Time to bump this thread up.

We are heading to NYC for business next week and the idea sparked in my head that I could be doing some DSLR video while there... so I went shopping.

Very quick (and not very good) shot of my gear:
Nikon D3
70-200mm f/2.8 VR
17-35mm f/2.8
2x SB-600
SB-800

not pictured (because I had to use it to take the picture lol)
Nikon D700
50mm f/1.8
sd76670.jpg

That rusty thing on the other side of my monitor is a fan that's older than I am; it is the most powerful fan I've ever seen. Metal blades and all that. They just don't make em like they used to!

The canon 5D, - what nikon camera could you compare it too?

Is it better than the D90? I have a D40 at the moment but I'm really wanting to upgrade. Could any of you guys tell me if Canon/Nikon are planning new things in the coming half year or do they have their line up set??

Thanks. Also, Could you guys maybe recommend some lenses/accessories to go with the camera of your suggestion.

Cheers, Mint.

The D700 is the Nikon equivalent. It doesn't shoot video and is lower resolution, but the noise handling and level of detail are epic.

You definitely should get a 50mm prime no matter what; they're dirt cheap and very nice lenses to have, both Canon's and Nikon's.

That said, there will be a successor/replacement to the D700 soon. Check http://nikonrumors.com/ for any news about that.

The only competitor is the D700, but the D700 is inferior in many regards, though an update is rumoured. I would wait for the replacement.

I recently acquired some film camera equipment as shown in my first picture. Both are Zenit cameras but other than that I know nothing about them. So far they are just ornaments sitting in my room :)

And of course, my recently purchased Kodak Easyshare Z950 which I can't picture without borrowing another camera.. So I just attached a picture from Google Images. Anybody know anything about the film cameras?

Updates

As this thread is about gear and more gear, I don't feel as bad flaunting. :p

So I ended up selling all my Nikon gear and did the switch to Canon. The 5DmkII was recently let go for some new toys. First, there was the epic EOS-1v HS, which I got for a stunningly low $600. Then there was:

markIV1.jpg

I also scored one of the rare Hermes Edition Leica M7s, incl. the silver chrome aluminum 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M.

HermesM7.jpg

And last, but certainly not least, my new favorite camera of them all.

I fu**ing adore the marvelous FF RF.

70-200/2.8L IS

bittersweet

Recently made the switch from Nikon D80 and adopted the MFT system with Panasonic GF1. At this point in my life, having to pay for student loans and my knee surgery, it made sense financially to "downgrade."

4408456534_5c0f0eebd6.jpg

When my lenses and the camera left my hands, I felt a strange emptiness. Attachment to the camera over the years, I suppose. It has been to many places with me. But I was relieved the 18-200mm VR II fell into the hands of my friends. Over the years, I owned and sold:
  • Nikon D80
  • Nikon 18-135mm kit lens
  • Nikon 50mm f/1.8
  • Nikon 18-200mm VR II
  • Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro
  • Tokina 12-24mm f/4 Wide Angle

4407689339_a59c1d7a49.jpg

I feel like I could really like this camera after having owned it for a month. The grip is actually what I'm still not used to. Just doesn't fit my hands like a DSLR. But I like its portability. Looking forward to adding the 7-14mm lens somewhere in the future. Meanwhile, I'll try to improve the photographer side of the relationship.

Can anybody recommend a good tripod for the Canon 5DMk2? Much appreciated.

Edit: Also, I will be using a 70-200 f/2.8L Lens with it as well.

Some great gear on here. I have a 5DMk2 on the way, and had a 70-200mm F/2.8L IS.

A tripod is such a personal thing imho, you really need to dive deep and explore your uses -- studio only? Landscapes? Nature hikes? I'd just point you towards Gitzo -- you won't be disappointed (I happen to have the GT3540, but again, that's my preference). For a ballhead, check out BH-55 from RRS (review: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/accessories/rrs-bh55.shtml). That's the combo I use and love.
