After seeing Lau's homemade PowerBook and iPod case on a thread, I thought it'd be cool for everyone to post their homemade cases. A big show of "oo, look I know how to sew AND program!" or something like that.

So, here's my latest PowerBook case! I found some awesome velvet scrap, already padded with quilt batting! Rock!
A few layers of fleece also do the trick! (see the inside of the case)

and red lace isn't only good for binding, it makes your PowerBook look even hotter! Haha!

I'll repost my cases. The PowerBook one is a sleeve, made from camping mat foam, covered in brown cord, and lined with rather nice cotton fabric. There's a plastic bag inside so it's waterproof (paranoid? me? ) and then the top rolls over and buttons at the sides. Then the pocket on the front holds all the gubbins and buttons too.

The iPod case is just a little slip on thing, so I coordinate.

Katie, love yours. Anyone who combines red lace with a PB is ok in my book. Do you visit craftster.org. It's a bit of an inspiration to me. We can start a MacRumors crafty corner. Yay!

OK, I'll join in too. Here's my iPod sock, knitted on 4 needles to avoid a seam down the side. And complete with a little pocket to keep the headphones in. It kept me occupied while waiting for jury service!

edit: Sorry, should have said, case is very cool. The pocket for headphones is a great idea.

I've heard felted knitted cases were good too, but I don't know how easy it is to knit an oversized case and then shrink it to exactly the right size. If I figure it out, I fancy a felted PowerBook sleeve.

I hate it when small things are cuter than big things.
Like tiny pockets on iPod cases or size 7 shoes that are ugly in size 10.

LAU- Four needles is actually pretty easy! just try, and you'll be like "wha? why didn't I ever do this earlier!" I just don't have the patience.

Oh, to add to the b*tching, "where's my G5 PowerBook? I've been waiting FOREVER!"

4 needles is easy - just fiddly to start off with. And it's the sizing that drove me nuts. The pocket was an afterthought since it looked kinda bare. I like it - glad you do too. I love both your cases but my sewing abilities are virtually non-existent!

Lau - I'm not sure about knitted felted cases but I know of a woman who does funky things with felt at an art studio down in Deptford. I might go have a chat with her next time they have an Open Studio day and investigate the possibilities. That would be cool...since she drops in flowers and pictures into the felt.

I am loving those knit cases. One of my friends mums will knit cases for their iPods and they are damn nice. I wish I had a nit case. So soft...

Ooh, that sounds good. I might just bite the bullet and give it a shot. I know, i'll try the 4 needles, make a slight hash of it no doubt, and then I can try felting it. Then I will have honed my technique! Mwahahahahahaha.

This was the sort of thing I was thinking of.

As for sewing abilities, my hugely effective technique is to feed far too many layers of far too bulky material into my sewing machine, whilst swearing. The thread only breaks about three-quarters of the time, and I pretty much have to take a timeout after every seam. It's a slow and painful process. I really do it when I want to make stuff, whereas knitting I see as more of a pleasing thing.

I put my PB in it, walked over to my mom and just DEAD PAN I asked:
"does this case make my butt look big??"

Oh well, she already knows I'm loony. This was just further confirmation!



OK, I 'm tempted to go to the Apple store and ask the same question..

edit: the upper edge of just black I haven't finished yet.. I'm gonna find some underwear-ish looking elastic for that. If y'all have a better idea for it, share .

Just bum a machine from your local flea market, get some fabric and go nuts!

I was never actually taught, I just piece stuff together. It's allll good.

I was going to use old jeans to make a bedspread and a curtain for my bedroom a few years ago... Until I saw something similar in the Top Shop changing rooms (as a curtain, not being tried on!) and it put me off...

iBlue - sewing machines are the way forward! There's so much stuff you can make by sewing 3 sides round a square, and handstitching that's a hassle, but on a sewing machine, you can whip round the sides in 2 minutes, and then people say, wow, what a fabulous cushion cover/iPod case/sarong/etc. It's all good

On the interwebs, I've seen pillows with an iPod pocket sewn right on, for like $30!
What do y'all think of those?


Instead of waking up with pillow face lines, you wake up with a giant rectangle pressed into your cheek. hehe.

That looks AMAZING! I'm so jealous. I'm also curious; did you use a "stronger" needle and/or stronger thread to go through multiple layers of denim?

Seriously, I can't decide which I like more... Katie's jean bag, Applespider's knit iPod case, or Lau's cord concoctions?! DAH! I WANT THEM ALL!

You women are so talented. *sniff* iBlue, I'm w/ you on this one. I can't do anything stereotypically "womanly" like I can't cook or sew or be nurturing.

I did get to rethread the machine a couple times! I was using the spool of thread that was on sale, so that's why it kept breaking. Blech. It was annoying, and it slowed things down, but it wasn't fatal.

Nope, no special needle.
I have a special talent of being able to break needles left and right. Thankfully, I broke NONE! I just skipped sewing over all the belt loops.

If I want to accessorize, I could still put a belt through the loops.

If I make a second one, It'll probably look a lot better... I did this with NO pattern (except for the one in my mind).. EEP!


Hmm.. I want to use the word "thread" somehow in a sewing-related pun. Can't think of anything right now. Make up your own and blame it on me.

if I can motivate myself enough (and actually remember) to go pick up a sewing machine I might give it a try. I think perhaps I will try with more innocuous items though. I won't be uset if I bust a seam and some pillow stuffing spills out... I'd be much more likely to throw a fit to shame satan himself if I ripped a seam and my powerbook took a tumble... ACK the thought is too much for me to bear!

Just make it out of really sturdy fabric and go over the line a few times if you're that worried.

Also, use a heavy-weight fabric like denim, corduroy, canvas.
NOT SATIN, unless there is a totally sweet, thick lining.. some fabric can tear super-easily.
