I actually just heard of Citrix today for the first time from a fellow Mac user in a meeting. Is it like VPC or something? is it free?

Some of us use Tao at work, others on Outlook although we are all transitioning. The person was mentioning that using Citrix allowed them to log into the ''normal'' system (since very few co-workers have Macs) and check Tao mail, he uses Entourage to check the Outlook system mail. Are there any other uses for Citrix?
Citrix really isn't a PC/Windows emulator, though you might think it was if you just saw it running. Its used to access (Windows) applications that are hosted/executed on a remote server - you interact with the application locally, but its being run remotely. Kind of like a VNC/Remote Desktop kind of a thing, but for single apps (rather than control of a whole desktop).

The system requires a Citrix application Metaserver installed at your workplace (not a cheap software/hardware combo, BTW), and special licenses for the MS apps (and any other app used; not all PC apps can be used this way). We have some generic apps (Office XP suite) plus some specialized apps (Agfa PACSNet Web1000, PowerChart, PowerScribe, a few others) and I can access all remotely.

The sessions can be strongly encrypted, too, and the system admin has control over session timeout, etc.

The Mac client is pretty good. You can even access local drives to save data, etc (not sure about printing... haven't tried). On Windows, its a rootless service, so the remote apps pop up in their own windows & interact with the users desktop as if the program was running locally (more or less).

I see. The only foreseeable reason for me to have it then would be to use Tao, but since we are changing to Outlook soon (thankfully, never thought I would say that :p) I'll just avoid IT touching my computer and dog it out with forwarding from Tao until Outlook comes around and I can sync things easier.

Thanks for the explanation.

No need to apologize, but to help you out, there are some simple things you can do when it comes to things like this. For example, using cmd-shift-3 or -4 will allow you to take a screen grab (or portion thereof with -4) and save it right to the desktop as a PDF. You can then open it in Preview and export it to a JPEG with no problem at all. Hope this helps. :)

No problem. And it's probably just easiest to remember the key combination, it's not too complicated... ;)

deadlygopher: 78 items

(stridey has way to much homework for this sort of thing)

Thanks for the detailed analysis! :p ;) Hmm, Lacero can be very competitive, I'm eager to see how she might respond to this... ;)

Well I prefer having as much as possible at quick access. Having them broken into sections Mac/Internet/System/Image&web/schoolystuff/music&vid/games makes it quite alot easier to sort through and remember. :D

Could you please tell me what the little truck many people have in their dock is please?

And this is my dock, pretty basic apps here - I want some wacky apps but have no idea what are classed as 'wacky' heh.

Have deadlygopher launch all apps loaded with project files, then do an Exposé.

NOBODY MESSES WITH ME!
You're going down, deadlygopher! Oh, what's this? Not so tough, eh, big boy?!!?

Here's my current one. I used to store a lot more icons in it, but have been a bit less frugal since the arrival of my G5 in Spring (I like to keep it tidy).

I did an experiment a few months ago (too 'test' my G5) to see if I could open all the programs in my 'Applications' directory:

I was successful... without any slowdown too!
