A Synology server to replace my recently retired Time Capsule.

It's been one of those days (coincidence that I started back at "work" today?)

Netgear 8-port GigEth switch, with 4 PoE ports (GS308P)
Netgear AC1200 Gigabit router (R6220)
Netgear AC1200 Range Extender/Access Point (EX6120)
Thread locker
Wire brushes
4 & 5 mm x 200mm steel rod (in rod we trust).

This interests me as I am still using a 2014 Time Capsule. Can you please share your reason for the choice and your experiences after the change. Thank you.
I was running out of storage on the TC and it was on the slow side. I had also been using it as a router but needed to change that.

I went for the Synology because it seemed fairly easy to setup, the consensus seems to be the software is better than the qnap which is the main alternative.

I did briefly think about building a box myself but I don't really have the time right now.

Kissed goodbye to my 2009 MacBook white today sent it to a deserving member of my wife's family in Mindanao Philippines. It had been a really good work horse but man it was heavy as was born out by the LBC shipping charge probably more than the laptop was worth itself haha! Still always better to keep a Mac running and help someone.

I am also using the time capsule as a router as it provides 5Ghz connectivity and my service providers router is pretty cheap and 2.4Ghz only. Storage is not an issue for me I have separate RAID back up options.

I also don't want to build anything from scratch although I could. Thank you, I will give it a look easy setup and user friendly software is always a plus!

I replaced my iPhone 6S with a mint condition 11 for $500, saving $100 over new and will sell the 6S soon.

Welp so much for that. Turns out the EX6120 range extender was out of stock, and the billing system only allows cancelling entire orders, so I ended up with two separate orders, from two other vendors (who, as a bonus, speak much better English): one for the same GS308P PoE switch, and another for higher end stuff, simply because it's what was in stock:

an R6900 router
an EX7000 Access point/Extender

One bonus is that apparently the Extender's extra ethernet ports can be used while it's in AP mode (which contradicts what the docs say, but apparently the docs are wrong).

I don't recommend those 4 seasons tyres, they may be legal in winter (where you are required to have winter tyres in winter) but they perform noticeably worse than actual winter tyres. And they're bad in summer too...

Agreed. Those “All Season-tyres” are actually no-season tyres.

Much worse then regular winter tyres in the snow, and especially bad in the wet. If you’re not an active driver you might not notice until you really need them.

Just a heads up @Big Stevie

Also went with Synology and have been very happy. What's not always made clear in discussion is "home server" = this could be a fun project and sure you can build one for less than a Synology whereas "backup" = this needs to be 100% reliable and usable by everyone from me to the cat.
