I still can't believe that they did that. Bastards.
Same here. Todays Yankee fan doesn't give a crap about the history and tradition that went on at the old Yankee Stadium. Neither does the city. No matter how much Steinbrenner said he cared for the Yankee tradition and history, we all knew he just wanted more money. Now he did reinvest that money into the team, but that was his goal. The Old Yankee Stadium was failing to bring him in the money he wanted. He wanted to ditch it ever since the 1980's( fresh off its renovations). So he lobbied the city government( since the city owned Yankee Stadium since the renovation) to build him a new stadium.
Now I am not exactly opposed to getting a new stadium. Granted the concourses were not that wide and in rain delays or post-game, it became a nightmare. And New Yankee Stadium is a magnificent tribute to the old Stadium. But, the new stadium has meant the demise of the old stadium. I get that they had to replace the park that new Yankee Stadium sits on now, but there was no reason why Old Yankee Stadium couldn't be converted into such a park. Do a partial demolition and remove the upper deck, bleachers, and mezzanine and keep the field level seating and exterior walls standing. You could put another diamond in where death valley used to be in left center field. Kids would love to play on the same field as past Yankee greats. There was zero reason why the whole thing had to come down.
You can bet Boston and Chicago fans would tie themselves to Fenway and Wrigley before they would let them tear it down. And Yankee fans let it go without a peep, zero uproar. This is a by product of Steinbrenner. He pounded the will to win into the team and fanbase, it made them forget the rest of the important things about that team. And now whenever you hear the announcers even mention the old place as a separate stadium, it is a way to bash it and say how much better new Yankee Stadium is. Other times, they have you believe Don Larson's perfect game happened at NYS.
