Hey I'm in the market for a new desk and was interested in the Ikea Expedit. Could you by any chance tell me the width of the desk only, not including the self?

Thanks in advance

I'm in the same boat as I've been considering the Ikea Expedit desk as well. In particular, this one:

If you compare the bookshelf's dimensions along with the desk, the desk alone is about 30" or so in width.

My setup, IPad 2, 2010 IMac, I5, 2.8Ghz, 12Gb Ram, 2nd Monitor View-sonic on a monitor arm. Made the desk my self with some fold down legs and 3/4 inch cabinet grade plywood from Lowes, $50 bucks total cost. (Desk is L-Shaped):

Got a few upgrades for Father's Day for my Outside office..

It doesn't always take money to make something work for you. For Father's day my wife and kiddos kitted out the outside "office". I love it. :D
My road warrior G4 for all my computing needs and my trusty Acer Aconia A500 tab. I know! I know, I should bought an iPad. But I come from linux roots. And the price was hard to pass up. So far? It's been up to par for my needs.

It's an unfinished solid core fire door from Wickes, they had them on offer for £20 a pop but I think they're back up to £35 now, it's SO sturdy though, I was using an Ikea Vika Amon table top before this and it's lighter than even a hollow core door!

Definitely recommend this route, I think including the Door (£20) Legs (£16 for both, Ikea) and Varnish (Ronseal Perfect Finish Walnut, £8, Amazon) is a brilliant price for the sturdy, spacious and great looking desk I got from it, even if you do have to pay another £15-20 for the door initially you're still getting solid 200cm x 76cm space for around £60, you pay that for a flimsy 100x60 MDF job from most places already!

^Great desk!

Even better price! :D

That's a giant fan. Is it for cooling your giant... legs? :D

Haha no, I used to play in a few touring bands so that was a stage fan I had lying around, I use it infront of these rollers (below) nowadays for riding my bike indoors if the weather is rubbish!

Hey,

Well it came down to a view things, I'm a graphic designer by trade, currently living in lonely old London and I don't know a lot of people down this way, so I wanted to have a system that was powerful / portable enough to use on the road, that I could sync storage with the iMac from.

I basically have it set up so all the work I do on the iMac is copied over to the same folders (the MBP is basically an identical system, all same programmes and folder organisation) on the MBP, the MBP in turn then does the same process to the Mac Mini we use as a media centre in the living room (which has my back up drives connected to it) so it always ensures that there is a most recent back up on file just in case (my last MBP electrocuted me and wiped the HDD and an External USB HDD's Logic board in the process) Then last in that tedious process, is the Mini does the same process back to the iMac, so basically every 30 minutes a full cycle ensures that all systems have the same files on them and I effectively always have 3 live copies, and one backup of all my work.

So, to answer your question more directly, upgradability really! I couldn't get the RAM spec needed (as mentioned 16GB going in the 13") in the Air without paying more than I was comfortable with, and with the ability to use OptiBay's to drop HDD's for storage (500GB in each machine) and an SSD (120GB) for boot/system programs it made the MBP a far more appealing system.

Plus on a more personal level, I appreciate the beauty of the engineering that has gone into the Air, but I personally, don't think it's a very attractive computer, I'm really not a fan of the teardrop aesthetic!

I prefer the Matte screen on the Air yes, but 2 kilos is nothing, I usually always had a 15" MBP, Canon EOS 30D, 2 Lenses, Filters, Spare CF Cards etc, Flashgun, Ring Flash and other bits and bobs in my bag if I'm going anywhere, the 13" is still less weight than I was used to, but like I said 2 kilos is nothing, performance is more important to me than weight!

I'd like to think nobody actually *really* believes that they are buying an Air because they don't have the "strength" to carry a Pro :p

I will buy Air only because its a bit thinner - looks nice. And, ofc, SSD. Im very lazy for buying SSD and waiting when it & optibay comes, install it and reinstall os x... :)

By the way, can you give me a full-size picture? Looks indeed awesome, want to add to my personal workplaces collection :p

Need advice!

I need some advice guys! Right now my iMac sits in front of my rack mounted recording pieces, but if I put the iMac on the top level it is way to high and kills my neck. I was thinking about buying a shorter stand alone studio rack but I don't think it will be THAT much lower. Anybody else run into this issue with studio style desks, and if so what was your solution?

Thanks

Hey,

I can't really see it to see if it fits, but I think a really simple solution to your problem would be to remove that taller stand to let your screen and monitors sit a little further back, and *if* it fits, put your Midi keyboard and other bits onto the slide out tray, letting you have your mouse and apple keyboard on the same level as the iMac stand?

Can't really see how much you have going on behind the iMac to see how much room you have to play with!

Just FWIW, I bought a 13" MBA and returned it for a 13" MBP because of the display. While the extra resolution was nice, I simply could not get the color calibrated close enough to reliably edit photos on the Air.... and as a photographer that was a bit issue.

And not having a FW800 port was a downer for me too.

How does the bike stay upright?

You pedal! :D

It's a great trainer, trickier than a turbo trainer because you have to remain semi-focused to keep your balance and pedalling cadence steady so you don't end up in a wall, but once you're used to it there's nothing like it, you can get a resistance module for it to increase strength training, but even without it it's great for intervals!

If you mean technically, the foremost roller at the back is connected to the roller at the front with an elastic, so the front barrel always rolls at the same speed as you are driving the rear barrels. They have a slight inward taper to them to make the bike naturally swing towards the centre point but it did take a few days to get used to it and stop swaying off the sides!

Plus, it's fun! :)

Thanks for the response! I thought about doing that but the 2 pieces behind the iMac are mounted into the taller stand. One is a Tube PreAmplifier and the other is a Power Conditioner and they both breathe on the top & bottom so they have to be mounted. The only thing I can think to do is buy a stand alone rack/cart to the mount them in and just have them beside the desk. I was hoping to avoid spending money but I guess it's worth it to save me neck pain lol. And the desk goes pretty far back, probably a foot & a half behind where the iMac is now so it would be pretty sweet to have all that space!

What programs, scripts, etc do you use to accomplish the file transfers?
