I feel like your eyes are WAY too close to that tv screen.

I concur. But I generally use the trackpad/keyboard from my bed about 5 feet away plus its great for Netflix/Hulu. Only other option was to fork over more $$$ or use my prior 15" dell screen and move the TV but this works for now.

My Mac Setup for Summer

Hey up all just a quick snap shot of my desk for the summer

My Setup Sumer 2011 by Ryan J. Nicholson, on Flickr

So after getting a new double bed a couple of weeks back I re-arranged my room for everything to fit properly. Still digging my amazing £6.50 Toshiba music centre not bad considering when it was new it retailed at £800 in 1978. I'm really getting into listening to Vinyl and haven't used my iTunes on my Mac in quite a while only when syncing my iPhone/iPad.

I'm a huge fan of 1970s electronics I really dig the brushed aluminium finish they used, as apposed to all these god awful plastic boxes they call Hi-Fi's these days. XD

So just over a month before I start my degree in Criminology at University and I am now in the process of buying items ready for starting the course. So far i've bought a black hardshell case for my Macbook Pro and a 320GB G-Tech Mini hard drive for transporting my files around, that should be arriving in the next few days

6,50 pounds is a bargain, but that system and the way you set it up has nothing even remotely to do with hifi.
Plus it's probably destroying your grooves.

A god awful plastic box like the T-Amp (or one of its aluminum bigger brothers), a Mac and properly placed speakers for stereo reproduction would mean "high fidelity".
Or, if you dig vinyl, a cheapo hifi turntable like the entry level Pro-jects which allow you to properly set up the shell and arm.

Sounds like an exciting time is ahead, dude.
I wish you lots of luck (and envy you a little for being able to afford a MBP as a student)!

I don't think it will destroy my grooves for two reasons its not one of those much older mono boxed record players, its a stereo one and really very little has changed in its design. My Toshiba has a very light tone arm as apposed to the old portible fidelity units of the 1960s which yeah would ruin records due to the very heavy tone arms they where fitted with. I replaced the stylus and fully alined it best I could stylus is is still being manufactured for it :D. The sound quality is great and its a fully automatic turntable as well everything works baring the tape deck which I'm going to replace the belt in at some stage.

This model I have was Toshibas best offerings in 1978 the last owner provided me with the catalogue it came with and its the highest model out of all the others in it. The unit had a retail price of £800 thats almost 4 grand in todays money it features a digital clock, recording timer etc. So it was pretty state of the art at the time.

I've tried a modern USB turntable priced at £150 not mine was a friends I was shocked at the build quality and OMG the sound quality was abismal it sounded like it was underwater, listening to Bob Dylan and the Beatles sounds epic on the Toshiba though. I know not all turntables are like this, but I think a modern turn table ruins the nostalgia, plus I intend to totally style my room in a 1970s sort of fashion with the awesome space age look.

The audio system for my MacBook Pro is my granddads old 1976 Rotel RA-400 Amp connected to four modern day 2008 Sony Speakers working well as well .

I also think the terminology of Hi-Fi has changed over the years I've heard people in England calling those god awful £12.99 portable CD boom box units Hi-Fi's lol
Yeah I guess I am quite lucky thanks :D

First MR Post ever...

this is my mac/win setup... really new to all this stuff, just wanna see what people think. keep in mind, pretty low budget considering im 15.

lighting on the left side of the pic sucked for some reason... but its a dell 2110 netbook (school issued) with a dell flatscreen, keyboard and mouse for since the thing is so small. and then on the right side is a imac g4 17" i got for dirt cheap off ebay, and MBP 13 also off ebay. built the desk myself over the school year. let me know what you think.

Wow - a 15-year-old with a MacBook Pro is very impressive! That iMac is quite nice as well, but I prefer the design with the aluminum stand.

I turned 16 a month ago and I've sold my iMac G5 to buy an aluminum iMac. It kind of bothers me that I can't run up-to-date software.

Awesome setup. Only thing I will comment on is the flag hanging up on the wall. Technically it should be hung on the wall so that the blue star field is always in the top left hand corner. Again, awesome setup!

Here is my fairly new setup, nothing fancy..

Windows 7 was installed only for that I could play Limbo ;)

Apparently there is some cable management to be done, but I have a subwoofer under my table so what can you do?

A quick and easy way would be to run the cables down the leg of the desk and cable tie them in place.

Love the Audrey Hepburn frame on the wall, very nostalgic.

Ooooh, I love this, very tasteful.
I really like it.

I didn't realize people from the UK were such huge fans of the USA, nice flag ;)
Really? I thought a lot of students owned MBP's....

I don't get this.

When I was in college - and it's not a matter of "when I was your age", we're talking late 00s, technically I'm still enrolled, but am a full time worker now - had a part time job and, after spending money for books, transportation, food and very little clothing (say, a pair of jeans, a shirt and one or two haircuts a year) I managed to save very little, certainly not enough for a top of the line notebook; I got myself a used, battered piece of junk for roughly $100 which I resurrected with my mojo and, uhm, Slackware 10.

Seriously, what are these guys doing right?

BTW, this is my desk - it's not graced by a Mac yet, but you could use a little imagination and picture a nice Macbook in place of all that junk.

Now we'd be talking, heh?

c44f539

On the plus side, it is not the hairy mess some people call a desk :p
