A Synology server to replace my recently retired Time Capsule.
This interests me as I am still using a 2014 Time Capsule. Can you please share your reason for the choice and your experiences after the change. Thank you.

Just got a set delivered yesterday and they are working well. had to go up to the large..
I am also using the time capsule as a router as it provides 5Ghz connectivity and my service providers router is pretty cheap and 2.4Ghz only. Storage is not an issue for me I have separate RAID back up options.I was running out of storage on the TC and it was on the slow side. I had also been using it as a router but needed to change that.
I went for the Synology because it seemed fairly easy to setup, the consensus seems to be the software is better than the qnap which is the main alternative.
I did briefly think about building a box myself but I don't really have the time right now.
Nice! Be sure to share some images over in the photo of the day thread on here.![]()
Delivered on the last day of 2020.![]()
I don't recommend those 4 seasons tyres, they may be legal in winter (where you are required to have winter tyres in winter) but they perform noticeably worse than actual winter tyres. And they're bad in summer too...
Two of my favs.Heard nothing but good things about Buffalo Trace. I got a bottle of Knob Creek waiting to be opened soon haha.
Also went with Synology and have been very happy. What's not always made clear in discussion is "home server" = this could be a fun project and sure you can build one for less than a Synology whereas "backup" = this needs to be 100% reliable and usable by everyone from me to the cat.I am also using the time capsule as a router as it provides 5Ghz connectivity and my service providers router is pretty cheap and 2.4Ghz only. I also don't want to build anything from scratch although I could. Thank you, I will give it a look easy setup and user friendly software is always a plus!
