Mine is being weird. Yesterday I got 2hrs usage and it was dead. Day before I got 5. Today I'm at 3 hrs with 30% left. So it fluctuates alot! I'll prob get to an apple store for this one cause it's getting a bit frustrating.

Apparently there is a "Restore Bug" as a lot of people (me included) are reporting awaful battery life after the 3.0.1 upgrade.
I've also read, though can't confirm yet, that it requires a "Restore to new phone" operation to put it right.

Mine went from 80% to 20% within three hours of NON-use!

Yeah I think 3.01 has ruined my battery. It was fine on 3.0. Come on update.....

This may be helpful...

I turned push email on for one account and experienced about a 32% decrease in battery life.

STATS
------------------------
3.6 Hours usage
1 day 20 hours of standby
12% battery remaining

SETTINGS
------------------------
Location Services: On
Bluetooth: Off
Push: On (notifications off, push email for 1 account - the rest fetch)
Fetch: 30 minutes w/ 2 accounts
3G: On
Wifi: On w/ 'Ask to Join' off
Brightness: Auto On/Slider at 25%

USAGE BREAKDOWN
------------------------
30 minutes 3G voice
1 hour gaming
2 hours Safari
~10 minutes App Store/Camera/Google Maps/Facebook/Twitterific

If I do the math to get a general picture of the battery life change:

STAT Set 1: PUSH OFF
----------------------------------------------------------------------
5.5 hrs usage/8% battery left * X hours left/92 battery used

x = ~.5 hours.
Total Usage = ~6 hours w/ ~2 days standby

STAT Set 2: PUSH ON (One Exchange email account)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
3.6 hrs usage/12% battery left * X hours left/88% battery used

x = ~.5 hours.
Total Usage = ~4.1 hours w/ ~2 days standby

PERCENTAGES
----------------------------------------------
6 hours/100 = .06
6 hours - 4.1 hours = 1.9 hours.

1.9 hours / .06 = 31.6%

Therefore, percentage of Set 1 battery life decreased ~32% with push email enabled. Slightly disappointing.

This should be largely dependent on the number of emails that you get on that address. If you only get 2 emails per day then you are only having your phone activate to get data two times rather than every 15 min.

If you get an email every 10 minutes you're collecting data 33% more often.

My email amounts don't typically fluctuate that much. I would assume the number received between the two tests is similar.

Well, that's my point. Let me try to word this properly.
  • If your phone is set to Fetch every 15 minutes and you receive any number, say 20 emails, your phone fetches data 4 times every hour.
  • If your phone is set to Push and you receive 20 emails every hour, your phone fetches data 20 times every hour.

So in that case PUSH uses MORE power.

  • If this is swapped and say you have Fetch every 15 min and get 1 email an hour, your phone fetches 4 times an hour.
  • Then if you are set ot Push and get 1 email an hour your phone fetches 1 time an hour.

So in that case FETCH uses more power.

Understood. Thank you for the clarification. My next question would be, is such an impact on battery normal or to be expected? Via Apple's own admission during the keynote for 3.0, their push notifications only drain battery 20% more than without.

Their value of 20% is likely based on a certain assumption of email frequency.

I noticed a signifigant difference when I switched my Contacts and Calendar sync to Fetch and left my email push. I don't know what it was, maybe it was pushing redundant data to my phone, but having contacts and events pushed was really hurting me. Also, I don't need a contact change or calendar event updated more often than 15 min. If anyone adds an event to your calendar for something sooner than 15 min, they'll probably send an email, which I still have push.

Thanks for the speedy response. I'll have to try that some time. Push email was a great convenience, but I love battery life more :)

Yea, I'm suggesting keeping push email but turning off push contacts and calendar in advanced settings.

Resetting ALL settings (not all contents or network) REALLY does help. Its a great compromise compared to starting afresh completely from a restore as you get to keep you SMS messages and other general stuff but still have a clean 3GS settings slate.

I just did it and my battery is STILL at 100% after 9m of use and over 6hrs of standby

With a 3Gs I see :D

30% Battery Life

Usage - 2 Hours, 35 Minutes
Standby - 1 Day, 9 Hours

All usage is mostly from phone calls. Calls were made in a poor reception area, barely 1 bar - 3G. Had several emails the first night as well. Fetch/Push is 1 Hour. Also did some texting. Everything else is default out of the box. This is my 11th phone. I am very happy with the battery life and thankfully, the screen is perfect as well. A winner.

Those numbers always shock me. 11th phone? Do you mean your 11th iPhone?!?!? I got my 3G on release day and I am still using my original. Am I that lucky that I got a good one or am I just more willing to put up with small cracks, dust under the screen, lifting bezel and poor battery life? :(

Amazes me as well, there's no way I could be arsed going into an apple store 11 times! I think if you find the build quality that bad it's time to move to another manufacturer.. 11times is ridiculous!

After 2 phone's I'd just tell them to keep it and go get a Blackberry. Haha. Thank god it didn't come to that. :D

To each their own. I did not have a problem with the build quality. I had a problem with the screen. I only had two iphones that had battery issues. Everything else with the phones - were just fine.

No exchanges too place at the Apple store. None. Only diagnostics were performed there and a screen swap that was reversed because the replacement was worse than the previous.

Apple has a SERIOUS PROBLEM with their screens right now. Plain and simple. There should not be such a huge variation in quality in that regard. Coming from a perfectly clear, crisp, white 3G screen makes it even worse. Not to mention that SOME of the 3GS also have perfect screens. I will spare you the information as there are threads regarding it.

I love the phone and was NOT willing to give up so easily. I am happy I did not. Should I have had to go through 11 phones to get 1 that was correct? Nope. Am I anal? Nope. I had no other issues with my phone - just the MAIN item of it - the screen.

Yea, what you're saying makes sense. I'm talking about the people who's phones are the ones that get the cracks or screens break or all the little things that only happen to so many people, but it happens over and over.

I'd do the same thing as you in your situation. Not that many have a bad screen. So what are your chances of getting two in a row? That is a warranty thing and you weren't trying to scam anyone.

I was merely commenting on people who have 11 phones and how crazy that is. Think about it... If every phone has a 10% chance of being bad (probably a high estimate), then the chances that 10 in a row are faulty is 1/10,000,000,000 . I'm pretty sure you have a better chance of winning the Lottery. :D

Right now my iPhone 3GS is at 15%.

Usage: 7 Hours 0 Minutes
Standby: 3 Days 8 Hours

Brightness is fairly high
Push is off
No 3G network here, so its off.

I have used email, internet, text, and some phonecalls.

Ya but no way as good as yours

Do u mind turning on push email for one of your accounts to see how it affects your battery life?

Ok....another post about my battery but this time I enabled push for one of my email accounts and here is my other usage:

About 40 min of talk time on 3G
4 email account using fetch every 15 min
1 email account using push
Heavy Text messaging, Myspace and facebook app, some internet usage
Some GhostMac usage and about 10 min of using bluetooth
Wifi On

What do u guys think ?

so i finally did a long test to see what i could get out of my battery and i was pleasantly surprised.

over a two day span i got 5hr17min usage and 1day13hr of standby. this was from 9am yesterday to 10:30pm tonight. this primarily consisted of internet usage, facebook/twitter, text, a couple of phone calls, and a heavy 30min outing of Slugger 3D.

i usually charge it every night and still will but i wanted to see what i could push the phone to do. im sure as i continue to use it the phone will get better life. lets see what 3.1 brings us!

also i forgot the most important part...this is with EVERYTHING on except bluetooth. im talking push mail and notifications, 3G, wifi, another email account fetching every hour, locations services, etc...

i probably couldve gone another hour except Slugger 3D and most other games rape my battery.

here's a pic...
