m1 setup with three monitors, plus my Late 2015 iMac as a sideboy.
The Mini is next to the speaker.

How did you manage to connect 3 screens on your Mini ? Is your mini enough powerful to manage 3 screens at the same time ? I have also same configuration and bought an Egpu to be sure that the Mini can take on the screens

How do you manage with several opened windows ? Have you any issues with some apps which open on full windowed base ?
No problems at all.

I routinely have Chrome open on two different desktops (with each having about 20 open tabs), another desktop with Outlook, another desktop with Adobe, Word and maybe PPT.

The only thing with opening an app with full screen is that there is lots (and I mean "lots") of white space on the borders.

LG 5K is connected via Thunderbolt, one Dell is connected via HDMI, and the other Dell is connected via USB-3 thanks to a StarTech adaptor and DisplayLink.

The 16/512 m1 Mini has not shown the slightest problem in powering three monitors.

How do you switch between Mini & MBP ? Unless you use one device on the same time?
Just different inputs to the monitor and switch there, for example between HDMI1 and HDMI2. (I also use screen sharing a lot 🙂) There are more ‘elegant‘ solutions but I’ve tried a lot of them, and this just ends up being quicker and less ‘faff’.

we have the same monitor
It’s close to the same. Yours has 3 slimmer bezels, which looks better than mine. I chose this one since it has the 60 watt thunderbolt port for my 12” MacBook or my iPad Pro. I love this 32” 4K screen. Just wish it had an IPS display.

That 32"version is a VA Panel, right?

I have the 27UK650-W and love it. The colour output is pretty close to my calibrated profile.

My desktop setup, featuring an M1 Mini, homebuilt PC, and a few other goodies...
Alright, you need to tell me everything that's on this desk :) Particularly the speakers, speaker stands and the little hi-if setup next to the left one! I'm looking at Yamaha HS8 ones myself to go neutral for music production and these stands are so minimalist.

While you wait for threee to respond I think the speakers look like a pair of of Edifer R1280T's. The little hi-fi setup is Schiit and from top to bottom they appear to be a Magni headphone amp, a Loki Mini+ tone control and a Sys which is a 2 way passive pre amp.

They look like 1280T. Edifier has been build good quality loudspeakers, very decent products. I like my pair of 1700T.

But @PeterJP talked about bigger and louder sets, the Yamaha HS8 is a big fella, with 8" woofers! It won't feet easily in such desktop.

Hi PeterJP, thanks for your interest in my setup. Ok, first the speakers. They are Edifier R1280T's, only $99 from Amazon. I've had them for a couple years, but just added them to my desk setup recently. I got back into listening to vinyl 2 years ago, bought a new turntable, and got these powered speakers to go with it. I read through the reviews, and saw a few YouTube reviews, and was impressed. I bought them, and was even more impressed.

The speakers I originally had on my desktop were a pair of AudioEngine A5+'s, which sound really good, and are much more pricey. They cost nearly $400. One day I spent a couple hours doing some A/B comparisons between the two pairs of speakers, and decided I like the sound from the Edifiers better. I think the bass is smoother, and seemingly more impactful. And the highs were better as well. And I noticed details in my music that I just didn't hear with the more expensive AudioEngine speakers. To my ears, they have a nicer overall sound. So they have become my desktop speakers. I'm not even using the AudioEngine speakers anymore.

The stands for these speakers are homemade. I wanted to elevate these speakers 6-7" so the tweeters would sit about ear height. I don't have a table saw, and I needed the cuts to be perfectly straight. I looked around at retail speaker stands, and didn't find many that I liked. And they were much more expensive than I was hoping for. So I decided to make my own, with the least amount of work involved. I was searching Amazon and found these nice little precut MDF pieces, 6x6" square, for about $15 for a pack of 4. I bought two packs of them. I glued them together with some wood glue, sanded the corners just enough to make them slightly rounded and not so sharp, and painted them white to match my white theme.

Finally, on to the little audio setup. It's a stack of schiit. Literally a stack of schiit. lol. From an American company called Schiit Audio. They make many high quality audio components, at affordable prices. That's what they claim, but they do have amplifiers and DACs costing north of $2K. My components are some of the more reasonably priced ones.

The bottom component is called a Schiit Sys. It's basically a 2-way audio switch box, with just a push button to select the source, and a knob to control the volume from the source. My 2 audio sources currently are my turntable, which is about 5 feet away, out of the picture, and the audio output from my monitor. My Mac mini, my PC, and my PS4 are all connected to the display, and whichever of those I'm using is the output that the monitor sends to the Schiit Sys.

The output of the Sys goes to the next component up, with is called a Schiit Loki Mini. It's a simple 4 band EQ, for shaping the sound to my liking. I mainly use it to cut the highs back a bit that can be a bit harsh with some music, or boosting or cutting the low bass a bit. It's a fun little device.

The output from the Loki Mini goes to the box on top, called the Schiit Magni 3. It's a headphone amplifier. It also has an output on back that you can connect to a pair of powered speakers, which of course is connected to my Edifier speakers.

I also have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 Ohm headphones, which you can see hanging under the desk. They sound really incredible plugged into that headphone amp. I just bought them 2 weeks ago, and love them. I always thought my Airpods maxes sounded good. I still think they do, but not nearly as good as the Beyerdynamics.

I will be slightly changing this setup any day now. I've ordered another piece of Schiit. I actually bought this one from an eBay seller. I offered him $60 and he accepted my offer. It's called a Schiit Modi. It's a DAC. Apple Music's new lossless audio made me decide to get a DAC to fully experience lossless, since lossless won't work with any of Apple's wireless headphones. I'll post of pic or two of the updated setup this coming week once I get my new DAC.

Well, that's basically it, I think. If there's anything else you'd like to know, don't hesitate to ask!

Wow, it took me so long to reply that a few others stepped in and helped out.
And yes, they were correct about the speakers. Not audiophile by any means, but really nice sounding inexpensive speakers, in my opinion. I disassembled them and painted them white...

I just started building the Schiit system a couple months ago. It started with just the EQ, and snowballed from there.
It's very clean, arguably audiophile quality stuff. I'm certainly not taking advantage of that with my speakers, but I surely am when I use the headphones.

Hi threee! Thanks for the detailed description. I have heard of most of the equipment, so while I don't recognise a piece of Schiit when I see it, I know their reputation. I was once looking at a Modi, actually, but in the end I bought a Dragonfly because of the form factor. It's connecting my HTPC (non-mac) to my Rotel amp in the living room.

I actually have a pair of AudioEngine A2+ that I'm using for music production, but it's not really suited for that. I borrowed it from my Raspberry Pi setup with an Allo Boss DAC, which as a DAC with uncompressed audio files sounds just about as good as my €2000 Rega Planet 2000 CD player. So even for that setup, the AudioEngines may be a bit underspec'ed, but hey, RPi + AE A2+ + touch screen makes for a great radio replacement.

So I'm looking to expand my music setup to get it up to a decent standard. At work, we use Yamaha HS5, but not for music production. I checked the spec and the price of the HS8. The frequency response curve is absolutely dead flat and with 8" woofers, I won't need a sub. The audio interface is a Motu M4. I used it with a Beyerdynamic Lagoon, wired, which sounds absolutely brilliant. But it's too tiring to work with headphones all of the time. Beyerdynamic really created an incredible headset there. It's top notch, but disguised as an ANC commercial thingamagick. The Motu now goes to the A2+'s earphone input, but they would go with a balanced connection to the HS8s.

Speaker stands are a bit difficult indeed. They always look like a stick with two plates at the end, so yours attracted my attention. Nice to see you're doing some DIY to pimp the desk! I see myself going that route as well. Music desks are so fugly or extremely expensive. I can see myself going for a desk that's a bit too high, but with a huge drawer for (qwerty) keyboard, mouse and (music) keyboard. We'll see.
