hey guys, i've been looking to get a new computer desk. basically, I just want a basic working station with just the desk-top, and the height is interchangeable. the galant apparently can go from 23" to 32". are there any other ones similar or that are better than the galant?

There seems to be a trend in this thread among people who buy wood products from IKEA. It's either the really dark (almost black) wood or the really light Beech/Birch.

I think that IKEA's Oak options are much nicer. It's not dark at all, but not completely pale and lifeless like the Beech. Is there any reason why you chose not to get Oak?

This is my desk and chest of drawers. Jonas and Malm in the beautiful Oak which IKEA has. I saw them side by side with the other options and it was pretty obvious to me that these were the best looking.

The far end of my bedroom with my gaming and TV area. Billy (great, lots of room for consoles) again in Oak.

I would have, but the expedit only comes in 3 colors. (when I got it) I would have loved Oak or Medium brown

In the US, a lot of their furniture is not offered in Oak finish. Mostly White, Birch, Medium Brown, or the Black/brown. They also have the pine dressers, but again not oak.
I think another reason a lot of people choose the birch is because it is a veneer, and I believe the oak is just an "Oak-affect" meaning it is paper and not a real wood veneer.

Love your setup. I've always wanted to mount my monitor on an arm. How much are those mounts?

Anyway, this is a picture of my room before i finished setting it up. The angle is awkward b/c I took it through the doorway.

Since so many people complain about ikea for being cheap and cookie cutter... my dresser and desk are ikea, but people rarely guess that. They do make some a small range of styles and they do have varying quality. You can buy super cheap and get particle board, or you can spend a little more and get all wood. My furniture is all wood.

I like Ikea because it's cheap enough that I can move it (I move every 12-18 months on average) and not worry about denting it or scratching it. I can pull apart everything pretty quickly to move it in pieces (I just moved the desk up a flight of stairs by myself a couple weeks ago. It only took a screwdriver to take it apart and put it back together.) And it's solid construction and looks decent. Plus I was able to pick it out myself and bring it home the same day -- didn't have to pay for delivery or hang around all day for a delivery man to show up.

The bedding at Ikea, though, is laughable to me. I'm tall and having a bed that's 2 feet off the ground is a no-go. So I bought all of the bedding stuff full price at regular stores. I wish Ikea would improve their offerings there.

I swear he stated it before in a pervious thread and I looked it up. I am 99% sure its this: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10828&cs_id=1082808&p_id=5400&seq=1&format=2 They just stand it up, no actual arm motion. Still give nice clearance and high adjust though, and dirt cheap.+

And are your Dock icons set to maximum size? They look massive if I am seeing your desktop correctly.

Ha, yeah. Max size. Nice spot. I don't like the "magnifier" effect when you hover over, so on my big screen i set the dock to full size.

On my laptop I usually set the dock to autohide.

yes, those desk mounts are from monoprice. dirt cheap, but great quality.

do you guys think cutting a vika table top is a bad idea? i have an extra one, and I want to make my desk the full length of the window/between the book cases. the top is only $20, so I am not worried about ruining it, but don't want to waste the time of having it cut.

This is what it is made of:
Top: Fiberboard, Printed and embossed acrylic paint
Frame: Particleboard, ABS plastic
Filling material: Paper
Bottom: Fiberboard

Kinda concerned about the paper filling.

With a sharp blade I think you can cut it without wrecking it. But I'd be worried about the dust.

Does anybody here have the VRETA sofa or other items? What do you think of them (quality, comfort, durability, etc.)? I will be moving to an apartment soon after 25 years in the same house and need some smaller furniture that is better sized for an apartment; most furniture stores seem to major on really large pieces that either don't fit or would like way out of place.

My new bedroom will be long (14.5') but narrow (10.5'), and I really need to fit a queen bed and dresser/chest in the short way, but this is really hard with a standard queen bed with headboard/footboard; most are >90", which only leaves a 1.5' path between the bed and dresser. I have never had a platform bed before, but some of the IKEA beds (such as the HEMNES series) are much shorter. I just don't know how a platform bed/slats/mattress would feel compared to a standard innerspring mattress/box spring foundation. so I'm a little apprehensive.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am more than just a little bit nervous about this whole moving stuff, and an apartment is a big change for me.

Yes, my dorm room furniture was reminiscent of oak ikea furniture.

Darkbrown/black FTW

I just spent a couple of hours at IKEA this evening looking at furniture and I was most impressed with the white, but also liked the black/brown on some pieces. They also had several metal beds that I liked, but I have no idea what coordinates with metal beds (chest, dresser, nightstand). I really liked the VRETA couch and chair in Mjuk Ivory; I just wonder how well they will hold up over time.

For me, the question is, what in our house isn't from Ikea? Every time we've shopped for furniture we look around, hate everything other stores have, and end up at Ikea.

livingroom1.jpg

Starting with the den: the sofa (a hold over from our old house, doesn't really fit the new space, but we haven't replaced it yet) tables, entertainment center (two of the same Ikea cabinets elevated on steel legs) pots, clocks on the wall (showing time in Sydney, Aus where we have family, my wife's native Europe, and local time here in Los Angeles). More recent than this photo, we replaced the blue chair with an Ikea Poang chair.

bedroom01.jpg

Bedroom: Ikea bed with roll out end tables. (It was my wife's great idea to put speakers/ subwoofer in the end tables, with cabling running under the baseboards, rather than a stereo sitting out somewhere.)

bedroom02.jpg

Dressers, ball lamps, hamper, more pots from where else? Ikea!

kitchenset.jpg

Kitchen: Ikea shelf, bread box, cart and stools, flower pots, etc. I recently built a computer for the kitchen, mostly for music, looking up recipes, movies, etc.

pantry.jpg

Off from the kitchen is a pantry that's like a repository for Ikea stuff that wouldn't fit anywhere else. Eventually we'll probably get rid of most of this and redo the space (probably with more Ikea stuff!) but for now it's kind of my wife's hideout workspace.

diningset.jpg

Dining room: table (I love it- it's small for just us, but folds out twice as big for guests), chairs, lamp, frames, probably the candles.

In my home office, I have an Ikea armchair (rescued from the AS-IS section) plus Ikea shelves in the walk in closet. Also around the house a few other assorted chairs, tables, lamps, shelves etc. from Ikea.

I also have a bedroom full of Hopen stuff, but it's messier than the office so I won't be posting pictures.
