Sorry if this is an obvious question, but how does everyone get these custom watch faces?

I'd like to try adding some of these but I don't know how.

Thanks for your help.

The photos app on the Apple Watch, will allow you to use a picture as a watch face. Just open the Photos app and force press the photo you want as the face and press the Create Watch Face. It will then use the picture as the face with a digital clock.

Yup.

Here's the trick, though: sometimes the Watch's Photos app crops the image where you don't want it to crop. Take this example:

This is the only way I can get this pic to display on the AW without any prior editing. Here it is grouped with other images:

What you can't see is that this is taken from a painting of the Rebel base on Yavin IV. To get the guard post in the pic on the watch, I'll need to edit it myself.

What people sometimes discover is, it's sometimes difficult to use their favorite photo as a clearly legible watch face, even with a simple digital display in the corner.

A followup:

You have a handy-dandy photo editor called Photos already on your iPhone. Here, I'm just editing the pic I showed in the previous post, and it automatically updated on the Watch as the edited version. It's really just three steps, with the key being making the first selection (second screenshot) "portrait" instead of "landscape". Then, the 4:5 crop will give the exact aspect ratio for the AW.

To illustrate my other point about legibility, here's a cool image of Darth Vader (also found at macdesktops.com like the Yavin IV artwork) --

…but it's kinda bad as a watch background:

Just to be snarky…

If someone asks you, "Can you play Angry Birds on it?" put up one of these and respond, "No, it would be stupid. Would you?"

Or when someone complains that the watch can't do as much as the phone, remind them that the phone can't run Logic Pro either.

Can you flip the direction of the vader from facing right to facing left, that way the time wouldn't write over the design? As I recall when I played with the photo option the time's position was constant, but might be remembering wrong.

Not in the Photos app, but I thought about it, and yeah, it'd look better.

Stealing these from the H. Moser Swiss Alp watch, which itself is copying the Apple Watch and being sold as a limited edition:
https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/t...watch-a-not-so-subtle-jab-at-the-apple-watch/

(I'm pretty sure Moser is a solid, reputable watchmaker, but can you imagine unscrupulous tech copycats catching wind of the Watch design prior to Oct 2014? This is why Apple doesn't reveal jack s***t about upcoming products.)
