Windows fanboy going onto the Mac forums and saying that Mac's suck. You don't see topics on the Macbook Pro forum about how much better a Dell laptop is. There shouldn't be posts here about how much better other phones are. It's about discussing the iPhone. Discussing the problems is good, but posts bashing and talking about how Sidekicks are so much more functional should be deleted IMO.

I stand corrected,

From a posting @ Think Secret:

"As has been previously disclosed, the iPhone's SIM card tray is located at the very top of the device and can be removed using a paper clip. iPhone owners will be able to use any AT&T SIM card in the tray, though the card will need to be activated through iTunes before using. Apple will recommend that customers use the SIM card that will ship with the iPhone."

well .. does anyone know if i can switch back and forth between my razr v3xx and iphone? i sometimes use it as a modem when i am out at the beach house, and i dont want to lose that. i do hope i will be able to switch out sim cards if need be.

I don't care about the Zune. I haven't the slightest idea of what it lacks because I don't waste my time worrying about the downfall of things that I'm not going to buy.

Apple could have waited another year to release the iPhone with all these features, or they could release it now and update it with software updates (we will see if they truly release many updates). Or they could just write crappy software that has a ton of features which non of them are actually user friendly like most of the other phones out there.

If you want the phone to support those features then wait a year or two and then buy it or go buy another phone that does have it now. You have plenty of phones to choose from. I'm going to wait.

Actually you CAN tether both those phones, I googled both and came up with positive results, walkthroughs etc. Not complicated.

The speed isnt an issue - a lot of people use this functionality. Slow internet is better than no internet! Nobody is suggesting it's their main channel for internet access, or even that they'd use it when they're in a hotspot. It's just a very useful convenience when there aren't alternatives.. (ie, most places, as wifi isnt a given outside of cities)

Now people need an iphone AND another phone if they want mobile internet access on a lot of modern laptops. This is a silly omission to a lot of people.

And saying negative things about the iphone doesnt make people iphone haters.. The phone brings a lot of good things to the table, it just forgot to bring a lot of things too.

edit: lol, too slow!

I can tether for $20/mo (and without my carrier actually giving a damn), so yes, I really did expect AT&T to offer the same.

I'm curious to know if there are other keyboard layouts offered on the iPhone. I use the Dvorak layout and wonder if that is available. It would certainly be very easy to implement. Anyone know?

Listen, I own many apple products including to Apple TV's which I felt Apple dropped the ball on feature-wise. Having owned mobile phones as early as 1994 I know what an revolutionary product is. This phone isn't that product. It is very pretty but that is pretty much it. I will buy the phone. My junk drawer grows in a collection of phones acquired and tossed aside for the next new thing. I'm sure this phone will eventually join that collection as well. So all I'm saying is I'm disappointed by this news that's all. I expected more from Apple. Can't we expect more from a company like Apple? If the phone was 300 bucks then yeah they'd be right on the mark.
