Gee no offense to anyone, but this thread isn't making me want to run out and buy an 8/8+. One of the reasons I wanted to upgrade to an iPX is for the camera, but now I'm not so sure...

Then your computer is broken because my pictures still looks damn awesome on my computer.
And you would be right, that's adorable! But, I notice that all of the fine hair detail to its ears has been removed by the Portrait Mode being applied. It doesn't do very well in the regard, eventually they will get the masking right, I hope!
Absolutely! But don't say that too loud around here, you'll get attacked for criticising an Apple feature! You’re almost never ever going to get each and every tiny little stray hair detail perfectly in portrait mode. You can not compare something done with optics vs something done in software. Optics will always win.
Here’s an example I took with a 5d Mark IV and a 85mm f/1.2 (@ f/1.2)View attachment 725725
A real lens will get that super fine detail of stray hairs (whiskers in this case) because it’s optically done, it can resolve that kind of detail, it doesn’t rely on masking to blur, it relies on physics of a lens, focal plains, distance to subject and aperture. iOS portrait mode doesn’t. It’s taking a best guess to mimmick it.

My preference will always be my DSLR, then a third party app to manually control the camera on the 8+ and record the images in RAW.
Have to agree with you, for the 99% they will never even notice the poor masking!I was one who went back n forth with you on this.
My point is. Portrait Mode, while will never be as good, it does an pretty amazing job
