Me, too...HUH!?
I did a bunch of reading about thujone, the wormwood extract that was, at one time, thought to be a hallucinogen. Apparently the reputation was a result of several anecdotal reports by members of the art community and the demimonde of absinthe's effects (as well as the painting,
L'absinthe, portraying a dissolute looking woman).
The story of Van Gogh's unfortunate ear experience is often attributed to, among other things, his consumption of absinthe. What is not often mentioned (it makes a better story) that he had been drinking a whole lot of other alcoholic beverages in addition to the absinthe.
There was a time when thujone was thought hallucinogenic because of the resemblance of the thujone molecule and the THC molecule. As a result, absinthe was outlawed in many places, both in Europe and the US. Research has demonstrated pretty much conclusively, that thujone is not a hallucinogen. Absinthe with a thujone content of 35gm/L is legal in Europe and the UK, and with a content of no more than 10mg/L is legal in the US (we never let facts get in the way of irrational terror).
The explanation of the reputation anecdotally derived is that the effect is more related to the alcohol consumption than the thujone effect. Another theory suggests that the absinthe produced and consumed in the demimonde was of very poor quality, and contained contaminants that may have produced the purported addictive and hallucinogenic effects.
I do not, for a moment, question your own experience with the substance. That's why I want to give it a try myself!
