Where did you buy them?

Has anyone here used the Sony MDR-7506?? I'm debating between those and the Audio Technica M40x. I've seen many great reviews for both. I'm no audiophile by any means but I want good sounding headphones without the boomy bass. I can easily tell the difference between good sound and bad sound but I'm certainly no audio expert. More and more I'm getting into stuff like movie scores (orchestral), classical and older artists like Billy Joel or Bruce Springsteen. I've never been much into hip-hop/rap but I do like a few songs. Any recommendations? I'd prefer to keep it under $200 (Canadian).

These are what I'm using now.

When I'm out and about I just use the Apple EarPods simply because I don't feel comfortable wearing big headphones outside going places.

If you're just going to be using them at home, the A900X (not to be confused with the AD900X) sounds prefect for you in your budget. The cable is too long to use in public, but for at home listening I think they'd really tick all your boxes and be an upgrade over both the M40X and MDR-7506. Looks like you'd have to import from Japan to get to Canada, but that'd be my recommendation in that budget.

Also, it's kind of weird that headphones cost so much more through Amazon in Canada than in the States. 200 CAD is about 150 US and that can get you some pretty great headphones, but the same cans in Canada cost closer to 300 CAD. If you have any friends or family in the US that could send them to you, you might be able to get some even nicer ones.

Yeah the A900X is $162 (CAD) which is more than either the MDR-7506 or the M40X. I'd rather not have them ship all the way from Japan and find out I don't like them so much. lol

Well, if it's between the two, go for the M40X. More accurate than the Sony and not as bassy as its big brother the M50. The MDR is alright, but nothing special at its price and is really starting to show its age.

Hmm okay. I've actually had the M40X before but at the time had to sell. I did enjoy the sound though. I've also thought about the Sony MDR-1A or AT MSR7 but they're both around $250.

I'm a big fan of the MSR7 as you can see by my previous posts in the thread. They're my daily drivers for around the house listening. Really incredible sound quality for the price. I found the MDR1A too bassy for my tastes, but for people who like hip hop or modern dance music it would probably be a good choice. Classical and Rock, maybe not so much. NAD HP50 is another headphone around that price a lot of people love. I hope to hear it sometime.

Do you think the MSR7 or M40X would be good for classical or classic rock? For some reason I seem to be going in that direction with my music tastes. I'm only 32 years old. LOL

Absolutely on the MSR7. They excel with classic rock, jazz, acoustic, classical, etc. The M40X will do fine with those genres, maybe a little lacking for classical. They're not on the level of the MSR7, but the price difference tells you all about that. At their price they're more than a solid option.

Well financially the M40x are more in my budget. But I do really like the look of the MSR7. Sadly they're a touch over $300 CAD if I order from the US or at least $326 if I order from Amazon Canada. The dollar exchange is horrible these days.

I know is at the limit of your budget (actually, 3 CAD above your stated limit), but I would highly suggest these babies for your home use. I have the 598, which have a very similar sound profile. I love them.

The M50X is cheaper, but my main concern is sound quality. What makes you say that the ATH is better?
Sound quality is excellent. The mids are spot on and there is just the right amount of bass. I've found that even casual listening from an iPhone will power the headphones just fine, a amp isn't necessary.

And that's important to me because I can't afford other equipment right now. I'm leaning toward the ATH 50X. Great reviews, detachable cord, and they're supposed to be very comfortable with glasses (which several of these headphones seem to ignore)

That depends on if you want open or closed cans.

That's where I'm confused. Which is better for more acoustic music like this (skip to 2:30)

That's on the extreme, but most of my music is instrumental and orchestral.

The main difference is open cans sound much more open and spacious. The problem is, everyone can hear your music and you can hear what other people are doing.

The hd598 really does need an amp to bring out the best in it, but I always found them too warm and didn't like them as much as a lot of people. If you're looking to try some open headphones, check out the ATH-AD900X. Can be found for the same price as the M50X and sound better than the HD598. Really excellent cans for the money. Not sure what your budget is, but the M50X has a reputation as the best closed headphone at its price and it's well deserved. I find them a tad too bassy and splashy in the treble compared to higher models, but at their price they're an excellent buy.
