^What is that particular green application in the dock above?

Its spotify, the music streaming service. Seems strange that they haven't rolled it out in America yet, as I'm sure there were release dates set. You can still get it though if you get a premium account with a European based billing address. Its only the free version that you need a European location (or proxy i guess) to access. On a more relevant note, thanks to the ridiculously cool setups in this thread, I'm going out to buy up a load of stuff for my desk, and should post some pics later on.

It's an application called Spotify which just lets you listen to a large library of music for free, with adverts occasionally coming up (unless you pay for the premium service). It's awesome. Only available in some European countries though.

Edit: Damn, beaten to it :p

We'll let you have Spotify as long as we get Netflix ;) Seriously though, I think it's down to music label licensing deals and things like that which have stopped Spotify launching elsewhere.

I think its one of the only things us Englishers have had before our American cousins. Nice to have one over them for once :).
Although I've had to take a tiny little slice out of my uni funds for next year to keep Spotify, as I'm abroad at the moment. To be honest though, the added bonus of having it on the iphone, plus offline tracks, no ads and that warm fuzzy feeling of being "Premium", makes it seem like pretty good value for money. Especially as its basically unlimited instant music.

raymondkerr I really like the lights you've put up. The cord management of them is quite good. I agree with others, the boxes are a bit ridiculous. Even with my first mac I never displayed my boxes. I wonder if it's an age thing.

can I ask where you got the wallpaper on your imac? :D

Yeah sure - it's from this site:-

http://imacwallpapers.com/wallpaper/978/HD-Manhattan-Wallpaper.html

You have to register - but it's free and only takes a few seconds!

I keep mine around in the closet in case I ever want to sell something. Generally people seem more willing and excited to buy something if you have all the original packaging and boxes. Call me OCD (I am...painfully OCD), but I even kept the plastic jacket for my wireless keyboard. Yikes.

I do the exact same - and for the same reasons too. Mine are all in my wardrobe :D

The dock is from Belkin, it has a 5 port USB hub on the back. Mains powered and will fit any ipod/iphone. It is fairly old now and I think it has been discontined.

I really like that dock - going to pick one up - they have have a new supply on ebay. Should be a great solution for me and my gajillion usb item. I like how all the ports are on the back - makes it look very clean.

As for the box-haters, I must disagree. Specifically to whoever cited the Powerbook G4 box as worth keeping:

I mean, the thing is nice looking and all, but I feel like the minimal look of the MBP box is really beautiful and it manages to convey that in a much smaller physical setting.

As for my own box parade, it takes up two shelves in my closet:

And last, but not least, my own setup:

The whole thing (minus the leftmost printer, nothing special, just a Canon MP250):

hah I like your "box setup" you have there. My boxes are just stacked on the side of my closet, one day I'll get around to clearing a shelf in there and doing a showcase like what you have there. My imac box is in the garage though, that thing is just too damn big to keep around the house. I agree, I love the new apple boxes, there's no other company that comes close to their style and simplistic packaging. I think the older apple packaging have that vintage tech look and are just so rare to see that they have their own charm though

I could have used a MacBook box when I sold and shipped mine today. UPS charged me $15 just for a box! I have my iMac box still thankfully.

In my quite extensive experience in selling used Apple products over the years through craigslist and kijiji, I've never had someone even ask "does it come with the box?" I think the notion that it affects resale value is a myth. I always price my products near the high end of the range as I take good care of my stuff (though I NEVER use a case on Apple products) and I never have trouble selling them at full asking.

Funny, whenever I buy or trade Apple stuff, I always ask if it comes with a box. Not having a box doesn't put me off entirely, but it indicates to me that whoever owns it is an Apple fan (who besides Apple fans keeps boxes?) and they've likely taken better care of it.

No one ever asks me if my stuff comes with boxes when I sell/trade it, but that might be because I always say it does (or doesn't) in the post.

Well I'm certainly a huge Apple fan, have been using Apple products for the better part of a decade, and I keep my Apple products in excellent condition, but I don't keep boxes. ;)

so many boxes...to each his own. I keep my mac boxes, but only for resell or transport purposes. I agree with a poster above; people do seem to be happier when you can provide the box (as well as the original manuals) for them to take their new Shiny home in.

I keep all my boxes as well, only Apple boxes I have thrown away were for my keyboard, and Mac Pro and Cinema display because those boxes took up far too much space.

Hey, could you post the ebay link to it? I'm also interested. Thank you.

To my detriment, I still have all of my original Mac boxes in a neat pile in the garage. One of the big problems with buying electronics is they put so much foam in the box, and nobody takes foam - in our town the garbage refuses to take it as well as the recycling, so you're left with this big pile of stuff.

The count? Something like a half dozen Cinema Display boxes..

I'm sure it's possible to be an Apple fan and not keep the boxes. When someone has the boxes, though, it makes me more sure that they're an Apple fan. I find that people that don't keep the boxes tend to be like my dad, a die-hard PC user who bought a MacBook to develop iPhone apps and would have thrown out the box first thing had I not insisted he keep it. Not saying that's true for everyone though.
