I double agree stop nit picking! Software updates will address many of these problems.

What you really mean is
"Software updates *MAY* address many of these problems".

Nit picking to you maybe, but I'm very sure that the missing functionality are important to other people who expect it on a $500 / $600 phone.

Apple are definitely going for style over substance.

I find it hard to believe that QWERTY is the best keyboard for a device this size. Apple is not in a position where they have to choose one of the other. They should also have a second virtual keyboard (ala Frogpad) and when users get comfortable with QWERTY they should have the option of something with bigger, more frequently used keys.

I think somebody's mad that they cant get it in canada...

Yawn! (-_-)

So how is this related to my new iPod or iMac?

Were is the rest of Apple Inc... the part that is actually innovative and functional and accessible for everyone?

Not long ago people were complaining that there were too many stories about the iPod and that people wanted to here more rumors about computers.

There is a lot of talk about the iPhone because it is being released tomorrow. Apple wouldn't update to release a new computer anytime between WWDC and probably a month from now as it will get lost in all of the iPhone hype. Afterall it is a completely new product from apple and will hopefully develop and take a good sized slice of the phone market share, apple need to promote a new product.

Pogue actually doesn't know what the phone is and isn't capable of. Apple will likely push a software update at 6p eastern to iTunes that enables features. These features will likely be disabled unless you have an iPhone and won't even show up. Also, the iPhones that the reviewers have got are likely not the full blown iPhones that will be sold to the public. Apple likes to keep a few features secret until the zero hour, and with a software based device, this is easy. Look for at least one or two more surprise features. My money's on one of them being music ringtones. I can't wait to put the Doobie Brothers' China Grove on there.

LOL.

You think that criticism is due to people inability to buy the iPhone? Rather than concrete reasons to why the iPhone is lacking, given the very high price?

I wouldn't buy a $600 phone that is -
- lacking in so many basic features
- still locked to one network
- no 3rd party applications

Why would I want to replace my current phone, which in my opinion , smokes the iPhone?

You must be mistaken. No criticism of the iPhone is allowed, and criticizing it clearly shows jealousy. Did you get the memo?

There's a lot of presumptions in there :)

Regarding rotation and orientation

landscape_300.jpg

I'm surprised no one caught this by now...

Did you notice that he had the screen turned clockwise 90 degrees to get to landscape mode?

I was always wondering if the rotation only worked as previously shown on every video out there... counter-clockwise.

But, based on the picture, it appears that the Sleep/Wake button is on the right and the volume rocker switch is on the top, which means that the accelerometer works in either direction.

Doesn't anybody else think, that Apple has gone a bit too far with the money sucking this time??? I mean, don't get me wrong, the phone looks great, but the fact that they are:

1ST- charging you $600 on top of making you sign a 2 year contract.
2nd- No VOIP, so AT&T doesn't get p£$% off over you not making enough calls. Or IM client so you keep texting.
3rd- Unable to set your own mp3's as ring tones so they can SELL you ring tones.
4TH- Locked.
5th- No proper third party support, so if anyone is going to sell software for it, its going to be apple. (don't give me quality control BS, because if that was the real problem all they'd need to do, is the the devs to pass the apps through apple's quality control before release)

But I guess the market shall decide. I hope there aren't enough apple zealots out there for this potentially awesome product to be succesfull in its current form(and conditions to own)...

There's a lot of presumptions in there :)

I'm just trying to add perspective. People are also assuming that the features on the iPhones that have been given to reviewers are all the features that will be on the iPhone that is released, and that simply isn't likely to be the case.

I saw a post on here about making the home screen switch to a phone when turned to landscape mode. BEST IDEA I'VE HEARD!!!

Here's what I'm thinking:
You turn to landscape mode and the center section becomes the keypad (press one number for speed dialing just like on every other phone). Maybe throw in a button for voice dialing (less important). On the left you have a section with your most recently dialed calls, with most recently received calls on the other side.

If Apple implemented this, suddenly almost every call you want to make is a single button push away. If it's going to be a phone, make it work for actual phone use!!!

I like this idea a lot

IMO, your points are very valid.

However, when it comes to point 3, I think we are going to have to wait until Friday and iTunes 7.3 to see whether Apple will let you freely load new ring phones on to the iphone via iTunes.

You are absolutely right, I just went by the rumours regarding the itunes tab for ring tones...

It can only use one ring tone at a time. For example. Some people have just one ringer for all calls. I have one ring tone for my girlfriend, one for family members and everybody else gets the generic one. So that's 3 ring tones at one time. The iphone lacks this capability, but that's easily fixable in a software update.

they better fix/update that.

Why can't you get through your thick skull the fact that the iPhone isn't perfect and not everyone thinks its the best phone out there?

No one said it was perfect but, for me, it blows away any other phone I have seen and I don't have to carry my BB and iPod to friggin lunch everyday!

Cheers.

I happen to find the multi-ringtone feature annoying. There's nothign worse than hearing some cheerleader in a restaraunt's phone go off five times with five different poor quality hip hop songs.

LOL.

you forgot these:
- easily stolen
- easily breakable
- unable to change battery yourself
- the amish don't use phones

Surely only one of these points is specific to the iPhone.

Yeah, we amish can't use phones. Few people know we have an addiction to 900 numbers.

(but we can use computers, no 900 numbers to worry about).

Evil will always triumph because good is dumb.
