It's a half deal breaker for me. I'm just kind of used to being able to do that even though I technically don't use it that often. I just like having the option to...

Is there a cheapo 3G phone I could purchase maybe? One under $75 that supports tethering?

Can't you just buy a card for your laptop to accomplish the same thing in a more direct fashion?

Well, seeing as how I have a Macbook and don't have a laptop card slot...

Anyway, I don't really NEED the option to tether but like I said, it's nice to have. Just a feature I'm used to. But I'll probably still buy an iPhone... I just like complaining about it :p.

i dont get why apple doesn't put some of these features in.

they easily can make some of these features happen so why do they not put them in now and wait for software updates.

Even the easiest software change requires time for implementation / testing. They had to release the iPhone in June or Apple's stock would crash which is why the iPhone additions are coming later.

No video out to tv? I presume they're referring to the headphone plug. If it doesn't do video out through the dock, then I'll be annoyed.

And no disk-mount is annoying too. I assume both of these can be fixed with software.

Enough of these critic reviews. They are all envious because they know that the iPhone is truly a revolutionary phone and they just try to make it look bad. They want one but can't get one.

The iPhone is going to be greater than the iPod in popularity, I am predicting.

Do you even know who David Pogue is?

He's written more about Apple and the wonderful things that Apple has done to improve computing for the masses than .... Words fail me.

No Blue-Fi? No disk mode? I can't even personalize it with my own custom ringers?!

Oh good lord, Apple. I fear the backlash.

iPhone can't be used as a wireless modem for your laptop? omg honey, 1998 is that way *points*... if someone needs a wifi phone for their laptop, they should really consider buying a new laptop instead of the iPhone...

It's not WiFi we want the phone for (jackass), it's a EDGE (or EV-DO or what have you.) For my line of work, I'm generally in other people's facilities all the time. I need to be able to use my computer there. They're not going to let me on their corporate WAN, or there may be no WAN there at all. I'm not within WiFi shot of Starbucks. Or, I'm in the airport every other day for 10 minutes or 20 minutes. I'm not going to pay the $7.95 for 24 hours of access. My Nokia 6133 on T-Mobile does this for my MacBookPro just fine. Having only my iPhone (without ssh) online won't do me any good.

My Nokia 6133 also lets me use Bluetooth to toss up a ringtone (albeit in wma and not mp3). It lets me iSync wirelessly too. Of course it lets me send MMS as well. Oh and it does voice memos and voice dialling.

My god machine would be the iPhone + those items + full open OS -- gotta have flash, gotta get to the command line. As it is, well maybe an iPhone can replace my Palm T3 and my 3G iPod, but not my phone.

The lack of 3G and the inability to use as a modem for my laptop are the only 2 things that will prevent me from buying one. Right now I get pretty good BT-DUN speeds from the EVDO network and will the iPhone's WIFI is great it sucks that almost everywhere in manhattan there is NO free wifi :(
Also why does the keyboard not work in landscape mode for anything else...I feel sorry for the acromegalics out there lol :)

Um there's a TON of free WiFi in Manhattan...

On Sprint you can probably get a free phone for tethering (via bluetooth) and just get the cheapest vision plan. You'll have to buy a usb cable online though (not from Sprint).

I'm bothered by the number of features missing, that can likely be included with a software update.

For those with earlier model iPods, it was frustrating to see features added to the newer model iPods, but never added to the older ones thru software updates... Podcast speed, search, etc...

Maybe things will be different with a phone in which a two year contract is required, but I feel like Apple will again play the same old tricks.

if you don't see the feature you want today, don't buy.

boom...that is the god's honest truth right there. Nothing will change, My ipod video can't do text based searches but the next gen nano that came out 6 months later can. They couldn't add that in a software update? It's never good to buy first gen...ESPECIALLY IN A TWO YEAR CONTRACT. However, if you got money to burn like a lot of iphone buyers, you will probably just by the new improved model when it comes out. You have to pay retail for it anyway.

Honestly, it's not the price of the phone holding me back, it's the monthly fee. I plenty of minutes, nights starting at 7, weekends, and unlimited texts for $35 a month - it will cost me almost $80 on iPhone.

I'm sold on the phone itself, the critics can't sway me now, but it's a huge investment for something I tend to throw around and drop just because of what it is.

If you're with ATT you can keep your current plan and pay just $20 more for data, assuming that you aren't already paying something for data. If you're not wih ATT, just wait a few weeks for the iPhone hype to die down a bit, and let the ATT Customer service people get some sleep. Give them a call and say, "Hey this is my deal on Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile. I'll switch to ATT if you match this plan/pricepoint."

Something tells me they won't turn you down...:)

Upcoming Features

I think Apple left out some features on purpose just to show how easy adding new functionality is going to be....another great marketing move if you ask me.

This is version 1

My view of the bottom line is -> The iPhone will lead (in units sold) a new era for mobile devices because Apple created a phenomenal platform built upon a solid OS and a groundbreaking user interface.

Naysayers please not forget that this is version 1 of iPhone's software, we'll see significant updates in a relatively short time. Remember early on with os x - there were lots of updates quickly.

People will love getting their phone upgraded without having to wait for the typical multiyear contract hardware upgrade. The competition will have an awful hard time catching apple software engineers building upon the iPhone's awesome hardware/software platform.

Complain all you like but the bottom line here is the game has changed (like the ipod did for music players) and apple leads the game.

hey just to inform ya, the main function of business is to maximize profits no matter what. I'm a twenty year old acct student and this is pounded into us from the beginning. Let them earntheir profits, we are also reaping by getting fabulous products. Go bug the three oil companies in the TOP 5 of the fortune 500, they are the ones price gouging and squeezing every dime outta you for a necessity. the iPhone isnt a necessity.

Well, your post was very close to the truth. You are wrong about the big oil companies, just look at the nubmers (as an accountant I'm sure you'd agree) like profit margin. Big oil around 10% profit margin. Now they are huge companies that do A LOT of business, so 10% adds up. But for pure greed and monopoly pricing power you can't beat good old Microsoft,28% profit margin, or almost 3x the big oil profit margin. Talk about greed! And they have a virtual monopoly on the market. Alas still their stock has gone no where in the last 5 years, even with Vista. I guess it must be all the cutting edge products like the $10,000 coffee table computers...:)

What?

Does this look like a stock about to "crash" Their earnings are accelerating, which I'm pretty sure any flunky stockbroker would tell you is a good thing. Oh, and up 1000% in the last 5 years, again that's a good thing. They are selling more online songs, more ipods, more laptops, more eveything. Simply making more money each year, that's why the stock's going up. It did 1,000%
in 5 years without the iPhone, thank you.

Just look at it compared to MSFT.

Yeah, I'm sure the critics are envious because they invent lots of phones.

I'm an Apple fan. I love Apple.

I think the iPhone is a huge dud. For one, it's on a crummy network. AT&T stinks. There are connectivity issues and, of course, it's not CDMA. I'd take another smartphone over EVDO, thank you very much.

Second, the people that this is aimed at used there phones all day. Battery life is good, but I know a lot of people who have two or three batteries that they switch out in their phones every day. Can't do that with iPhone.

Third, the expense is huge. You can get an equally as capable phone for much, much cheaper on a superior network.

The good news is that durability does not appear to be a concern, though I'd guess that it was one on prototypes since Apple decided to use glass instead of plastic.

There will be a big push initially by technogeeks that can't control their impulses. The real test will be down the line when the problems start to become well known. It's not a money loser, but Apple's not going to dominate like they thought and AT&T will regret getting in bed with a company like Apple that makes too many demands.

I know people at Verizon and, as reported, they were offered the iPhone first. Without Apple's demands they would have been interested, but their research indicates that this thing won't make a dent long term in the market. That's one reason why they weren't interested at all. I think AT&T will try to find a way to back out of carrying the iPhone within a year and Apple will be left with a poorly executed product that doesn't address the needs of the market.

AppleTV and iPhone - two horrible ideas with poor execution. I hope it doesn't bleed into the iPod and Mac lineups.

David Pogue is mostly a Apple xxx kisser, he is kindest to apple among all non-apple sponsored commentators.

I have read a lot of his stuff, and more recently seen most of his video reviews on the nytimes. Though he is an apple user, I think he is pretty fair in his reviews - apple and non apple products.

He doesn't usually pan any product - just discusses the pros and cons in non geek speak. Then lets the reader decide.

If you watched the review on the iphone, especially towards the end of the video. All the coworkers want one, then he mentions the caveats of the iphone, and they leave one by one.

The only guy left, licks the phone because he is obviously enamored with all things apple.

Well, there it is folks. My one qualm about the iPhone has been quashed (sorry for all the Q's). I thought to myself that the keyboard would work a lot better if you could use it in landscape mode, and I see now that it's possible. I am thoroughly impressed.

If only they made a 30GB model sans cell phone capabilities. Picture it, an iPod with everything iPhone has, minus the phone. I could connect to an open network and use Google maps (maybe even cache it in the case of a trip). It'd be even cooler if I could write my emails and queue them for sending once I walk into a wifi area...

I can dream, can't I?

You better hope the iPhone is successful, at least for Apple's sake. As I understand it, Steve Jobs is practically betting the entire company on the success of iPhone. They have something like $20 billion invested in it.

Where do people get this numbers? whatever.

The phone could bomb - sell two of 'em and apple would take a short term hit, but be fine in the long run.

Has it occurred to anyone that apple doesn't want to release bloated devices? The'll add some things over software update in a staggered fashion, to add function while people get used to it. Look at how simple the "simple" iApps were when launched and what they can do now. It's all about getting people used to things, then building from there.

I don't know that they're holding back just so people can get used to things before they release better... I think it's more a thing of ironing out the OS that lies underneath it all first... Once the OS is done (pretty much done now) then all these updates / features can be worked on.

You might have seen by now, but even before release, there's a software update... An RSS reader.
