Remember what he said...many "No's" are really just, "Not Yet." This seems to be a simple software upgrade...as well has the Landscape keyboard in other modes besides the internet.

Come on... a feature that has been in every phone and every Palm for 11 years, built into their calendar and their new Mail application and they totally left it out?

It is beyond stupid.

And what about those times when you've just gone into a power meeting with the boss and as you walk through the door you have just remembered that you forgot to take the chewing gum out of your mouth.

If only Apple had put a small slot in the iPhone for these sorts of everyday occurrences.

A PDA will let you use 3rd party software. iPhone doesn't. A $100 PDA has more functionality.

Any ordinary phone will allow you to use your own ringtones, iPhone doesn't.

$600 will buy you a very good unlocked smartphone. What do you get for the iPhone? Something thats so unbelievably locked up its almost like a regular $50 phone ( apart from the UI ). No, sorry, a $50 would let you play Java games on it.

The iPhone is a very weak product. As it stands, it won't be successful outside the u.s borders.

To get the most out of the iPhone you've got to pay $59 for unlimited internet data access.

Weak, very weak.

Apple are heading for a fall for non u.s markets until they pull their arrogant head of their arses.

what ppl don't seem to get here is the fact that barely anyone uses half of their phone's functions. It's not about what thee geeks will be doing with it, but what the general public wants to do, and they want an easy to use phone with cool functions, not an impossible to use, overloaded with crap functions one.
It doesn't matter if you CAN do it, but if you actually DO it.
My nokia 6280 smartphone has a million of features, but what do I use? right, address book, calendar, alarm clock, sms and once in a month I might take a picture with it's 2 mp cam.
I've used MMS like 5 times in the past 5 years, so I could live without it, I've used it as a 3g HDSPA Modem twice (once to test it, and one more time just to show off), which is pointless because it just costs too much.
The ringtone issue is a non-issue because you WILL be able to set different ringtones over itunes (and honestly, I don't need 53 different ringtones for 53 different ppl, it's just annoying) about the other stuff ppl are banging on, I have never had to replace my battery, and as stated in the Mossberg review, it will get you through the day, no matter what you do with it. Someone talked about removeable storage, what for?! you 8 gb that's PLENTY of space, you don'T have to carry around your whole itunes library at once, you can't listen to everything and most ppl never do that anyway.
I agree that the lack of 3G is an issue (which will be adressed for the european launch, I am sure)
You call 59$ for 450 minutes and unlimited data much? it's nothing, I pay 45€ (which is about the same) for 450 minutes without the data.
And java games...come on please, these are just annoying (and I am quite sure apple will add games in the feature, just as they did with the iPod)
And as far as an 100$ PDA is concerned, they just simply suck, they are slow, you need to install tons of 3rd party apps to get some functionality out of it, and they are usually huge. I have one, and it makes me wanna throw it out of the window on regular bases.
I am quite confident that apple will update things through software update, and it appears they are already preparing for this, see the rss feeder.

stop bashing it, if you don't like it, don't buy it, but stop bashing it for lacking things that 90% of the ppl won't use anyway.

Enough of these critic reviews. They are all envious because they know that the iPhone is truly a revolutionary phone and they just try to make it look bad. They want one but can't get one.

The iPhone is going to be greater than the iPod in popularity, I am predicting.

The problem here is not whether the Iphone works as a phone, it is the extras that make a phone truly useful.

I use my phone on the Evdo network through Sprint, they have the fastest data wireless connection, without that functionality the phone to me is useless. I was on the Sprint wireless yesterday for over 2 hours, there was no network where I was.

So th Iphone is an Ipod, whoopy, you can tap on the screen, touch screen is not new, it does NOT live up to the phone standards of today. The Iphone is a novelty that will go away like the hoola hoop or the pet rock.

It doesn't matter if you CAN do it, but if you actually DO it.

Except that everyone uses a different half of those features. Having all those features makes the phone appeal to a much wider part of the market.

I've used MMS like 5 times in the past 5 years,

Case and point. I use MMS loads

Agreed. But I've got loads of mates who find it very useful.

It's a piece of mind thing. If you've ever had a mobile's battery go flakey on you, you appreciate being able to buy a new one and replace it easily.

Someone talked about removeable storage, what for?! you 8 gb that's PLENTY of space, you don'T have to carry around your whole itunes library at once, you can't listen to everything and most ppl never do that anyway.
Tottally agree with you on this one tho!

Answers to common questions:
- Speakerphone / Vibrate are weak
- No other company’s SIM card works in the iPhone.
- No voice memos, voice dialing or call recording
- Can only use one of 25 preset ringtones
- iPhone can't be used as a wireless modem for your laptop

Doesn't meet the basic requirements yet for a phone, not sure what all the fuss is about. Now if you wanted an up-to-date Newton with limited phone functionality and limited iPod functionality (8GB fills up fast my friends), then by all means validate this weak attempt at the killer app comm device.

I double agree stop nit picking! Software updates will address many of these problems.

It is the people who "nitpick" (I would say 'point out flaws') that get Apple to add additional functionality down the road.

Everyone who just claims something they have never used is "awesome" certainly doesn't drive Apple to do anything more awesome.

Eh? Thats the whole point.. you use the mobile phone for the internet access on your laptop.. For example, I'll be doing this with a 2.5 year old phone on holiday next week, in a rural area where there is no wifi.

The Macbook has no other way to access the internet outside a wifi zone, so I have no idea what you guys are getting at with a "need a new laptop" stuff, there's nothing old-fashioned about using bluetooth to share the internet between a mobile and a laptop..

Hell, I'd even argue using cell-network PCMCIA(etc) cards is even more old fashioned considering they work in Apple Newtons. This functionality is included in throwaway "free" phones here, so it should be expected in a $400+ one, surely?

For a Macbook, you could easily purchase a USB cellular air card, but I can definitely see why it would be nice not to pay for 2 data plans.

People who act like the missing 3G is a big deal obviously don't use 3G on daily.

My job is testing networks like this. 3G networks are just as slow as EDGE for loading pages. All 3G networks have huge latency, around 800ms. Even with Verizon EV-DO expresscard which I use it's still slow even though it's considered broadband.

Sure once a download starts it gets up to 50-300k/sec but then when are you going to be downloading large 500MB files on your iPhone? It's not like you can move them to your computer.

It's the latency. If the phone did have 3G you would see it taking just as long to load the damn page. because each request to the webserver is another route that has 800ms ping times

Trust me even the fastest "3G" networks make browsing web pages annoying as hell.

It's really a mute point. So people stop, because 2G, 3G, EV-DO your page would still load slow.

Anyone who actually has EV-DO "broadband" knows what I'm talking about.

Seriously for email and pulling up pages it will be fine.

They won't listen but you are right.
Not to mention I have yet to see a 3G phone without battery issues.

Found this little article that may be a little enlightening:

Edge vs EVDO, 3G, WiFi

Don't forget GPS. I have a Blackberry 8800 with Cingular and can use TeleNav services yet my girlfriend bought the new VZN WORLD PHONE (Same Blackberry just VZN version) and it is so worldly that they disabled the BUILT IN GPS.

I would be pi$$ed.

any nokia smartphone...
mine lasts at least 2 days, usually 3 on 3G (just calls though, no data)

Not to mention I have yet to see a 3G phone without battery issues.

My SE K800 lasts about 3 days, even when I check emails (once a day) and RSS feeds (4 times a day) send text messages and make phone calls.

It is technically possible that the chipset in the iPhone right now is 3G capable but not activated.

Surely though it would have had to been declared in the FCC statements and testing.

Yes, the T-Mobile Wing (HTC P4350) is obviously perfect....

- Interface is sluggish. Try to open a few apps at once and the thing slows to a crawl. As a multitasking device, this is unacceptable.

- No 3G

- No GPS

- Relatively heavy compared to competitors.

- Screen size is only 240 x 320, not as expansive as competitors like the N95 or iPhone. Screen can be difficult to read in direct sunlight.

- Noticeable delay when switching from portrait to landscape modes. Again, sluggishness is pervasive in the UI.

- Only 40 MB of on board memory. Juggling mSD cards is mandatory if you plan to have any significant media on this thing.

- Video playback begins to drop frames at anything more that 350kbps.

- Only Bluetooth 1.2

- Only 3 days of standby time.

- No standard 3.5 mm headphone jack. WTF.

- And this doesn't include problems inherent to Windows Mobile 6 itself...

Wow yg17, could it be that (gasp) no phone is perfect for everybody? OMG! What the hell is your point with all your bitching? Pointing out a flaw once is informative, but 300 times over and over is just pathetic.
And where did I say my phone was perfect? How about you shut up and stop putting words in my mouth? I know my phone's shortcomings, but they certainly aren't as bad as the iPhone

The REAL feature EVERYBODY should be focused on

I saw a post on here about making the home screen switch to a phone when turned to landscape mode. BEST IDEA I'VE HEARD!!!

Here's what I'm thinking:
You turn to landscape mode and the center section becomes the keypad (press one number for speed dialing just like on every other phone). Maybe throw in a button for voice dialing (less important). On the left you have a section with your most recently dialed calls, with most recently received calls on the other side.

If Apple implemented this, suddenly almost every call you want to make is a single button push away. If it's going to be a phone, make it work for actual phone use!!!

It is the people who "nitpick" (I would say 'point out flaws') that get Apple to add additional functionality down the road.

Everyone who just claims something they have never used is "awesome" certainly doesn't drive Apple to do anything more awesome.

Definitely, whats wrong with asking company to make their products better? Some ppl getting used to defending apple so much, they couldn't realize the simply facts of this world.

Without criticism, ppl got no improvement from apple, nada! and guess what, instead of being realistic, objective, and little bit grateful, some ppl are just MAD, unbelievable. money is helpful to apple, but that doesn't mean criticisms are any less helpful. Apple didn't re-write their OS because fanboys' praise of OS classic. and it didn't release safari 3.0.2 because fanboys love 3.0.

BE REAL.

draw a picture, send to apple, see if u will see it in next rev(if hardware change is needed) or software's SP1.

Next great idea for apple: iMac w/touch screen & phone software!

I'd like to see a multi-touch screen iMac w/all the phone software found in the iPhone. imagine dialing the phone with a few taps on your monitor? Conference video phone calls, etc. would be hot.

I am betting that future iPhones will have video conferencing built in... with a tiny iSight camera just for that purpose.
