Download was pretty good, but upload was a bit slow today. But for 150 miles from the server, can't really complain.

I need to keep SOME things private. My ISP will narrow my location down pretty well. But they are amazing, and they don't offer network access to just anyone.

Will post my speedtest tomorrow when i am home. last time i did it it was 90+mbit.. this is consumer broadband in Finland over cable. Uncapped, unmetered, no restrictions.. I love it here.. oh and i live WAY out in the sticks..... but its like that all over scandinavia AFAIK.

Why do some people have such ridiculous speeds? 100+ Mb/s?

In my area there are 3 business deals that can get you 100mb+, but there is also a consumer cable package.

Cablevision iO Optimum Online now offers 101mb/s down (with 15mb/s up I think?) in their "Ultra" tier which costs I believe $99 in NYC or $129 month in the Metro area. My Verizon FiOS service is 50/20 for $99 in NYC or $135 the Metro area. I've thought about switching back to iO, but I'm weary of cablevision. In the past they've been known to be brutal on bittorrent users (not documented caps)..they say they don't now for this new service, but I'm dubious how long it will last.

Examples:
Martin C's iO connection, Optimum Ultra http://www.optimum.com/online/ultra.jsp :

Many college bounded students can gloat about their network connections. Lol, I know I can, 50/50 Mb/s. Not an insane 100/20 Mb/s, but still is faster than what I really need.

This isn't in my on-campus apartment mind you. In campus housing the ports are 10Mbps half-duplex which is horrible. There is also no wireless in campus housing (and you cannot setup routers or switches, 1 system per ethernet port). I think they do this to limit bandwidth usage of students. I work in the tech department and thats where I performed this test. Not to mention all of the freshman are gone so they aren't pounding the school's pipe downloading movies, porn, and music.

looking at some of the speed people are getting really bring home just how slow broadband is in the UK.

First speedtest is from this morning before upgrading to Virgin Media's top speed.

Second is after the installation.

I'm happy with the download speeds just wish they would give more on the upload speed.

UK broadband really is pathetic! There's no excuse for such a rich country to have such a lame broadband service. Didn't the recent Digital Britain report propose a minimum of 2Mb/s? Seriously? I could piss 2Mb!

Think the 2Mbps was the minimum by 2012, something like 15% of houses in the UK currently get broadband of less than 2Mbps.

Others are talking a minimum of 50Mbps to 90% of houses by 2017 by which time the rest of the world will be 10-15 times that speed.

So yup, broadband in the UK really does suck.
